Abstract

Most of Indonesian red rice is not grown in dry land. New varieties could be breeded through mutation breeding. This research objective was to evaluate the selection strategy of drought tolerant on red rice. The study was conducted on ultisol soil in Bangka Belitung Province, Indonesia, in February 2012-February 2015. It consisted of three activities, selection M5, evaluation of selected M5 and evaluation of drought critical period on selected M6. Mutant of M5 was selected and evaluated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) -0.5 MPa and less of soil moisture. Selected M6 was evaluated to observe a critical period of drought stress. Evaluation with PEG produces five superior mutants that more vigor than the elders. Selection on low humidity shows that M5-GR150-1-9 produces higher filled grain and weight filled grain than other mutants and elders. The selected red rice line M5-GR150-1-9-13, has a better tolerance towards drought than its control. It could be obtained such mutant lines which have a high yield, early maturing and drought tolerant from the result of six generations gamma irradiation mutant selection.

Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating both direct and indirect impacts, and heritability values of characters regarding the potential of corn production and resistance to downy mildew. The result of this investigation is required to determine some criteria taken into account for selection process of downy mildew-resistant corn breeding with high yield. The field experiment was conducted at Research Centre of Agriculture Faculty, Brawijaya University from January to April 2012. Five varieties of hybrid crown and five inbreeding lines were employed, and Randomised Block Design was applied with two replications. As observed, the characters held heritability ranging from average to high, except for heritability of length and width of stomata on the lower surface of the leaves which was categorised as low. Moreover, the stomata density found on lower surface of the leaves was directly and positively correlated to the intensity of attack by downy mildew, which, then, was used as criteria selection in downy mildew-resistance. The intensity of disease and the density of the stomata on lower surface of the leaves accounted for direct and negative correlation to corn production, while the length and diameter of corncob was responsible for direct and positive correlation to corn production. The betterment of corn production can be coped by improving the plant resistance to downy mildew and characters of corncob diameter. Keywords: path-analysis, corn, downy mildew

Abstract

Men involvement in family planning needs to be increased by providing natural spermicide from natural source which is safer. One of them is kalangkala seed which is endemic plant in South Kalimantan. The spermicide effect from methanol extract of kalangkala seed to mice spermatozoa was studied in this research by in vitro method. Spermatozoa suspension was taken from epididymis cauda of twenty five male Balb/c mice. This research used a complete randomized design with five treatments i.e control which without any addition; spermatozoa suspension + NaCMC 0.5%; spermatozoa suspension + methanol extract of kalangkala seed 0.1%; spermatozoa suspension + methanol extract of kalangkala seed 0.3%; and spermatozoa suspension + methanol extract of kalangkala seed 0.5% with five repetitions for each treatment. The result of this study showed that methanol extract of kalangkala seed caused decrease of motility and movement velocity mice spermatozoa until achieve zero value in 0.5% concentration. Key words: kalangkala seed, mice, spermatozoa, natural spermicide

Abstract

Purwokerto Wetan Village is the largest contributor to the Waste Bank in Banyumas Regency, with a total of 51585.48 kg of waste from a total of 19 KSM registered in the SalinMas Application or Banyumas Online Garbage. The objectives of this research are 1) to evaluate the institutional, regulatory, financing, technical operational aspects and community participation in waste management at TPST KSM Sae, Purwokerto Wetan Village. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative with the subject of the research, namely 1) Key informants: KSM Sae Manager and Purwokerto Wetan Village Officers in the Waste Sector. 2) Main informants: Sanitarian at the Purwokerto Timur I Health Center and the Waste Sector at the Banyumas Regency Environmental Service. 3) Supporting informants: Residents of Purwokerto Wetan Village, users of SalinMas and local community leaders. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews and observations. The validity of the data was tested by triangulation of sources and methods. The results and discussion of this research are 1) Institutional aspect, KSM Sae has met the requirements written in SNI 3242-2008. There are no human resources that work in the field of waste management. 2) Regulatory aspects, most of the respondents do not know the legal basis used for the formation of KSM at the international, national and regional levels. 3) The financing system at KSM Sae is in accordance with SNI 32420-2008 that for the procurement of equipment is assisted by DLH while the operational and maintenance costs are managed by KSM itself through cash. And the amount of dues or levies that must be paid by residents is not listed in the Banyumas Regency Regional Regulation Number 9 of 2020, but the amount is returned to the authority of KSM. 4) The operational techniques applied at KSM Sae are in accordance with SNI 3242-2008 and Banyumas Regency Perda Number 9 of 2020. There is no process for processing waste into energy recycling and processing household B3 waste. 5) Community participation in Purwokerto Wetan Village is still lacking. This can be seen from the not yet optimal, this is due to the lack of public awareness to manage waste from the source.
