Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of women in Indonesia humors that appear through the application of whatsapp conversation. This analysis is based on the opinion of Crawford (2003) and Sen (2012) about gender relations, linguistics, and humors. The focus of the study is the use of indeksial meaning and polysemy in constructing a humorous story in women. After the analysis, it was found that humors developing in the application media of whatsapp conversation tended to perpetuate sexist patriarchal values such as portraying women as a highly compliant and passive. In terms of the structure, most of the humors used several techniques of misalignment to cause the value of humor in the reader's mind. Most of the female figures appeared to be in the private or domestic space. In addition, the data show that most of the humors used figurative polysemy, especially in describing sexual activities. In this case, the women were always associated with inanimate objects, such as in describing sexual activities or woman genitals. The indeksial meanings of the language used were always based on the paradigm and the interests of men that are in line with patriarchal values. This eventually led to symbolic violence on women. Keywords: humors, polysemy, symbolic violence, women

Abstract

This study examines the usage of symbolic violence in the discourse of the live-stream of an Indonesian virtual youtuber (vtuber), Kanna Tamachi, using qualitative approach and post-structural discourse analysis (DA) method. The focus of this study is on textual elements of language violence used by the Vtuber and their relation to viewer in their social context. This study aims to examine the relations between the usage of symbolic violence and the viewer’s reception. Through the DA method, the linguistic elements of the Vtuber are specifically studied in relation to the language violence content. However, the violent language is studied in the context of local culture, the meanings of which are relevant to values, norms, and characteristics of the local culture. The result of this study confirms that the language violence used by the Vtuber in the context of local culture in East Java is not always negative or destructive. Instead, it provides positive and constructive value by attracting and entertaining viewers, and giving them senses of familiarity and closeness. It also provides economic value to the Vtuber through their status as commodities.

Abstract

The warrior character is an important element in the storyline and a narrative developer in silat films. The warrior is the main character with distinctive characteristics in Silat's stories, especially the visual character. Talent is supported by make-up with a body shape that tends to be static to differentiate the role. This research explores the relationship between character make-up, body shape, and character, including stereotypes of warrior characters in silat films. This research used content analysis with a physiognomy theory approach to read the characters in the characters' make-up. In addition, somatotype theory is used to analyze characters based on body shape. A case study was conducted on the Indonesian Silat film Wiro Sableng (2018), focusing on the main hero, heroine, and villain characters and representing three body types.

Abstract

Different cinematic contexts reflect filmmakers' varied perspectives and intentions, shaping the visual ideologies presented on screen. One principal means by which filmmakers articulate such ideologies is through costume design. Costumes function not merely as clothing but as symbolic artefacts that convey social, cultural, and ideological meanings. They play a vital role in shaping audience perceptions of characters and their roles while revealing more profound insights into identity, values, and worldviews. Previous research has highlighted how costumes contribute to character identity, particularly in terms of status, role, and psychological attributes. This study employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory and content analysis to explore the denotative and connotative meanings of costumes. The aim is to deepen the understanding of costume as a visual medium and to examine its ideological function, particularly in character representation. The analysis focuses on the character Anggini in the Wiro Sableng series (1995) and the movie (2018). Findings indicate that Anggini’s costume in the 1995 series reflects traditional cultural values, emphasising modesty, elegance, and femininity. In contrast, the 2018 film's costumes portray female strength more explicitly, influenced by Western aesthetics and the film’s multinational context. A structural costume pattern for female warrior characters typically consists of traditional female attire on the upper body, accompanied by male or unisex garments below for enhanced agility, and functional footwear for combat. These findings offer practical insights for emerging costume or fashion designers working with female warrior archetypes in Indonesian cinema.

Abstract

In the context of scientific writing, the use of references or source material is of significant importance in ensuring the scientific rigour and quality of the paper in question. It is imperative that any quality scientific work make use of credible and reputable references, whether at the national or international level. It is not sufficient to simply use reputable references; the ability to manage reference sources is also required when presenting a literature review and research methods. Effective management of reference sources ensures that scientific work is free from plagiarism. The objective of this activity is to equip lecturers with the skills to utilise a reference manager, thereby streamlining the citation process and guaranteeing the inclusion of all referenced material in the bibliography. This programme constitutes the second activity in the series of training sessions on the writing of scientific papers, which were conducted by the Literacy, Media, and Culture Group in 2022. The training will provide lecturers with an understanding of the principles of writing quality scientific papers, as well as practical tips and techniques for implementing these principles in their own work. This activity aims to equip lecturers with the skills to avoid plagiarism and adapt their ideas to the format or style of the intended journal, ensuring that their work is written in standardised academic language. Following this training, lecturers should be able to produce scientific journals that meet the standards required for publication in reputable national and international journals.
