Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe the kinds of figure of speech and discover the existence of figure of speech that is delivered by Hula-hula, boru, and dongan tubu in Toba Batak saur matua ceremony. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive. The data were the utterances gathered from umpasa that are delivered by Hula-hula, boru, and dongan tubu of 3 Toba Batak saur matua ceremonies in Rantau prapat and Tarutung. The data analyzed by using theory of descriptive analysis. from identifying the data that are needed for this research, classifying the data based on the theory of figures of speech and analyzing the data based on the theories that were used. The findings are there were 7 out of 10 kinds of figure of speech were found in the umpasa of Toba Batak saur matua ceremony. The most dominant figure of speech in Toba Batak saur matua ceremony was simile. Toba Batak people tent to deliver umpasa through simile which compared between two dissimilar things by using the comparative term (like, as) and described to the first qualities of the second of invest the first with connotations inherent in the other. Keyword: Figurative Language, Toba Batak, Saur matua ceremony

Abstract

This study discusses about language use occurred by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objective of this study is to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. Keywords: Language Use, Gender, Talk Show

Abstract

The research deals with translation shift in Garfield takes his licks a bilingual text. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases, and clauses were translated from English into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) intra system shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class, change in ranks and change in number. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: Structure Shift, Class Shift, Unit Shift, Intra System Shift.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the pragmatics acquisition of five-years old Indonesian children in casual conversation. The objectives of this descriptive qualitative research were to: (1) find the type of the pragmatics acquired by a five-years-old child, (2) to find out the way of how do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in casual conversation, and (3) to find out the reason of why do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in this way. The data were obtained from three Indonesian boy children who lived in Batakness environment where most of their friends spoke in Batakness language. This study was located at lintongnihuta, Humbang Hasundutan regency. In collecting the data. this study applied documentation with audio visual recorder as the instrument of collecting the data. The technique of data analysis used in this study was descriptive technique, and the data were described trough the process of transcribing the data and reducing the data by the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying and transforming the transcripts of the data, after that, displaying the data and at last drawing the conclusions. The finding indicates that the subject of this study had mastered pragmatics, were the types of pragmatics acquired are exchange structures, turn taking, repairs, and cohesion. While the most dominant pragmatics used was turn taking. The way of  five years-old Indonesian children acquire the pragmatics in casual conversation were by united the environment’s effect, culture, habits, mood, and their focus on their own mind, needs, and what they were thinking about. And the dominant affected by focusing to their mind only. Then based on the interview with their parents and other caregivers, it’s found that the reason of using pragmatics in highest frequency were because the children often focused to the things in their mind only.Keywords: Pragmatics, Acquisition, Indonesian Children, Casual Conversation

Abstract

This research deals with the conversational styles by male and female sellers in business transactions at traditional market “Pasar Sentosa Baru” Medan. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The subjects of 8 persons namely 4 male sellers and 4 female sellers were taken which they produced 20 conversations for each genders. The ages ranged from 30 to 60 years old. They come from various sellers, namely fish, chicken, vegetables, fruits, and spice. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, field notes, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings show that there were five types of conversational styles used by male and female sellers. In conversational styles used by male sellers; amount of talk (30%), interruption (26.7%), conversational support (21.7%), compliment (16.6%), and tentativeness (5%). In conversational styles used by female sellers; interruption (29%), amount of talk (23%), conversational support (24%), tentativeness (15%), and compliment (9%). In conversational styles in male sellers business transaction, the more dominant responses refer to talk of amount because they talk much in interaction in public context, while for female, the more dominant responses refer to interruption because the female sellers are taken as a violation and a sign of conversational dominance.Keywords: Conversational styles, Gender, Traditional Market.

Abstract

This study deals with language shift and language maintenance of intermarriages Chinese families.It aims at finding out the factors make language shift and language maintenance occur, finding out how language shift and language maintain occur and finding out why language shift and language maintain occur.This study was conducted in qualitative method.The sources of data were four intermarriage Chinese families; meanwhile the data was their  utterances.The data was analyzed by using Interactive Model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. To find out what factors affecting language shift and maintenance, the researcher used Holmes’s theory. Based on the data analysis, the first finding shows that there were six factors  affecting language shift and language maintenance occured in intermarriage chinese families namely bilingualism, migration, economic, environment, demographic, and attitude. And as the second finding was that the language shift and language maintenance occured since there are two languages exist in interethnic marriage. The existence of two languages means the competition between two languages. And as the third finding was the reasons why language shift and language maintenance occured are bilingualism in which the man or woman mastered two languages which led to language maintenance, migration in which the women migrate to follow their husband, economic factor dealing with the men and women’s occupations, environment where they lived in homogenous or heterogenous ethnic, demographic factor, and attitude which might be postive or negative. Keywords: language shift, maintenance, intermarriage, qualitative
