Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of Nglanggeran village, Gunung Kidul Regency, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This village, which was before known as a desolate, impoverished, and water-scarce location, has been turned into an ecotourism hub that has won numerous accolades on a national and worldwide scale. This study employs a qualitative approach from a socio-technical perspective based on actor-network theory (ANT). ANT provides analytical tools that allow us to trace human-nonhuman associations as they proliferate and bring about socio-technical changes. The results of the analysis describe Nglanggeran's transformation in terms of phases, each of which is characterized by distinct socio-technical associations or networks. The first phase was aimed at instilling environmental consciousness within the community. In the second phase, the principles of ecotourism began to be gradually introduced into the community ethos. The third phase is characterized by the unification of diverse stakeholders in the advancement of ecotourism initiatives in Nglanggeran Village. This collective endeavor encompasses bolstering community trust, governmental endorsement, and the strategic integration of technology into ecotourism management paradigms. Each successive phase from inception to the present shows the increase of key actors, facilitating the transformation of Nglanggeran Village from post-disaster dilapidation to a state of enhanced welfare fostered by the auspices of ecotourism. The research findings attest to the multifaceted engagement of local and non-local actors in effectuating the transformation of Nglanggeran Village. Moreover, it is a socio-technical network in which various technical and natural resources from various sites (from the past and from overseas) are brought together to create a ‘new locality’ in Nglanggeran village.

Abstract

The development of the science techno park (STP) in Indonesia aims to facilitate innovation-based industrial growth. Concurrently, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is committed to realizing an entrepreneurial university by leveraging research results through the ITB-STP, also known as the ITB Innovation Park (IIP). The IIP acts as an innovation center that connects research with market needs and functions as an innovation commercialization accelerator. Research using the Multi-Level Perspective Framework indicates policy shifts in STP development during the 2015– 2019 and 2020–2024 periods. Despite producing various innovative products, IIP faces challenges in transitioning the socio-technical system for commercializing research outputs, particularly in integrating with the broader regime and ensuring innovation sustainability. IIP’s initiatives demonstrate instances of fit & fit; however, during the fit & stretch phase, IIP continues to encounter challenges, particularly concerning market responses to the innovative products offered. This indicates that the stretching process remains in progress. Consequently, IIP’s success in reshaping the regime depends on enhanced collaboration, systematic innovation validation, and supportive government policies to foster the establishment of a new innovation-based regime.

Abstract

Understanding the existential relation between human being and social entity has been a major theme in human sciences. Such an intellectual enquiry is not only important for theoretical purposes, but also of highly relevant for practical life. Within the Western contemporary social sciences, two distinct approaches have recently been attracting wide attention, namely the critical realism and the actor-network theory. The critical realism seeks to explore the interaction mechanism between human subjective individualand its surrounding objective social structure by ascribing independent existential status to each of them, i.e., the subjective existence and the objective existence. In opposite to this, the actor-network theory denies the independent existence of the subject and the object altogether. For actornetwork theory, the question of existence should be answer by tracing the relations that are performed, or enacted, by human individual agents. In other words, existence is relational and performative. Within the Islamictraditions, the works of Ibn Khaldun have been highly respected as a major contribution in the understanding of human being and social behavior and structure. In his Muqaddimah, Ibn Khaldun asserts that human being is inherently political, and human individuals cooperation is fundamental to their collective existence. The aim of the paper is to present a conceptual framework in which the above-described theoretical works could be put side-by-side in such a way as to gain a theoretical synthesis. In this way, we hope that the paper could contribute to the theme of Islamic human sciences by way of dialog between Western and Islamic traditions.
