Abstract

This paper addresses the Universitas Terbuka (UT) students perception on quality assurance (QA) system of distance education, using an online survey method involving 306 students. The UT students perception on QA system is analyzed in terms of profile of respondents, perception on important values of QA, students satisfaction on the quality of the distance education programs and courses. The profile of the respondents shows that most of them are within the age of 25 to 30 years old. They study at UT mostly by means of reading printed materials and interactive online studies at home and at no particular place in the evenings. Students difficulties in distance related to conflicts with work responsibilities, lack of time and self motivation. Students said that they needed both academic and social psychological support. Students perception on important values in QA was expressed in terms of the availability and clear guidelines for QA system in the institution. In terms of institutional credibility, students stated that external accreditation and qualified staff are key factors to institutional quality. In terms of learning process, students valued highly the importance of well structured courses and interactivity in the learning process. Students also stated that media technology supports, faculty support, and fair assessment are important in the quality of teaching learning at a distance. In terms of learning experience, they perceived that protection of student rights, course content, and technology infrastructure were well facilitated by the institution. Makalah ini membahas persepsi mahasiswa Universitas Terbuka (UT) terhadap sistem penjaminan mutu (QA) pendidikan jarak jauh, dengan menggunakan metode survei online yang melibatkan 306 siswa. Persepsi mahasiswa dianalisis berdasarkan profil responden, persepsi pada nilai-nilai penting dari QA, kepuasan pada kualitas program pendidikan jarak jauh. Profil responden menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar dari mereka berusia 25 sampai 30 tahun. Mereka belajar di UT sebagian besar dengan cara membaca materi cetak dan interaksi online di rumah dan di tempat lainnya pada malam hari. Permasalahan yang dihadapi mahasiswa terkait pada konflik dengan tanggung jawab pekerjaan, kurangnya waktu dan motivasi diri. Mereka membutuhkan dukungan secara psikologi, akademik, dan sosial. Persepsi mahasiswa pada nilai-nilai penting dalam QA diekspresikan dalam hal ketersediaan pedoman yang jelas untuk sistem QA yang berlaku. Dalam hal kredibilitas kelembagaan, mahasiswa menyatakan bahwa akreditasi eksternal dan staf yang berkualitas merupakan faktor kunci untuk kualitas kelembagaan. Dalam hal proses pembelajaran, mahasiswa menilai sangat pentingnya program terstruktur dan interaktifitas dalam proses belajar. Mahasiswa juga menyatakan bahwa dukungan media teknologi, fakultas, dan penilaian yang adil adalah penting dalam kualitas belajar mengajar secara jarak jauh. Dalam hal pengalaman belajar, mereka memandang bahwa perlindungan hak-hak siswa, materi matakuliah, dan infrastruktur teknologi telah difasilitasi dengan baik oleh lembaga.

Abstract

This research discusses the effects of portfolio assessment on students’ improvement in English writing which are related to their writing proficiency levels, the problems encountered by them in each writing proficiency level, and the solution can be implemented regarding the problems found in the research. The research’s subject was Grade VIII which consisted of two classes. The method applied was qualitative method by using test, documentation, and observation  instruments to gather the data. All the scores of the tests are arranged in tables based on Wang and Liao’s criteria (2008) and are presented in bar chart. The results show that every level of writing proficiency has different percentage of improvement, and the low level students have the least improvement; they produced less sentences. The research also found that every level of writing proficiency had problems which were mainly in content, organization, conventions, and vocabulary, while the low level proficiency had another problem in gaining confidence to produce sentences. Beside that, the students did better in using present tense than past tense, and to improve their writing, it was proven that detailed correction and feedback were effective for the improvement.Thus, it is suggested that teacher should give different portion of attention related to correction and feedback, and the most portion should be given to the low level students of writing proficiency as they have the least improvement. Teacher should also give detailed correction and feedback as well to students to make better improvement. The research suggests that portfolio assessment program can be carried out integratedly in English lesson in every semester for all grades of Junior High School since it was proven good for students’ writing improvement.

