Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the teacher and students talk percentage, teacher characteristics and the roles of the teacher during classroom interaction classroom interaction at SMPN 1 Berastagi in 2016/2017 academic year. This study used descriptive design. The subjects of this study were 38 students Grade VIII and an English teacher. The data were analyzed by using Flander’s formulates and interaction observation tally sheet. The instrument of collecting data ware observation tally sheet and video recording. The analysis showed that teacher talk percentage was 71,90 %  and  28, 09% for students. It was found that teacher was dominant in talking than student. The teacher highest characteristics found were teacher control means dominated by commands or direction and content cross which were dominated by lecturing and questioning. For the roles of teacher, the two highest were teacher as controller and teacher as resource. From the result the writer concludes that the students were passive in the classroom interaction, on the other hand teacher hold almost the whole activities in the classroom.     Key words: Classroom interaction, Flanders interaction analysis category system

Abstract

This study concern on how reading text materials are developed for fashion design vocational school. The objectives of this research were: (1) to design English reading material for students in Fashion Design Program, (2) to develop English reading material for students in Fashion Design Program. This study was conducted by using developmental research (R & D). The subject of the research was grade twelve in SMK N 10 Medan consisting of 33 students. Instrumentation for collecting data was document, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ need learning English based on their program in school. Based on the students’ need analysis, it was got some reading materials from the students’ book are not appropriate with the syllabus. Then, there is reading material that should develop based on their syllabus and their need. After the materials had been designed, the reading materials were done. The results show of the 84.1% from the Expert – lecturer and 92.1% from the Expert – English teacher, for the new reading material and the categorized is “relevant” as the reading material criteria. The developed teaching materials were related to the vocation that the students had; it was fashion design program. The development of materials followed six stages; those were gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new reading material, validating expert, revising new reading material from experts’ suggestion and developing reading material (final product). Keywords: Develop, Reading Text Materials, Fashion Design, Vocational School, Developmental Research

Abstract

Reading is the basic in learning every subject. The more understanding the text, the more information students can gain. However, the reading materials that the students use is not appropriate based on syllabus. Therefore, the reading materials should be developed to fulfil the syllabus and the students' needs also. Because English is included Content Area Reading, so the development of reading materials is based on content area which focus on strengthen the vocabularies, specifically the unfamiliar ones, by giving glossary and related pictures. The developed text is only focus in the first semester which is descriptive and recount text. The research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Medan. The data was taken from interviewing the English teacher and distributing questionnaires for 30 students in grade VIII-4. The data showed that students need materials which is related to their environment and constructed by familiar vocabularies. Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestion are directed to the English teacher who is teaching in that school to provide reading materials based on syllabus and students' needs regularly. Keywords: Developing, Reading Materials, Content Area
