Abstract

Abstract

Agroforestry, a farming system that integrates various types of perennial and seasonal crops, as well as livestock elements, has emerged as an alternative in many regions to enhance farmers' income, protect the environment, and address local economic challenges. The role of agroforestry in supporting sustainable natural resource management is crucial. This system helps maintain soil fertility, reduce erosion, regulate hydrological patterns, sequester carbon, and enhance biodiversity. Moreover, agroforestry also contributes to improving farmers' food security through diverse and sustainable yields, as well as strengthening the economic and social sustainability of communities. Despite some challenges in increasing agroforestry productivity, its implementation is expected to address issues related to forest land conversion, enhance food security, and make a significant contribution to maintaining environmental balance and overall community welfare.

Abstract

This study critically assesses regional development policies on Sumbawa Island, particularly the PIJAR program (Cattle, Corn, and Seaweed) and the corn nomenclature, through the perspectives of environmental ethics and critical theory. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research integrates a spatial analysis of land cover changes in the Padolo River Basin during 2017-2024 with a policy text examination based on Jürgen Habermas's theory of the "Colonization of the Lifeworld." The findings reveal that these policies reflect structural anthropocentrism, prioritizing economic production targets over ecological integrity in a top-down fashion. The consequence is a destructive transformation of the regional landscape, where the depletion of upstream forests triggers Policy-Induced Disaster phenomena, including increased frequency of floods and extreme droughts. The study concludes that the ecological crisis on Sumbawa Island is the result of a failed development vision that neglects the carrying capacity of nature and the government's inability to provide alternative employment opportunities for the community

Abstract

Abstract

The global energy transition has encouraged the utilization of forest biomass, including residues such as branches, leaves, and deadwood, as renewable energy sources through co-firing schemes in Indonesia. However, existing policies remain dominated by techno-economic logic and tend to overlook fundamental ethical-ecological dimensions, particularly the intrinsic value and ecological functions of forest residues in maintaining ecosystem integrity. This study aims to analyze the ecocentrism perspective on the utilization of forest waste as renewable energy and to formulate an ethical framework for ecologically just forest biomass governance. The research employed a qualitative approach through a narrative literature review of 58 selected articles from the Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases published within the last 5–10 years. Narrative thematic analysis identified four major themes: the intrinsic value of forest waste from an ecocentric perspective, the ecological functions of forest residues in nutrient cycling and habitat maintenance, the ethical-ecological risks of biomass utilization, and the ethical threshold framework for forest waste utilization. As its primary conceptual contribution, this study proposes the “Ecocentric Ethical Threshold” (EET) framework, consisting of five principles: sufficiency, regenerative integrity, minimum residue retention, ecological value-based certification, and intergenerational justice. This framework implies the need to recalibrate Indonesia’s biomass co-firing policies by integrating verified ecological thresholds as prerequisites for harvesting, ensuring that the energy transition does not compromise the integrity of Indonesia’s tropical forest ecosystems.

Abstract

Forest sustainability in Indonesia faces significant challenges, including deforestation, forest degradation, and tenure conflicts. Although social forestry has been promoted as a policy instrument to balance ecological protection and community welfare, its implementation remain largely dominated by an anthropocentric paradigm that treats forest primarily as economic resources. As a result, sustainability is often interpreted narrowly and fails to adequately address broader ecological and social concerns. Moreover, studies examining social forestry through an ecocentric ethical perspective remain limited, indicating a conceptual gap in developing more holistic forest management models. This Study aims to reconstruct the concept of sustainability in social forestry based on an ecocentric ethical perspective and to explore its policy implications. A narrative literature review with a conceptual approach was employed, analyzing relevant publications form 2015 to 2025. The finding reinforce the core argument: achieving sustainability in social forestry requires an ecocentric shift that recognizes forests’ intrinsic value. This new framework integrates ecological and cultural capacity indicators, incorporates intrinsic value in licensing, and strengthens participatory governance with ecological justice. This study contributes a novel conceptual framework that is both integrative and operational for advancing more equitable, adaptive, and sustainable social forestry practices.

Abstract

Global environmental crises such as land degradation, deforestation, pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change show that anthropocentric-oriented natural resource management hasnot been able to create environmental sustainability. Indonesia as a megabiodiversity country also faces serious environmental problems, such as the area of degraded land reaching 24.3-48.3 million hectares, the rate of net deforestation of 175.4 thousand hectares per year, and the decline in soil biodiversity on intensive agricultural land. This condition shows the need for an alternative paradigm that pays more attention to ecological sustainability. This research aims to analyze the ethics of ecocentrism as a paradigm of sustainable natural resource and land management in Indonesia, identify its main principles, examine its implementation in environmental management, and formulate sustainable development policy recommendations. The research uses a literature review method with a descriptive quantitative analysis approach. Data is obtained from scientific articles, government reports, and international documents relevant to sustainable environmental management. A total of 78 articles and documents were analyzed in depth. The results of the study show that the ethics of ecocentrism places nature as an entity that has intrinsic value and is applied through agroforestry strategies, soil and water conservation, forest rehabilitation, and local community empowerment. In addition, the integration of sustainable development principles in national policies such as the SDGs and FOLU Net Sink 2030 shows a shift towards more ecologically oriented environmental management. However, its implementation still faces challenges in the form of low environmental awareness, limited funding, and conflicts of interest between natural resource exploitation and environmental conservation. However, the ethics of ecocentrism can be a relevant alternative paradigm in the sustainable management of natural resources and land in Indonesia because it is able to encourage a balance between human needs and environmental sustainability. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen ecosystem-based policies, increase environmental education, support funding, and cooperation between the government, the community, academics, and the private sector to support the implementation of sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

The ecological crisis triggered by the massive exploitation of natural resources reflects the absence of an adequate value foundation in natural resource management practices in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the axiological framework as a philosophical instrument in examining the values underlying natural resource management, identify its implications for environmental sustainability, and formulate a relevant environmental axiology paradigm as an ethical foundation for sustainable natural resource management. The method employed is qualitative with a library research approach and content analysis technique applied to various relevant and up to date scientific literature sources. The findings indicate that natural resource management in Indonesia remains dominated by an anthropocentric-economistic value orientation of a pragmatic-exploitative nature, resulting in massive deforestation, biodiversity loss, ecosystem pollution, and socio-ecological inequality. Conversely, an ecologically sustainable value orientation grounded in local wisdom, the precautionary principle, and intergenerational equity has been proven to contribute significantly to ecosystem recovery. This study concludes that the paradigm of ecocentrism integrated with biocentrism constitutes the most relevant ethical foundation for sustainable natural resource management. Paradigmatic reform in natural resource regulation and policy that integrates the values of respect for nature, moral responsibility, and ecological solidarity stands as the primary recommendation of this research.