Abstract

Research on Unit Cost Analysis of Students in Planning Graduate Program In Education Financing (PEF) at the Open University aims to determine the costs of students who take the program PPs-UT, in order to obtain this financing real terms by analyzing three aspects of the unit cost, which is fixed costs (fixed costs), variable cost (variable cost), and opportunity costs are the responsibility of the student. For the long term, the expected results of this study can serve as guidelines and financial planning education for prospective students who wish to continue their education in Distance Education Program in accordance with the Open University Pascasarana UPBJJ-UT character of each area. The research was conducted at UT PPS program, with sample PPs UT students in semester IV. Sampling for this study using proportional random sampling. The method used in this research is descriptive method with qualitative approach. The results showed that the fixed costs (fixed cost) has the same magnitude value for each item to be paid, except for the new student registration fee, examination fee hearing, as well as the cost Thesis Guidance Residential (BTR). For the variable costs, the amount depending on the location of the students are, especially related to tutotial face to face and dependents live. For the opportunity cost (opportunity cost), students feel not lose the opportunity to work during the lecture at UT PPs, because the online college system as well as face to face tutorials (TTM) which was held on Saturday and Sunday do not interfere with their work schedule. Meanwhile, to plan their future education, student education financing plan by setting aside income. Penelitian mengenai Analisis Unit Cost Mahasiswa Dalam Perencanaan Pembiayaan Pendidikan Pada Program Pascasarjana (PPs) di Universitas Terbuka ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui biaya yang harus dikeluarkan mahasiswa yang mengikuti program PPs-UT, agar didapatkan satuan riil pembiayaan ini dengan menganalisis 3 aspek unit cost, yakni fixed cost (biaya tetap), variable cost (biaya variabel), dan opportunity cost yang menjadi tanggung jawab mahasiswa. Untuk jangka panjangnya, diharapkan hasil penelitian ini dapat dijadikan sebagai pedoman dan perencanaan pembiayaan pendidikan bagi calon mahasiswa yang ingin melanjutkan pendidikan pada Pendidikan Jarak Jauh Program Pascasarana Universitas Terbuka sesuai dengan karakter UPBJJ-UT masing-masing wilayah. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada program PPs UT, dengan sampel mahasiswa PPs UT pada semester IV. Pengambilan sampel untuk penelitian ini menggunakan proporsional random sampling. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa biaya tetap (fixed cost) memiliki besaran nilai yang sama untuk setiap item yang harus dibayarkan, kecuali untuk biaya registrasi mahasiswa baru, biaya ujian sidang, serta biaya Bimbingan Tesis Residensial (BTR). Untuk biaya variabel, besarannya tergantung dari lokasi mahasiswa berasal, terutama terkait dengan tutotial tatap muka dan tanggungan hidup. Untuk biaya kesempatan (opportunity cost), mahasiswa merasa tidak kehilangan kesempatan untuk bekerja selama mengikuti perkuliahan di PPs UT, dikarenakan sistem kuliah online serta tutorial tatap muka (TTM) yang diadakan hari Sabtu dan Minggu tidak mengganggu jadwal pekerjaan mereka. Sementara itu, untuk merencanakan pendidikan mereka ke depan, mahasiswa merencanakan pembiayaan pendidikannya dengan menyisihkan penghasilan.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) module tailored to the needs of Islamic Education (PAI) programs in higher education institutions. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory method, involving three stages: (1) document observation, including the analysis of Syllabus (RPS) and existing teaching materials, (2) needs analysis through interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with faculty members and students, and (3) the design and development of ESP modules integrating Islamic content. The study was conducted at two Islamic universities in Indonesia, University A and University B, with participants comprising program heads, lecturers, and students from Islamic Education programs. The findings highlight several key points: University A lacks a structured ESP module, relying solely on RPS and inconsistent content across study programs. In contrast, University B demonstrates a more organized approach, with a dedicated ESP textbook titled English for Islamic Studies that incorporates Islamic themes, such as tafsir, fiqh, and aqidah. Additionally, University B effectively integrates digital tools and employs student feedback mechanisms to enhance engagement and flexibility in learning. Reading skills emerged as the most critical competency, supported by thematic Islamic content to improve linguistic and religious competencies. The study concludes that a well-structured ESP module aligned with institutional goals and students’ academic and spiritual aspirations can significantly enhance the teaching and learning process. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on ESP as a transformative tool for education in Islamic contexts.

