Abstract

This study explores Islamic law, legal philosophy, and current Islamic culture, focusing on the idea of theological exclusivism in Islamic monotheism through the Qur'anic verse “Do not associate partners with Allah” (Qur’an 4:36). It examines the theological and legal consequences of tawhid, or divine unity, as the core principle for just practices in contemporary Islamic law. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological method within a library-based research context, the research critically evaluates historical theological writings, interpretations of the Qur'an, and modern academic literature. Information was gathered through documentary analysis and processed using the Miles and Huberman interactive framework, which includes steps like reduction, categorization, and thematic analysis. The results highlight three main points: (1) tawhid forms the basis of legal and ethical exclusivity in Islam; (2) the ban on shirk maintains both spiritual purity and social stability; and (3) theological exclusivism offers a basis for a justice-oriented and God-centered understanding of law. The research concludes that an enhanced comprehension of theological exclusivism bolsters the knowledge foundation of Islamic law while adapting to contemporary civilizational changes. The implications include promoting education in law based on theology and the creation of religious policies that reconcile doctrinal clarity with social inclusiveness.

Abstract

In the modern digital era, practices reminiscent of pre-Islamic Jahiliyyah culture-such as shamanism, supernatural rituals, and various forms of divination-have reemerged and become increasingly prominent through television broadcasts and social media platforms. This phenomenon raises significant concerns about its potential influence on Islamic faith and the spiritual integrity of Muslim communities. This research seeks to reexplore the notions of al-jibt and al-thaghut from a Hadith-based perspective, underscoring their relevance in responding to the widespread revival of occult-related activities in contemporary society. Adopting a qualitative research design with a thematic analytical framework, this study utilizes takhrij al-hadith to trace and assess chains of transmission and applies sharḥ al-hadith to interpret the meanings and contextual implications of the examined narrations. The data were gathered through comprehensive library research, concentrating on Hadith sources from Kutub al-Sittah and authoritative commentaries, complemented by digital resources such as Maktabah Shamilah. The findings reveal that many Hadiths addressing al-jibt—including acts such as ‘iyafah (seeking omens from birds), ṭiyarah (pessimistic superstitions), and al-thuruq (divination using lines or stones)—contain weak (ḍa‘if) transmission chains. Nevertheless, the existence of multiple supporting isnād routes alleviates the degree of this weakness, thereby strengthening the Hadiths’ usability in explaining unlawful forms of magic. Further matan analysis confirms that these practices are categorized as prohibited, deceptive, and often linked to satanic manipulation. The discussion emphasizes that these Hadiths maintain strong relevance in confronting modern expressions of occultism, such as contemporary shamanic services, spirit-medium consultations, astrology, talisman usage, and paranormal content propagated through mass media. Although their outward forms may differ from those of the past, the core elements remain consistent with what the Hadith condemns: dependence on powers other than Allah and deviation from the principles of pure monotheism. Consequently, a sound understanding of al-jibt is essential for enhancing Muslim awareness and safeguarding the community from the persistence of misguided supernatural beliefs in the modern world.

Abstract

This study aims to document and analyse the impact of a pedagogical intervention based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) on the accuracy of pronunciation of the English -ed inflection among EFL learners with an Arabic language background in the context of Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions (PTII). This qualitative pedagogical intervention study involved 30 participants (N=30) from several universities and institutions selected using purposive sampling. The intervention was conducted in three structured sessions, integrating form-focused instruction (FFI), memorisation techniques, and mnemonic strategies. Data were collected via observation sheets, field notes, and participant testimonials, and subsequently analysed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Thematic analysis yielded three main themes: (1) increased metacognitive phonological awareness, (2) increased self-efficacy in pronunciation, and (3) the role of Islamic communicative motivation as a driver of learning engagement. The IPA-based intervention supported by mnemonic strategies proved to be effective and contextually relevant for the population of EFL learners with an Arabic language background at PTII. These findings strengthen the empirical basis for the design of EFL pronunciation curricula.

Abstract

The discourse on istiʿādhah (seeking protection) remains particularly relevant in contemporary contexts where practices of spiritual protection, such as ruqyah, tawassul, and popular spiritualism, risk blurring the boundaries between tawḥīd (monotheism) and shirk (polytheism). This study aims to analyze the concept of istiʿādhah as addressed in the fatwas of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz and Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn, highlighting both convergences and divergences in their theological reasoning. The research utilizes a qualitative-comparative approach, employing library research and thematic content analysis, alongside the constant comparative method to examine primary fatwa sources. The findings reveal that both 'ulama agree on istiʿādhah as an essential element of tawḥīd al-ulūhiyyah (the oneness of Allah), which must be directed exclusively to Allah. However, their istinbāṭ (legal reasoning) differs: Ibn Bāz applies a deductive-practical approach focused on ritual guidance, while al-ʿUthaymīn uses an inductive-systematic method that emphasizes theological classification. The primary contribution of this research lies in the reconstruction of the "Jurisprudence of Protection," a novel conceptual framework that systematically classifies istiʿādhah into three categories: sharʿiyyah (prescribed), jāʾizah (permissible), and shirkīyyah (polytheistic). This framework provides crucial theological navigation for fatwa authorities and the Muslim community, helping them distinguish between legitimate spiritual protection practices, those permissible in limited circumstances, and those that deviate from the core principles of tawḥīd in contemporary religious practices.
