Abstract

This article aims to describe how an English teacher taught writing procedure text using YouTube videos to the 11th-grade students of Vocational High School. The study applied a descriptive qualitative approach. This research was conducted at one Vocational school in Pacet. The participants of this research were an English teacher and 36 students from grade 11 of Tourism Travel Business (ULP) major. This study was guided by one research question “How does the teacher teach writing procedure text using YouTube video to grade 11 students of Vocational High School?” The instruments used in this study were observation, documentation, and interview. The findings of this study show that: 1) the English teacher engaged the students to watch a video from YouTube together in the opening activity, 2) the English teacher and the students discussed the contents of the YouTube videos that have been watched in the core activity, and 3) the English teacher played YouTube videos to prepare the students’ mental condition before they were doing presentation about their writing project of procedure text in core activity. The results indicated that the YouTube video on teaching writing aligns with the stages of the teaching activities proposed by Rusmawan.

Abstract

The development of media in a conception of learning technology must have the following characteristics: (a) target oriented; (b) applying the concept of a systems approach; and (c) make use of varied learning resources. Thus the application of media and educational technology, can realize a concept of "teaching less learning more". As technology-based media variations develop, teaching materials become more interesting. Not only text and images, but there is audio, video and animation that make a concept easier to understand. Presentation of information in several ways and forms is often called multimedia. This research method is a survey research that aims to obtain information on students' perceptions of the use of PowToon multimedia-based teaching materials. The questionnaire was used as an instrument to obtain this information. The results of the questionnaire were then analyzed using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) model approach; namely: perceived usefulness (perceived usefulness), perceived ease of use, attitude toward using technology, and behavioral intention to use

Abstract

Speaking ability is essential in 21st-century education, yet many students still struggle with limited vocabulary, unclear pronunciation, and low comprehension. This study examined the impact of two digital storytelling applications, Read to Me and Fairytales, on enhancing students’ speaking ability. A quantitative approach with a quasi experimental method are used in this research. The research was conducted at a private senior high school in Bogor using non-equivalent control groups design. Two tenth-grade classes were selected, both of classes chosen randomly by lottery system, with one group using Read to Me and the rest of the class using Fairytales. The research focused on speaking ability with the component vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. The results were analyzed using an independent samples t-test, which showed a significant difference between the groups’ post-test scores (t = 2.32, df = 63, p < 0.05). The experimental group which is treated by Read to Me showed greater increased, likely due to features such as audio narration, highlighted text, and adjustable speed, which offered better language input. In conclusion, digital storytelling with interactive elements can effectively influences students’ speaking ability in phase E.

Abstract

Technology has been in active use for a long time particularly in higher educational institutions. Mainly, technology provides various opportunities to enhance students’ performance to language learning. This present paper discusses the implementation and integration a technologyengagement teaching strategy with the aid of PowToon by focusing on students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. This study presents the teaching practices that occur through such an activity by applying Powtoon as a multimodal learning tool to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. In addition, in the second section of this paper, this paper presents the students’ attitude toward the teaching of reading through Powtoon. This paper concludes with comments about both the extent of Powtoon as a multimodal learning tool and about the future of teaching reading comprehension through technology in a multimodal world. Keywords: technology, language learning, PowToon. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v10.i3.202015

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) Menganalisis struktur biaya dan penerimaan usahatani kelapa dengan pola monokultur dan pola tumpangsari kelapa dengan pinang di Kecamatan Mendahara Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timur, (2) Melihat besarnya perbedaan pendapatan usahatani kelapa dalam petani yang menggunakan pola monokultur dan petani yang menggunakan pola tumpangsari. Pemilihan lokasi penelitian dengan pertimbangan lokasi penelitian merupakan daerah dengan luas tanam dan produksi terbesar di Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timur. Penelitian dilakukan dari tanggal 9 Januari 2014 sampai tanggal 9 Februari 2014 dengan metode simple random sampling. Daerah sampel penelitian yaitu Kelurahan Mendahara Ilir dan Desa Sungai Tawar dengan pertimbangan desa ini memiliki jumlah petani paling banyak dengan mengusahakan usahatani monokultur dan tumpangsari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan pendapatan yang signifikan antara petani yang menggunakan pola monokultur dan pola tumpangsari, baik dalam hal penerimaan, biaya dan pendapatan usahatani. Penerimaan pada usahatani tumpangsari lebih besar dari penerimaan pada usahatani monokultur, begitu juga dalam hal biaya usahatani. Biaya usahatani pada tumpangsari lebih besar dari biaya usahatani pada monokultur. Meskipun biaya yang dikeluarkan pada usahatani pola tumpangsari lebih besar dari biaya usahatani yang dikeluarkan pada usahatani monokultur namun dengan adanya tambahan penerimaan dari usahatani pinang akan menyebabkan pendapatan pada usahatani tumpangsari juga lebih besar dari pendapatan usahatani monokultur.
