Abstract

Abstrak. Translating is a hard work. It isnot only about finding the word of the source language (SL) having the samemeaning in the target language (TL). It talks about the message. Theword/phrase/sentence going to be translated is a text or it is called surfacestructure. A text needs context or known as deep structure which containsmessage. Therefore a word may have the same meaning either in SL or TL, butthey have different sense as they bring different message in different context. In this article, it is explored the mistranslation o the word “must”. Thisstudy observed 14 students who were learning English. They were asked totranslate a text entitled “The Mirror”. The analysis is focused on a paragraphconsisting of a word “must”. The result shows that the students are stillfocusing on the text or surface structure. They ignore the context or deepstructure. Thus, the message fails to be delivered.  Katakunci: translation, meaning, message,Source Language, Target Language.

Abstract

Lesbians are primarily residents of the Greek island of Lesbos. The term gained currency after Sappho, a poet from Lesbos around 600 BC, depicted the state of a female's blistering emotional and erotic lodestone toward another female [1]. While there has been an increase in tolerance and a decrease in discrimination in recent years, and some studies have been conducted on lesbianism and lesbian-related linguistic features, lesbianism and lesbian-related linguistic features have received significantly less attention than gay men's homosexuality [2]. Taking up this issue, this research is determined to elucidate the specific language variation used by the Bondowoso district's lesbian community. As the concept of lesbian-specific words is reformed and deconstructed, this investigation seeks to unearth the meaning of the language variety referred to as slang. Additionally, to complete this research, some sociological factors influencing the use of slang [3] are examined. The interview is conducted to elicit information about the sociological factors that contribute to speakers' use of slang in their community. The result indicates that the majority of slang words are derived from English and refer to gender roles, physical characteristics/appearance, types of relationships, and sexual activities. Bondowoso's lesbian community adapts slang terms used by lesbians worldwide phonologically. Sociological factors and reasons indicate that this queer society views self-identification as a lesbian as the most significant identity because it has ramifications for other attributions.

Abstract

This study investigates the practical use of English interpolated into Somethinc’s Instagram captions through code-mixing analysis. To do so, this research employs Muysken’s proposition to identify the English codes and their types. Further, this research also addresses followers to reveal their intention on the decision to buy or reject the products. Documenting the captions is purposefully done for collecting the data to present the English codes, and distributing questionnaire is intentionally conducted to seek the followers’ purchase intention. The result shows that among 20 captions taken from February 14th until April 26th 2024, there are 57 English codes found in three types of code-mixing comprising insertion with 35 data, alternation with 20 data, and congruent lexicalization with 2 data. Further, the fact shows that English use in Somethinc’s captions is very influential because 56,9% of the respondents decide to buy the products. This finding gives a new insight that the use of English words in promoting products will attract followers’ attention and intention to buy the products.

Abstract

This article is the results of the study conducted in three detention centers in Jember, Bondowoso, and Situbondo. The focus of the study is how preachers use some techniques of rhetoric to persuade the assisted residents to fear Allah. This is of importance looking at the fact that assisted residents need religious messages while they are in the detention centers. The data of the study was collected by recording the religious talks delivered by the preachers and conducting the observation. The spoken data was transcribed into written, spoken texts. The preachers’ utterances were sorted out to find the utterances containing persuasive elements. Then they were analyzed as the basis of identifying the techniques which were used by the preachers to persuade the assisted residents. The results of the study reported that there was persuasive rhetoric in religious talks at those three detention centers. That persuasive rhetoric was applied using different techniques: direct and indirect persuasion, figurative language, references, story, and the use of cause and effect techniques.
