Abstract

Manado Town Square (Mantos) as a large-scale shopping center has a spatial complexity that has the potential to cause visitor disorientation, reduce navigation efficiency, and reduce the quality of the shopping experience. Wayfinding, as a spatial navigation system based on environmental elements, is crucial in improving the effectiveness of visitor orientation. This study is based on Gibson's wayfinding theory to understand how users receive and process spatial information based on the types of wayfinding systems. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the wayfinding system in Mantos based on visitor perceptions in order to identify navigation barriers and optimize the existing wayfinding system. Qualitative research methods are used with field observation techniques to identify existing wayfinding elements and questionnaire surveys to measure visitor perceptions of the effectiveness of the navigation system. This approach was chosen because it is able to describe in depth the user experience and factors that influence spatial orientation. This study also found that new visitors took an average of 8–12 minutes longer to find their destination than regular visitors. This shows the real impact of the lack of effective navigation system on the efficiency of movement within the mall. This study shows the importance of integrating environmental graphic design in the design of large-scale public spaces. This research strengthens the understanding that spatial orientation is the result of complex interactions between humans and their environment, not simply a directional system.

Abstract

The discussion of this research aims to understand the environmental behavior system based on behavioral attributes according to the theory proposed by Weisman (1981) that appears in its interaction with the environment so that it can become the basis for an assessment that the public open space can accommodate all functions or user activities. This research uses qualitative research methods with behavior mapping data collection methods consisting of place-centered mapping, person-centered mapping and physical trace behavior mapping methods to obtain information about emerging behavioral attributes. From the observation of 106 people, five dominant attributes emerged, namely, comfort, sociality, visibility, accessibility, and adaptability. However, there are shortcomings in meeting the needs of visitors based on these five attributes. The proposed design direction can maximize the function of Malalayang Beach Walk Manado City as a public open space that can accommodate a variety of user activities. Understanding the influence of user behavior on the environment can provide a perspective in developing a more comfortable and sustainable space.
