Abstract

The prevalence of antibiotic resistance is an increasing problem due to the use of false and excessive antibiotics. The use of antibiotics in pig farms is increasing and needs to be aware of side effects, it is also influenced by the knowledge, attitudes and practices of farmers. This study is a cross-sectional study using a structured questionnaire interview to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitudes towards the practice of using antibiotics by pig farmers in Kupang city. A total of 96 respondents pig farmers spread over 6 districts, District of Maulafa (9 villages) District of Alak (12 villages) District of Oebobo (7 villages), District of Kelapa Lima (5 villages), District of Kota Raja (2 villages) and the district of Kota Lama (1 village). The variables observed were individual characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices of the use of antibiotics by pig farmers in relation to the occurrence of antibiotic resistance. The relationship between the variables was tested using the Pearson correlation, while the relationship and magnitude of the direct and indirect impact on the observed variables was determined using path analysis. The results showed knowledge has a very significant impact (p <0.01) and indirectly contributes to the level of antibiotic usage practices preventing the occurrence of antibiotic resistance. Attitudes have a significant effect (p <0.05) and directly affect the practice of antibiotics to prevent the use of antibiotic resistance in Kupang. Conclusion of this study shows that knowledge has a major impact on the practice of using antibiotics by pig farmers, so by increasing farmers' knowledge of the facts incidence of antibiotic resistance, the attitude of farmers will increasingly have a positive significant effect on the level of practice use of antibiotics Prevent antibiotic resistance at a pig farm in the city of Kupang.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of the spread of antibiotic-resistant E. coli on pig farms in Kupang City by using mapping analysis. Data on E. coli resistance comes from the results of laboratory analysis and as secondary data for spatial analysis. Spatial analysis uses the nearest neighbour index, convex hull and elementary analysis of disease methods. The results of this study have shown a high prevalence of E. coli (85.4%) with clustered distribution patterns and have a wide spread (10920 ha) in the area in Kupang City. MDR E. coli had a moderate prevalence (57.31%) by forming a group spread pattern and a wide spread (7778 Ha) on pig farms in Kupang City. This result encourages prevention and control efforts by all interested parties so that the rate of spread of resistant E. coli can be reduced.

Abstract

The long term purposes of the study are to change the mind and the custom of pigs farmers from using restaurant or household wastes to using local feeds enriched with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The short term or special purpose of the study are to find out the cheaper alternative feeds for pigs and information of using yeast to improve feeds quality and pigs productivity. The study with those purposes was carried out off farm by supplementing yeast into low quality pig feeds (crude protein/CP ≤ 16%) of local weaned pigs composed of: corn meal, rice brand, soybean/tofu extract and unused fish meal. 12 local weaned pigs were fed 4 treatment diets based on block design of 4 treatments with 3 blocks design procedure. The 4 treatment feeds were formulated as : R0 (commercial diet/551); R1 (basal feed + 2% yeast of daily requirement); R2 (basal feed + 4% yeast of daily requirement); and R3 (basal feed + 6% yeast of daily requirement). Feed intake, daily weight gain, feeds conversion efficiency, protein, and crude fibre digestibility were studied in the study. Statistical analysis showed that the effect of the treatments is not significant (P>0.05) on all variables studied. Supplementation yeast of 6% is the best treatment performing the highest result of most variable studied. The conclusion drawn is that supplementing yeast up to 6% could improve performance of weaned pigs fed low quality feed and perform the similar result with feeding commercial feed (551). It is suggested to use yeast up to 6% in the diet and further research including widen range and high level of yeast supplementation could be done.

Abstract

African swine fever (ASF) is an infectious and hemorrhagic disease that attacks pigs caused by a double-stranded DNA virus, in family Asfarviridae and genus Asfivirus. Known that vaccines and treatments for pigs infected by the virus have not been found can increase the risk of transmission in pig farms, so that biosecurity is a very important measure in reducing or minimizing the spread and prevention of the disease. The purpose of this study is to identify the types and evaluation of biosecurity application techniques on pig farms after ASF outbreak in Kupang Regency. Method of this study is used cross sectional method and descriptive analysis by conducting observational interview and data collections by filling the questionnaires. Data of this study are presented in the form of a weight processing table and a comparison table of types of biosecurity. There are three types of biosecurity, conceptual, structural and operational biosecurity. Value of the application of biosecurity of the three types of biosecurity in six farms got a good category, namely conceptual biosecurity has value of 128, structural biosecurity has value of 261, and operational biosecurity has value of 204. Evaluation the values of the three types of biosecurity in 6 pig farms has good category. This category is evidenced by the application of the three types of biosecurity by the six pig farms. Researchers suggest to increasing the application of biosecurity, especially manage the distances from residential areas by means of higher walls, making septic tanks for waste collection so that they are not environmentally friendly, providing sanitation and disinfection facilities, namely places and soap for washing hands and feet, toilet facilities, and procurement of PPE for workers.

Abstract

The outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) disease as a disease that can affect the swine has distributed in many countries including Indonesia. The Province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) is the biggest swine population in Indonesia being risk because Timor Island directly bordered Timor Leste, which an area that affected ASF. The outbreak of ASF caused a big loss to the economy and the public's fear of consumption of pork and other swine products. The purpose of this activity is to given information about characteristics of good pork quality and appeal public to control and prevent dissemination of ASF. According to this activity, the public knowing ASF as a danger and zoonotic disease, which caused public anxiety to consumption pork and other swine products. Although the public knowing about the danger of ASF, there is no preventive action they know. This activity is a tool for breeders to prevent ASF in their animal husbandry and for the public to know that ASF, not a zoonotic disease. However, consumption of pork and other swine products infected with ASF can spread ASF continuously.

Abstract

Eggs are perfect foodstuffs because they contain nutrients such as protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals in sufficient quantities. Under certain conditions, the complete nutritional content in eggs can be a good growth medium for microorganisms. It is important to educate the community about how to differentiate egg quality and how to store eggs properly so that people can choose and get eggs of good quality in the long term. The benefit is that they can be more careful in choosing the eggs to buy, and know-how to store eggs properly so that the egg's shelf life can last longer. This education was carried out online during the Covid-19 pandemic Work From Home (WFH) period using the Zoom meet application. The participants in this counseling consisted of housewives and students.
