Abstract

Boosters, defined as linguistic devices (e.g. certainly) used by writers to indicate full commitment to the truth value of a proposition, has received little attention from applied linguists, despite their persuasive power in research writing. The present study investigated the effects of the two variables of sociocultural context and discipline on the frequency of use of boosters in research articles. A specialized corpus of 104 research articles published between 2007 and 2010 taken from applied linguistics and chemistry written in English and Indonesian by the respective native speaker scholars were quantitatively analyzed using 2 x 2 Factorial ANOVA. The results showed that there was a significant main effect of sociocultural context, F (1, 100) = 44,34, p <0,05, ŋ2 = 0,307, a significant main effect of discipline, F (1,100) = 19,16, p < 0,05, ŋ2 = 0,161, and a significant interaction between sociocultural context and discipline, F (1,100) = 6,90, p < 0,05, ŋ2 = 0,065. However, the within-sociocultural context simple effects analysis revealed that English applied linguistics and chemistry research articles were not significantly different from each other, F (1,101) = 1,07, n.s. suggesting that, discipline might not be a decisive factor that influences boosting usage in research articles. These results indicate that the two variables (sociocultural context and discipline) exerted unequal influence upon boosting practices in research articles. The differential characteristics of the two sociocultural contexts are offered as explanations to account for the differential boosting practices of English and Indonesian research articles.

Abstract

This study examines whether sociocultural context and discipline substantially affect usage of hedges in research articles. The corpus for the study consists of 104 research articles from two languages (English and Indonesian) with the disciplines of applied linguistics and chemistry. The analysis reveals that there is a statistically significant effect of sociocultural context in research articles from applied linguistics only. Interaction effect between sociocultural context and discipline is also observed. However, there is no statistically significant effect of the disciplines. It seems that both factors are not the major factors influencing usage of hedges in research articles. One intrapersonal factor, namely the cultural models embraced by the individual authors in regard to hedging usage, is proposed as a significant factor which determines the degree of uncertainty of research articles.

Abstract

Despite its increasing popularity among young adults, TikTok has been very slow in finding its way into the English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching profession. Yet before introducing the application into the EFL classrooms, it is no doubt imperative to discern what is preferable among EFL learners. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the extent to which EFL learners perceive TikTok as facilitating their learning. To this end, the participants (N = 31) were asked to fill out a short, online questionnaire to gather information about (i) whether they utilized TikTok as an affordance for their EFL learning and (ii) whether they perceive its integration into the EFL classrooms as facilitative of their learning. The findings revealed that although they did not explicitly mention that they used TikTok as an affordance for their EFL learning, they held a belief that TikTok is effective in promoting their English proficiency. According to the students, there were three factors of note which contribute to the effectiveness of TikTok, namely abundant authentic input availability, easy-to-grasp information and availability of free tuition related to English language learning. Pedagogically, it implies that TikTok is worth integrating into the EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the level of public satisfaction with services at the TPI Ngurah Rai Special Class I Immigration Office, which was motivated by the high number of complaints and requests for information as well as the lowest rating from Google reviews among other immigration offices in Bali. The results of previous research show varying results regarding the influence of tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy aspects on community satisfaction. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of service quality using ServQual (tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy) on community satisfaction at the TPI Ngurah Rai Special Class I Immigration Office partially and simultaneously. This research uses descriptive quantitative methods. The total sample was 100 respondents with sampling using the accidental sampling method. The data analysis technique uses multiple linear regression analysis with hypothesis testing using the t test and F test. The results simultaneously show that the variables tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy have a significant effect on community satisfaction. Partial results show that the tangible and assurance variables do not have a significant effect on community satisfaction, the empathy variable has a negative but not significant effect on community satisfaction, and the reliability and responsiveness variables have a significant influence on community satisfaction. The determination test showed that 62.9% of the variation in community satisfaction variables could be influenced by tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy variables.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to explore the social and cultural dimensions of Balinese personal names, specifically examining how the order of birth is reflected in the nomenclature. By delving into the historical and cultural context, the study aims to elucidate the societal roles and expectations associated with these names, providing a holistic understanding of their significance within the Balinese community. To achieve a comprehensive analysis, the study employs a combination of document study and the examination of students' attendance lists. Document study involves reviewing historical records, folklore, and other relevant texts to trace the evolution of Balinese naming conventions. Additionally, attending to students' attendance lists offers contemporary insights into the prevalence and adherence to traditional naming practices. The collected data will be subjected to qualitative analysis, utilizing both historical and contemporary perspectives. Thematic analysis will be applied to identify recurring patterns, cultural nuances, and changes over time. Comparative analysis of attendance lists will offer insights into the extent to which traditional naming practices persist in modern Balinese society. By synthesizing the findings from document study and attendance lists, this research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of Balinese naming conventions and their sociolinguistic implications. The study contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage by documenting these unique practices and highlights the importance of recognizing and respecting linguistic diversity in the face of evolving global trends.

