Abstract

 Peningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran pada siswa SMP IT Daarul Istiqlal dan SMP IT Rahmat melalui kegiatan pendampingan terhadap guru-guru dalam pengembangan sistem pembelajaran online berbasis aplikasi Google Meet bagi guru-guru. Kegiatan penelitian ini dilakukan dengan melakukan proses pendampingan sistem pembelajaran online berbasis aplikasi yang disebarluaskan kemasyarakat khususnya di sekolah-sekolah sebagai pemecah persoalan pengembangan pembelajaran di era pandemi covid-19.Berdasarkan hasil kegiatan didapat simpulan bahwa pembelajaran online dapat meningkatkan proses belajar mahasiswa yang lebih mandiri, kreatif serta inovatif. Apabila materi yang disampaikan pada google meeting dirancang secara detail, dan sistematis, maka pembelajaran bahasa inggris di SMP IT Daarul Istiqlal dan SMP ITRahmat Marindal I Kecamatan Patumbakdapat meningkatkan kualitas pengetahuan siswa. Kendala yang dihadapi dalam proses pembelajaran online ini dapat dilakukaan dengan kegiatan sosialisasi lebih intens diantara guru, guru dengan siswa. Selain itu, mencari solusi alternatif dalam menghadapi kendala diantaranya siswa mencari alternatif dengan memakai modem internet pribadi, warnet, atau dengan menggunakan aplikasi wifi.id berbayar yang telah disediakan oleh pihak sekolah guna meminimalisir kendala.  Secara umum, pembelajaran berbasis online ini manarik, menantang kemandirian siswa dalam belajar dan sebagai solusi terbaik di massa pandemic covid-19 yang menuntut physical distancing.

Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze the language change in Indonesian language. The analysis was focused on the Indonesian adjectives change found in social media (Instagram). This research was conducted by using qualitative method. The data of this study were the most common thirty adjectives found in social media especially Instagram. as the data source because most of young generations nowadays tend to use Instagram as a mean of communication. The researcher observed and chose the most common thirty adjectives found on Instagram by using an observation list. There were some techniques of data analysis performed, namely: determining, observing, choosing, translating, analyzing, and drawing conclusion. Based on the data analysis conducted, it was found that all the adjectives are changing into special terms which are totally different form the original words. Furthermore, language change is caused by the globalization and the interaction of people. It was also found that some of the words are changing into English. Abbreviation and contractions also occur in the process of language change.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the students’ needs of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan in learning speaking using media that is glove and finger puppets. The nature of this study was Research and Development (R & D). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, planning, developing the media, obtaining the experts’ judgments, revising and finally writing the final product glove and finger puppets. This study involved 24 students of the first year students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan as the research subjects. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. The researcher was develop five puppets. All of the puppet was kind of animal: They are caterpillar, bee, ladybug, dragonfly, and butterfly. The puppet are use to help the students in describing animals. Then, based on the expert judgment, the media are appropriate for the first year students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of the appropriateness of the media is 3.6. It is categorized as “Very Good” as its positions is in the interval 3.28< x < 4.03.Key words: Teaching Media, Speaking Skill, Glove and Finger Puppets

Abstract

This study was about an analysis of Scientific Approach in teaching English classroom. The aimed of this study were (a) to analyze the implementation of the five scientific approach in English language teaching, and (b) to find out how the teachers comprehend the concept of Scientific Approach. The subject of this research were the English teachers of SMA NEGERI 6 MEDAN. This research used descriptive qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in three ways by observing, recording, and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Miles and Huberman (1994). The result of this study were the following, (a) the first teacher was implement the observing, experimenting, and communicating process. The second teacher was implement the experimenting, associating, and communicating process. The teachers have not implemented all the five stages of Scientific Approach, (b) it found that the teachers showed lack of comprehension relating to the concept of Scientific Approach.Keywords: Scientific Approach, 2013 Curriculum, Implementation.

Abstract

The study was aimed to to develop learning media in Writing Descriptive Text for Grade VII of Junior High School Students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was Grade VII of SMP Ypi Amir Hamzah Medan. The instruments of data collection were gathered  by administring interview and distributing questionnaire. The study conducted interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students need English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about writing descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts namely English lecturer and English teacher. The product result was Word Wall which is modifying House based on destination of North Sumatera. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used on writing descriptive text by getting the average percentage 92% categorized excellent.Keywords: Writing, Descriptive Text, Word Wall, Research and Development

