Abstract

Obesity is a condition where the body is overweight due to fat accumulation, each exceeding 20-25% of body weight for men and women. L-carnitine is a nutrient that plays a role in transporting fat to the mitochondria to be burned and converted into energy for the body. Sufficient L-carnitine allows the body to burn fat at optimal levels. This research aims to determine the side effects of fed L-carnitine supplements against liver histology. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with four groups comprising six albino rats. The treatments were fed orally by distilled water 1 ml/day (Control), P1 fed by L-carnitine supplement dose 100 mg/kg body weight orally 1ml/day, P2 fed by L-carnitine supplement dose 150 mg/kg body weight orally 1ml/day, P3 fed by L-carnitine supplement dose 200 mg/kg body weight orally 1ml/day. Treatments were given to albino rats every day for 90 days. Variables observed measured were lipid degeneration, central vein dilation, and pyknotic nuclei. Data were analyzed with the statistical program (SPSS 22.0 for Windows) with One Way ANOVA. The results showed that feeding L-carnitine supplements in high doses for long periods can damage the liver cells of male rats. The microscopic liver damage statistical analysis showed significant differences (P<0.05) between the control and treatment groups.

Abstract

Background: Health students face various challenges during their studies. The demands of mastering clinical skills and the ability to build therapeutic relationships with patients require high concentration from health students. So it is important for health students to have good concentration during the learning process so that students' mastery of clinical skills can be achieved optimally. Acupuncture is a therapeutic modality that has been proven to have a function to improve individual cognitive abilities. This study aims to identify the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in improving the concentration of health students. Methods: The research sample in this study is 60 undergraduate nursing students of the Institute of Technology and Health Bali who are divided into an intervention group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The instrument that will be used in this study is the Grid Concentration test to assess the level of student concentration. Results: There was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the concentration score in the treatment group, where before acupuncture the concentration score was (median = 14) and after acupuncture, the concentration score became (median = 20.50). Conclusion: According to the results above, it proves that acupuncture therapy is effective in improving student concentration and can directly optimize working memory capacity.

Abstract

The Marygold flower (Tagetes erecta L.) exhibits numerous pharmacological properties. The marigold flower promotes hair development. Antioxidant substances that contribute to hair growth include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. This research was conducted to determine the efficacy of ethanol extracts from Marygold flowers (Tagetes Erecta L.) as hair growers in male rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). In a post-test-only control-group design, this study employed an experimental methodology. Thirty male rabbits served as test subjects in this study, which used one-way ANOVA. The KTL method was used in this study to determine the chemical constituent content of the ethanol extract of Marygold flowers at 5%, 10%, and 20% concentrations. Then, the length and density of the rabbit hair were measured to test the activity of hair growth. On days 7, 14, and 21, hair growth length was measured. On day 21, however, hair weight (density) was measured. Compounds from the flavonoid group (Rf 0.50 & 0.76), tannins (Rf 0.33 & 0.64), saponins (Rf 0.36 & 0.80), and alkaloids (Rf 0.33 & 0.62) were all positively present in the Marygold flower ethanol extract. The 20% concentration of Marygold flower ethanol extract exhibited the highest activity (p<0.05) in tests of hair density and length growth. The ethanol extract from Marygold flowers promotes hair growth in male rabbits, making their hair longer and denser.

Abstract

Phytochemistry-based practicums have the potential to strengthen students' cognitive understanding, psychomotor skills, and affective attitudes. This study examines the effectiveness of phytochemistry testing practicums using mint leaf (Mentha sp.) ethanol extract on the learning outcomes, psychomotor skills, and attitudes of biology students. The research subjects consisted of 30 second-year students selected using purposive sampling, as they had already completed the basic pharmaceutical biology course. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was applied, with instruments including a learning outcome test, observation sheets, and a response questionnaire. The phytochemical screening results confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids, which provided clear and easily observable visual indicators. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores (p = 0.001). Observations revealed good performance in laboratory skills such as procedural accuracy, work safety, and teamwork, although color interpretation required further improvement. Questionnaire responses indicated that students perceived the practicum positively, particularly in terms of motivation, relevance to everyday life, and integration of theory with practice. These findings indicate that mint leaf-based phytochemistry practicums effectively support student learning, with an average score of 80.4 in the cognitive domain (Good–Very Good), 82 in the psychomotor domain (Good), and 85 in the affective domain (Very Good). The use of local plants as a practical medium also provides a contextual, low-cost, and innovative approach to biology education, with strategic potential to improve the quality of laboratory-based learning.
