Abstract

Abstract

Organic waste constitutes a significant portion of the refuse generated by households and community activities. Improper management of organic waste can lead to various environmental issues, such as unpleasant odors, soil and water pollution, increased disease-vector populations, and greenhouse gas emissions resulting from decomposition. One alternative approach is to process organic waste into compost using simple, effective, and environmentally friendly composting technology. This study aimed to develop technology for converting organic waste into compost and to analyze the characteristics of the resulting product. An experimental method was employed, processing organic waste—consisting of vegetable scraps, fruit waste, and foliage—using a simple composting unit. The composting process involved sorting, shredding, mixing organic materials, moisture adjustment, aeration, and maturation. Parameters monitored included temperature, pH, moisture content, color, odor, texture, and composting duration. The results demonstrated that the composting technology successfully transformed organic waste into a more stable compost product, characterized by a dark brown color, soil-like texture, and a relatively neutral odor. Changes in temperature and pH during the process indicated microbial activity in the decomposition of organic matter. This technology has the potential for implementation at the household, school, and community levels as part of a waste reduction strategy at the source. Processing organic waste into compost supports sustainable environmental management while yielding a product beneficial to plants and soil.