Abstract

Mengevaluasi hasil belajar peserta didik harus dilakukan oleh para guru di sekolah dengan cara yang benar dan sesuai. Kemampuan dalam mengevaluasi ini perlu terus diperbaharui agar sesuai dengan kebutuhan. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, guru perlu melakukan evaluasi pada hasil belajar siswa untuk kemampuan berbahasa, diantaranya Listening, Reading, Writing, dan Speaking. Berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan awal, diketahui bahwa kemampuan guru bahasa Inggris di Kota Tangerang Selatan dalam melakukan evaluasi pembelajaran masih perlu ditingkatkan. Merujuk pada hal tersebut, tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Terbuka (UT) bekerja sama dengan Dinas Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Kota Tangerang Selatan melaksanakan pelatihan evaluasi pembelajaran yang ditujukan bagi para guru bahasa Inggris SMP di Kota Tangerang Selatan. PkM dilaksanakan secara luring di SMPN 11 Kota Tangerang Selatan dan secara daring melalui platform Zoom. Peserta PkM yang terdaftar sebanyak 20 orang dan peserta yang hadir sebanyak 9 guru. Narasumber pelatihan ini merupakan dosen program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang ahli dalam bidang evaluasi pembelajaran. Produk yang dihasilkan pada PkM ini adalah set soal dan jawaban yang kemudian dipresentasikan di hadapan ahli. Setelah dilakukan monitoring dan evaluasi, peserta merasakan bahwa pelatihan ini memberikan manfaat yang baik dalam meningkatkan kemampuan evaluasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah.

Abstract

Students' English proficiency is often measured by their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Among these, speaking is a primary focus of the English Education Department at Universitas Terbuka (UT). To assess whether students reach the desired level of proficiency, the department relies on standardized frameworks like the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). UT's curriculum on the Speaking course highlights the importance of CEFR, specifying that teaching should foster skills progression in English from elementary (A2) to intermediate (B2) levels. Despite this, there is a need to evaluate whether the implementation aligns with the curriculum's objectives, as the real-world application sometimes falls short of these standards. This research adopts a case study approach using mixed methods, combining qualitative and quantitative data in three regions. The result shows that the curriculum of speaking classes is based on the CEFR at the B2 level.

Abstract

This research presents the design of a multidimensional profiling framework to support adaptive and personalized English language learning at Universitas Terbuka (UT). A qualitative research method was used in designing the profiling framework. Data were collected through focus group discussions (FGDs) and institutional observations to examine the current realities within the university. Thematic analysis was then employed to interpret the data. Two key results were a learner profiling framework and an institutional readiness mapping. The framework included four phases: (1) Input: collecting data on learners’ digital readiness, learning styles, English proficiency, and self-regulated learning; (2) Processing: analyzing the data to create learner profiles; (3) Adaptation: using profiles to suggest personalized support; and (4) Interpretation: presenting results through dashboards and feedback tools. The institutional mapping found that each phase required a clear governance structure to ensure ethical use, transparency, and alignment with Universitas Terbuka’s policies and stakeholder capacities.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Sektor pariwisata pedesaan semakin berkembang sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan perekonomian masyarakat lokal. Desa Sawarna, yang terletak di Kabupaten Lebak, Banten, dikenal dengan keindahan alam pantainya dan aktivitas berselancar yang menarik wisatawan lokal maupun mancanegara. Namun, salah satu tantangan yang dihadapi adalah kurangnya kompetensi masyarakat setempat dalam berbahasa Inggris, padahal keterampilan ini penting untuk meningkatkan interaksi dengan wisatawan internasional. Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Terbuka merespons kebutuhan ini dengan menyelenggarakan pelatihan bahasa Inggris untuk tujuan pariwisata (English for Tourism) sebagai bagian dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Pelatihan ini dirancang untuk meningkatkan kemampuan masyarakat dalam berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan asing, sejalan dengan visi pemerintah dalam menjadikan Geopark Bayah Dome sebagai destinasi global. Melalui kolaborasi dengan komunitas dan dukungan program berkelanjutan, diharapkan Desa Sawarna dapat mencapai kemandirian dalam penggunaan bahasa Inggris sebagai sarana komunikasi, memperkaya pengetahuan, dan membuka peluang baru bagi masyarakat lokal. Kata Kunci: Pelatihan, Bahasa Inggris, Pariwisata  ABSTRACT The rural tourism sector is increasingly developing as a strategy to enhance the local community's economy. Sawarna Village, located in Lebak Regency, Banten, is known for its natural beach beauty and surfing activities that attract both domestic and international tourists. However, one of the challenges faced is the lack of English language proficiency among the local community, despite this skill being crucial for improving interactions with international tourists. The English Education Study Program of FKIP Universitas Terbuka responds to this need by organizing English for Tourism training as part of its community service activities. This training is designed to enhance the community's ability to communicate with foreign tourists, aligning with the government's vision of making the Bayah Dome Geopark a global destination. Through collaboration with the community and support for sustainable programs, it is hoped that Sawarna Village can achieve independence in using English as a means of communication, enrich knowledge, and open new opportunities for the local community.Keywords: Training, English, Tourism
