Abstract

The system of pig farm in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province is a traditional farm so that pigs are susceptible to diseases caused by endoparasite. Parasite species commonly invested in pigs is Ascaris suum. Treatment used and believed to have an effect as anti-endoparasite for infected pigs is leaves of Gewang (Corypha utan Lamk). The aims of this study were to assess the potency of ethanol leaves extract of gewang against worm Ascaris suum in vitro and to know the potential compound in the leaves by phytochemical test. Samples of 60 Ascaris suum were collected from small intestines of pigs. Extract was obtained by evaporation and maceration methods, and then divided into several concentrations, which were 5%, 10% and 15%. Control group used physiological saline 0.9%. The results showed that the 15% extract had the fastest time (21.33 hours) to kill the parasite, while the 10% and 5% extract needed 28.33 and 42.33 hours respectively. Based on phytochemical test, the extract contained saponins and tannins. The conclusion of this study is that the extract of ethanol leaves of Gewang has good potential as anthelmintic for Ascaris suum.

Abstract

Aedes sp. is a type of mosquito that can carry dengue virus which causes dengue fever (DHF). DHF is an increasingly widespread public health problem with the increase in the mobility and population density. One effort that needs to be done in the control of DHF is to cut off the life cycle of mosquito Aedes sp. Therefore, it is necessary to have an understanding of the life cycle of mosquito Aedes sp. This study aims to determine the characteristics of morphology and life cycle of mosquito Aedes sp. in Kupang City. Study location in Kelurahan Oebobo and Kelurahan Kelapa Lima. The selection of this site is based on the highest incidence of DHF according to data from Kupang City Health Office in 2016. The study method includes Aedes sp. mosquito larvae collection, observation of the life cycle and identification of the development of mosquito Aedes sp. include measurement of temperature, humidity and pH of water. Sample of Aedes sp. mosquito larvae collected, then taken to the parasitology laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Nusa Cendana University. Observation of morphological characteristics of mosquito Aedes sp. done in macroscopically and microscopically. Next will observed the life cycle of mosquito Aedes sp. which is carried out at every stage of eggs, larvae, pupa, to adult using a stereo microsocpe and then matched with the identification key. The analytical data used is descriptive analysis shown in the form of table and drawing The results show that the life cycle of mosquito Aedes sp. in Kota Kupang ranging from 7-10 days with details of 1-2 egg stages, 3 days of larvae stage, L4 larvae to pupa 1-2 days and the pupa stage mature for 2-3 days, with an average temperature of 28,3ºC, humidity 60.4% and pH of water 7

Abstract

East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is one of the provincial livestock producer and breeder sector has also become one of the sectors that support the communities in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. In support of the program of cattle to be free of the disease, efforts to improve the beef cattle population is affected by several factors such as enclosure management and disease prevention. Diseases that can reduce productivity in cattle caused by bacteria, viruses, endoparasites and ectoparasites. One of the ectoparasites that act as vectors of disease that often occurs in cattle are flies. This study aims to look at the Variety type and abundance Flies On Cattle in Kupang located in two studies namely Cattle Farmers Group Noetnana, Village Fatukoa, District Maulafa, Kupang (farm I) and Cage Cattle SMK PP Kupang State (farm II). Fly collection is done by using two methods: the method of sweeping and manual methods.Flies sample processing is done by piercing flies (pinning) using pinning needles on one side of the thorax slightly to the right of the center line. The diversity of types of flies analyzed using the formula of relative abundance. The diversity of types of flies obtained during the research was Haematobia sp. Hippobosca sp. Stomoxys calcitrans, Musca domestica, and Tabanus sp. Factors that contributed to support the amount of diversity of types of flies are carrying appropriate for the survival of various types of flies in these locations such as temperature, humidity, food and breeding grounds. The total number of flies were obtained during the study was 3308 flies.

Abstract

Infectious diseases in livestock are a major issue in the global livestock industry. Kupang Regency is one of the livestock warehousing regions in NTT, and it also has issues every year owing to infectious diseases that target many species of livestock in the district, particularly cattle and pigs, which are the backbone of Kupang Regency. Recognizing the importance of livestock for the socioeconomic life of the local community and the magnitude of the effects that infectious diseases can have on livestock, one of the important strategic steps that must be taken is to empower livestock farmer groups in the effort to prevent infectious diseases in livestock, particularly in the safe and appropriate use of disinfectants. This community service was carried out at Camplong II Village, Kupang Regency, and three groups of livestock farmers from the village area participated. Counseling, interactive dialogues with livestock farmer groups, and demonstration on the use of appropriate and correct disinfectants were among the activities carried out. This activity revealed that many members of livestock farmer groups are still uninformed of the role and usage of disinfectants in the prevention of infectious diseases in their livestock. At the end of the program, the community learnt to distinguish different types of disinfectants and their applications in the farming managment.
