Abstract

Chemistry teachers in vocational high schools face challenges due to practicum equipment and chemical limitations. The objective of this community service is to increase the creativity of vocational high school teachers in addressing this issue. Participants have enrolled in a practicum on microscale qualitative analysis. Preparation, implementation, and evaluation were the three stages of the activity. Making a practicum module, getting chemicals and equipment ready for experiments, filming practical videos, and creating questionnaires were all part of the preparation process. The implementation step was delivered as a four-topic microscale qualitative analysis practicum. The evaluation step was completed by evaluating the presentation tasks and descriptively analyzing the participants' questionnaire responses. The community service was performed between June 27th and August 20th, 2022. The results showed that participants could demonstrate microscale qualitative analysis. The community service was performed well. Following the community service, participants can create micro-scale practicum material based on their schools' conditions, overcoming equipment and materials limitations.

Abstract

Eco-enzyme is a filtrate produced by fermenting sugar and a mixture of organic matter for 3 months. Eco-enzymes have been widely used as cleaning fluids and disinfectants. This study aims to investigate the levels of hydrogen peroxide and the antibacterial activity of eco-enzymes stored at different times. Hydrogen peroxide level was analyzed by redox titration and the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was analyzed by paper disc method. This study shows that there were significant differences in the levels of hydrogen peroxide and the antibacterial activity of the eco-enzymes stored for a certain time. Hydrogen peroxide levels increased from 0 months of storage to reach the highest point at 10 months of storage with 2664.9 ppm and then it began to decrease to the lowest point at 114 months of storage. The highest antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was shown by eco-enzyme stored for 0 months, with inhibitory zones of 6.37 mm and 6.59 mm, respectively. Eco-enzyme no longer showed antibacterial activity after 15 months of storage. Overall, the storage duration of the eco-enzyme affects the hydrogen peroxide level and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to the amount of lactic acid bacteria in the eco-enzyme. Keywords: antibacterial activity, eco enzyme, hydrogen peroxide, storage duration

Abstract

Curcumin, a bioactive compound derived from Curcuma longa, offers significant pharmacological benefits such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. However, its therapeutic application is restricted due to poor water solubility, low systemic bioavailability, and limited skin penetration. This study explores the use of Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLCs) as a drug delivery system to improve curcumin's stability and permeability. Two formulations were developed: NLC-KUR-T80, which encapsulates curcumin using the non-ionic surfactant Tween 80, and NLC-KUR-CTAB, which uses the cationic surfactant CTAB. Both formulations were prepared using the Phase Inversion Temperature (PIT) method and characterized for particle size, polydispersity index (PI), zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency (EE%), and fluorescence properties. Results revealed that CUR-NLC-CTAB exhibited a larger particle size (1410 ± 183 nm), higher zeta potential (78.70 ± 0.67 mV), and significantly better encapsulation efficiency (27.33 ± 3.33%) compared to CUR-NLC-T80. Fluorescence studies demonstrated that curcumin within NLC-CTAB had enhanced fluorescence intensity, indicating better stability and distribution within the lipid matrix.