Abstract

This study was about Discovery Learning Model in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text for Seventh Grade of SMP SWASTA SRO MATITI. The type of research method in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data collection used in this study is observation, interview, questionnaire and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the teacher has implemented the discovery learning model well. Student responses to the discovery learning model are different, this is because the intellectual knowledge of each student in expressing ideas in written form in English is different. Some of the challenges faced by teacher after applying the discovery learning model in learning teaching write descriptive texts, there are the simulation stage, the problem statement stage and the data processing stage. This was revealed when the researcher observed students and interviewed teacher after the teaching and learning process was completed.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate the types of teachers’ oral corrective feedback on speaking skill that the students prefer in grade tenth of SMK Negeri 4 Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The framework undertaken is proposed by Lyster and Ranta and the interview questions were adapted from Thorsteinsen. The data was analyzed in four steps: 1). Data Collection, 2) Data Reduction, 3). Data display, 4). Conclusion and Drawing verification. The findings found that there were 4 kinds of oral corrective feedback that the teachers gave, namely Clarification Request, Elicitation, Explicit Correction, dan Metalinguistic Feedback. The most dominant of teachers’ oral corrective feedback that the students prefer was Explicit Correction. It was 10 data or 41,7%. Based on the analysis interview, the reason why students prefer the type of teachers’ oral corrective feedback on speaking was because it could make the students easy to understand and know the correct anwser not in a long time because the teachers gave it immediately. The finding suggested that the English teacher should give the written feedback to students’ writing task to enable them improve the writing skill.

Abstract

This study focused on teachers and students in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model. The aims of this study are (a) to find out the structures that occur in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model, (b) to describe how the exchanges are realized with the structures of the two teachers. This research used qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in three ways by observing, recording and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model (1975). The result of this study were the following, 1) there were three structures that occurred in English classroom interaction. The structures that occurred were initiation, response, and also feedback. There were 88 initiation, 95 responses, and 12 feedback of the overall utterances produced by teacher and students of XI Science 1. There were 111 initiation, 113 responses, and 15 feedback of the overall utterances produced by teacher and students of XI Social 1. 2) It was found that there were six types of exchanges which were realized with the structures between two teachers of two classes. The exchanges, namely: teacher elicit, teacher inform, teacher direct, student elicit, student inform, and check. In XI Science 1, it was found that the teacher inform was three, the teacher direct was three, the teacher elicit was sixty three, the student elicit was four, the student inform was one, and check was fourteen. In XI Social 1, it was found that the teacher inform was four, the teacher direct was fifteen, the teacher elicit was fifty three, the student elicit was three, the student inform was one, and check was thirty five.In teacher inform, teacher direct, teacher elicit, and check is started by the teacher initiate the students by informing, directing, and asking the question of the material to get the students’ response. In student elicit and student inform were started by the students initiate the teacher by informing, and asking the question of the material to get the teacher’s response or feedback. Keywords:IRF,Free Exchanges, Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model.

Abstract

This study aimed to (1) describe the implementation strategy in teaching writing recount text (2) to analyze the barriers faced by the teacher in implementing fishbone strategy in teaching writing recount text. The participants of this research were 20 students of tenth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Habinsaran. The type of research method in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data collection instruments used in this study were observation, interview, and documentation. The teacher was applied the fishbone strategy starting from the Preparation stage, Pre Teaching Stage, Whilst Teaching Stage to the final stage of Post Teaching Stage. Each stage of the teacher performed well and the students' actions when applying the fishbone strategy in writing recount texts were also good. But in implementing the strategy, the teacher has barriers dealing with student deficiencies. It was revealed when the researcher interviewed the teacher after the teaching and learning process was completed.Keywords: Fishbone Strategy, Writing, Recount Text

Abstract

This research is about teachers strategies in teaching speaking to tenth grade students at SMKN 3 Medan. The aims of this study are (1) to analyze the strategies used by English teachers in teaching speaking to tenth grade students, and (2) to find out the difficulties by teachers in implementing the strategy to tenth grade students. The subject of this study were two English teachers at SMKN 3 Medan. This study used descriptive qualitative research. Research data collection was done by observation, video recording and interviews. The result of this study are, (1) The first teacher applied the strategies in teaching speaking, namely question for understanding, showing and telling, students working together, plenty of practice and flexible time. The second teacher applies showing and telling, plenty of practice, flexible time and students working together. The two English teachers did not apply clear lesson goals, summarizing, providing students with feedback, teach strategies not just content, and nurture metacognition.  It is known that the two English teachers of ten grade students in SMKN 3 Medan have not implemented the ten strategies in teaching speaking process. (2) it was found that both teachers had difficulties in implementing the strategies in teaching speaking. The difficulties faced by the two of teachers are the same, namely inhibition, nothing to say, low in participation and mother   tongue use.
