Abstract

The existence of inconsistencies in the results of primary research on the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model on students' ability to understand concepts and mathematical reasoning encouraged researchers to conduct research that aims to examine the differences in the effect of the discovery learning model on students' ability to understand concepts and mathematical reasoning as a whole as well as in terms of educational level, sample size, and research demographics. This test was conducted using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with a meta-analysis method to obtain more comprehensive conclusions. Through testing on 41 primary studies, it was found that the implementation of the Discovery Learning model had a significant effect on the mathematical concepts understanding abilities as a whole. The study characteristics of the educational levels and research demographics lead to differences in the effect of the students' mathematical concept understanding abilities, with the highest effect at the junior high school education level and the demography of the research islands of Bali and Nusa Tenggara. However, the study characteristics of the sample size did not show any differences in the effect. In addition, it was also found that the implementation of the Discovery Learning model had a significant effect on the mathematical reasoning abilities as a whole after testing 45 primary studies. The study characteristics of the sample size led to differences in the effect of the students' mathematical reasoning abilities, with the highest effect on a sample size of less than 30 students. However, the study characteristics of educational levels and research demographics did not show any differences in the effect. Thus, the results of this study imply that educators can implement the Discovery Learning model as an effort to improve students' mathematical conceptual understanding and reasoning abilities.

Abstract

Mathematics learning activities in schools tend to emphasize students to be able to solve problems with existing formulas. Likewise, teachers who pay less attention to and practice various problem-solving strategies. Thus, students are less able to express their thinking processes. This study aims to determine the students' mathematical thinking processes in solving mathematical problem-solving problems given. This type of research is descriptive qualitative with research subjects consisting of 6 students of class X Social Sciences SMA Islam Plus Adzkia Medan selected by purposive sampling method. The data collection technique was carried out using research instruments in the form of a description test which amounted to 3 questions and interviews. The results showed that the thinking processes used by students in solving problems were different. There are several problem-solving strategies used by students as a form of their thinking process. In the first question, there are three strategies used by students, namely act it out (conducting experiments), logical thinking, and different points of view. In the second question, all students used the strategy of registering all the possible answers that were explained directly or using the strategy of making tables. For the third question, there are two thinking strategies, namely by using formulas and strategies to find patterns. However, it was also found that there were still students who had inappropriate thinking processes.

Abstract

Algebra becomes an essential topic for all school mathematics topics. Nevertheless, many students still experience difficulties in learning algebra, one of them is senior high school students in Yayasan Graha Asuh Jabal 165, Kabupaten Bandung. Lack of effective learning activity in the class becomes the primary source for students’ difficulty. As an attempt to overcome this problem, the theory of didactic situation (TDS) could be adopted as a reference to implement the learning activity that possibly engages the students to be more active in the learning process. Therefore, this activity is held to help students in understanding the concept of algebraic forms with the learning based on the TDS. The method of this activity consisted of three stages, that was 1) the analysis of students’ difficulty in understanding the algebraic forms, 2) the learning implementation based on the TDS, and 3) the evaluation of students’ learning. The result shows that in the analysis stage, many students did not understand the concept of variables, coefficients, constants, equations, and algebraic operations. The next stage is learning implementation based on the TDS which comprises of the situation of action, formulation, validation, and institutionalization. The last one is evaluation where all students manage to understand the concept of algebraic forms and their application in daily life. This shows an improvement of their conceptual understanding in algebra.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ errors in solving contextual mathematics problems on linear programming, based on Brodie’s theory, through the lens of students’ self-efficacy. Previous studies have generally used Newman Error Analysis and focused more on the procedural stages of problem-solving, whereas studies integrating Brodie’s theory with self-efficacy in solving contextual problems remain limited. This study offers a novel approach, an error analysis that integrates cognitive and affective aspects to gain a more comprehensive understanding of student errors. The study employs a qualitative case study design. It was conducted at a high school in Bulukumba, with a student population of 36. Subjects were selected purposively: three students representing the high-, moderate-, and low-self-efficacy categories. Research instruments included contextual problem-solving tests, a self-efficacy questionnaire, interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, and triangulation to ensure data validity. The results of the study indicate that students with high self-efficacy made only basic errors, such as errors in examples and failure to write conclusions. Students with moderate self-efficacy made basic errors, had missing information, and made appropriate errors, while students with low self-efficacy made a wider variety of errors, namely basic errors, appropriate errors, missing information, and partial insight. These findings indicate that self-efficacy influences the types and levels of errors students make when solving contextual problems. Therefore, improving self-efficacy needs to be a focus in mathematics learning to minimize problem-solving errors.