Abstract

Despite the significance of motivation and pragmatic competence for L2 learners, surprisingly, research into L2 pragmatics learning motivation is almost non-existent. Drawing on the self-determination theory of human motivation, the present study was carried out to investigate the level and nature of Indonesian EFL learners’ motivation for L2 pragmatics learning. A total of 76 Indonesian-speaking sophomores studying international business management were asked to fill out a tailor-made, 29-item online questionnaire designed to measure the level and nature of their motivation for L2 pragmatics learning. It was found that (i) Indonesian EFL students’ motivation for L2 pragmatics learning was insufficiently high, (ii) their intrinsic motivation was the highest compared to other types of motivation, and (iii) their external motivation was surprisingly low. These findings can be explained in the light of the students’ previously instructed foreign language learning experiences which placed undue emphasis on the formal aspects of the target language while marginalizing the social ones. Pedagogically, the findings imply that, owing to the malleability of human motivation, EFL teachers should employ principled instructional methods to promote their students’ L2 pragmatics learning motivation. Be that as it may, further studies need to be conducted to (in) validate the above-mentioned findings, taking into consideration the limitations of the present study.

Abstract

This study examines how comic reading enhances mental health and English language skills by exploring its role in stress reduction, emotional well-being, and language acquisition. It focuses on the dual benefits comics offer as therapeutic tools for emotional processing and as effective resources for improving vocabulary, comprehension, and cultural understanding in English learners. Method. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining survey responses from 100 participants and semi-structured interviews with 15 individuals. Quantitative data were analysed to identify trends in mental health and language improvements, while qualitative data provided deeper insights into personal experiences with comic reading. Results and Discussion. The findings revealed that 75% of participants experienced stress relief from comic reading, with 50% noting improved mood. Emotional connections to characters fostered empathy and self-reflection, aiding in resilience. In language learning, 70% of English learners reported better vocabulary retention and comprehension, highlighting the role of visual cues and narrative context in supporting language acquisition. Challenges such as time constraints and limited research on specific genres were identified, but comics consistently proved to be engaging tools for personal and linguistic growth. Conclusion. Comics are valuable resources for enhancing emotional well-being and language proficiency. Their integration into mental health programs and educational curricula can foster resilience and cultural understanding while providing an enjoyable learning experience. This study underscores the potential of comics as a versatile medium that bridges the gap between entertainment, education, and emotional health.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited research on factors influencing turnover intention in conservation-based tourism, despite its significant impact on organizational sustainability and workforce stability. The study aims to examine the influence of workload and job satisfaction on turnover intention among employees at Taman Safari Bali. A quantitative research design was employed using purposive sampling with 85 respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The results indicate that workload has a negative effect on turnover intention (β = -0.394) and a positive effect on job satisfaction (β = 0.302), while job satisfaction negatively affects turnover intention (β = -1.942); however, none of these relationships were statistically significant (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that variations in workload and job satisfaction do not significantly influence employees’ intention to leave the organization. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature by highlighting the limited predictive power of internal variables on turnover intention within the context of conservation tourism. Practically, it offers empirical data from Bali’s tourism sector, which has been predominantly represented by hospitality-focused studies. Future research is recommended to adopt a longitudinal approach, expand regional coverage, and consider external variables such as leadership style, organizational climate, and work-life balance to achieve a more comprehensive understanding.
