Abstract

In each region having different types of soil, one type of soil is expansive clay. In Indonesia, more than 1/5 of the land area in Indonesia are an expansive clay. This type of soil will affected by changes in water content and experience significant shrinkage. Therefore, to improve the soil and minimize shrinkage growth, an effort is needed, one of which is soil stabilization. Physical testing of soil with soil samples in the district Ngasem, Kab. Bojonegoro which is expansive clay soil shows that the CBR value is 3.953%, and the swelling value is 6.1858%. With such physical conditions with low carrying capacity it is necessary to stabilize the soil on clay in Bojonegoro. Stabilization efforts carried out are by chemical stabilization by mixing soil samples with additives in the form of bagasse and lime ash. The results of the physical soil test from the preliminary research conducted by the author by mixing bagasse ash in the soil with variations in levels of 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% showed a mixture of 8% bagasse ash was the optimum level for repairs to the soil. So it is used a mixture of 8% bagasse ash with the addition of variations in lime content of 4%, 6% and 8% of the total weight of the mixture. A mixture of 8% bagasse ash and 6% lime content produced a CBR value of 9,324%, this CBR value increased to 135.87%. While the swelling value is 0.1681%, with the same mixture level. This swelling value decreased to 97.28%. For the value of free development it decreased to 217.7% from the previous one which amounted to 70.59% to 22.22%.

Abstract

Soft soil has more water and air content than solid soil particles, so it has a large settlement and soil consolidation lasts longer. Soil improvement will be able to minimize the settlement and consolidation process by adding preloading PVD combination. The effect of PVD installation and preloading is analyzed using Finite element analysis. An equivalence between plane strain and axisymmetric is made to obtain a 2D finite element analysis that is closer to field conditions. The equivalent equation between axisymmetric to plane strain has been proposed by the Indraratna Method. This study aims to determine the stress-strain behavior, pore water pressure, and stability in the use of PVD as well as the effects of smear zone. The result of the analysis is the greater the permeability value of the disturbed smear zone, the smaller the degree of total consolidation that occurs. The degree of total consolidation is proportional to the magnitude of the settlement that occurs over a certain period of time. Therefore, if the settlement is greater, the value of the degree of total consolidation will follow.

Abstract

Abstract

Expansive clay soil has high potential of swelling due to minerals content which bind water, therefore, soil improvement is required to stabilize the swelling behavior by add binder additive such as lime in deep soil mixing method (DSM). In this study, Finite Element model approach was performed with embankment provided on the top of expansive clay layer to provide bearing layer for road construction. As the deep soil mixing is applied on the subgrade (expansive clay layer), some model variation is performed such as diameter variation with 0.4m; 0.6m; 0.8m, depth variation with 5m; 6.5m; 8m and space variation 0.8 m;1.2m;1.6m; 2.4m. Area ratio parameter also used for ease understanding of deep soil mixing behavior with so many model variations provided. Analysis results shows that higher area ratio of deep soil mixing will provide lower displacement value either immediate displacement or consolidation displacement. Moreover, plot result of area ratio shows that area ratio of 0.4 provide effective value regarding consolidation displacement and duration.

Abstract

The construction process of the Tilong Dam induced significant settlement in the surrounding areas. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of the factors that influenced settlement behavior and improve the reliability of predictive models by using instrumentation data regarding the dam's vertical displacement. Numerical modeling was conducted to consider the actual embankment conditions and analyze the changes in the immediate settlement during and after construction. After the Tilong Dam construction, the measurements and numerical analysis showed settlements ranging from 0 to 832 mm. It was noted that settlements were expected during and after the construction, particularly at the dam's mid-sections. The back analysis method was employed to establish the values for material properties, specifically Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, which affected the displacement. A multivariate regression comparison between the observed and predicted data yielded a determination coefficient (R²) of 0.914. This indicated a strong correlation between the observed and predicted values.

Abstract

Slope collapse can be caused by changes in load or geological conditions of the soil. Slope collapse events often occur during the rainy season in the Ponorogo area, Pacitan East Java, Indonesia, which causes closed transportation to and out of the Ponorogo area. This study aims to investigate the failure mechanism and landslide mitigation. The field investigations were conducted using geoelectricity and soil sampling to be analyzed in the laboratory. This research employed the Schlumberger geoelectrical configuration method to determine the subsurface rock lithology arrangement. The study involved acquiring data on four geoelectrical lines with a length of 135 meters. The collected field data was then processed and modeled to obtain an overview of the subsurface rock lithology arrangement. The Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the soil type and the soil parameters unit weight (?), cohesion (c'), and shear angle (?'). The laboratory data was input into software to obtain the safety factor. The geo-electrical results showed layers of clay and tuff, which identified a water flow between them, the landslide plane. Based on the finite element analysis, the landslide planes were almost coincident. Slope stability is achieved by changing the geometry and reinforcing it with piles.

Abstract

Geopolymer is an eco-friendly binder derived from natural or artificial precursors such as fly ash and slag. The purpose of this research is to investigate the response of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) with Geobead (GB) filler based geopolymer to soil in terms of vertical deflection values using Axisymmetric model Finite Element Method (FEM), which compared with unbound materials such as granular base courses or bound materials such as cement-treated base (CTB), lean concrete (LC), and foamed concrete (FC). The model was loaded with incremental static loading due to vehicle wheel load, and the pavement behavior, such as vertical surface deflection at the base layer with bonded and unbonded materials, was analyzed. The analysis indicated that using bonded materials based on geopolymer resulted in smaller deflection values when compared to base course materials. The addition of geobead affects the unit weight reduction of the pavement material. However, increasing the rise in geobead content results in a vertical deflection value due to reduced bonding between RCA grains. The deflection value of the RCA-GB-based geopolymer in all variations of GB content is below that of the granular materials. However, geopolymer-based materials with the addition of geobeads resulted in greater deflection than CTB, LC, and FC.
