Abstract

In pharmacy, eucalyptus leaves are used for various pharmacological activities because they contain phenolic compounds. This study aims to detect phytochemical compounds and test the antioxidant activity of Eucalyptus pellita leaf extract. The dry powder of E. pellita leaves (1900 g) was macerated first with methanol solvent. The concentrated methanol extract was then subjected to partition extraction with n - hexane solvent. The methanol layer was concentrated and then partitioned with ethyl acetate solvent. Methanol extract was obtained as much as 176.75 g (9,30%), n-hexane extract 13.77 g (0.72%), and ethyl acetate extract 27.93g (1.47%). The three extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening, methanol extract and ethyl acetate extract were positive for flavonoids. These three extracts did not contain alkaloids but were positive for tannins and saponins. Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH (1,1 diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method with UV-vis spectrophotometer (max wavelength 517 nm). Sample concentration variations were 12.5; 25; 50; 100; and 200 ppm. Ethyl acetate extract, methanol extract and n - hexane extract have antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 6.811; 17.923; and 31.109 µg/mL, respectively. This shows that E. pellita leaf extract has very strong antioxidant activity and ethyl acetate extract has more antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Edible film can be used to package food well and improve the condition of the food, but damage to food ingredients can also occur due to bacteria, so chitosan-nisin is added as an antibacterial agent. In this research, Edible Film was made by adding 1,2,3,4 g of nisin to a 1% (w/v) chitosan solution to obtain four antibacterial agent solutions, namely 1.0% chitosan and chitosan-nisin: 0.1; 0.2; 0.3 and 0.4% (w/v), then mixed with distilled water, phosphate starch of yellow ivory coconut shoots, and sorbitol, then stirred with a magnetic stirrer, molded and dried in an oven and then tested for the antibacterial properties of the Edible film. The research results showed that Edible Film containing chitosan-nisin solution was the most potent antibacterial in inhibiting 1% chitosan solution with 0.4% nisin with the inhibition zone for each bacterium ranging between 29.9 mm, 30.6 mm. and 28.2 mm. Antibacterial activity increased with increasing concentration of chitosan-nisin solution.

Abstract

Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw. is traditionally used in medicine and is thought to be influenced by the presence of secondary metabolites, especially phenolic compounds and flavonoids. However, identifying the phytochemical compounds of Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw. plants, especially on the pods, are less discussed. Here, we propose research on the identification of secondary metabolite compounds of pod-purified extract from Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw. using phytochemical screening and also the determination of total phenolic and total flavonoid content. The extraction of Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw. pods were processed by maceration and fractionation methods to obtain the purified extract. Total phenolic contents were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Meanwhile, total flavonoid contents were determined using the AlCl3 method. The result showed that the purified extract of Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw. pods contained phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins. The total phenolic and total flavonoid content in the pod purified extract were 326.038 mg GAE/g extract and 290.026 mg QE/g extract, respectively.

Abstract

Referring to Ministerial Regulation of PAN-RB No. 16 of 2009 on Teacher Functional Status and Credit Score, it is clearly mentioned that one of the key components to apply teacher promotion is scientific writing (KTI). However, in fact, it was found that many teachers were independently constrained, especially in Sibolga City. As a result, the chance to get a higher rank and to be placed would be hampered. In addition, even some teachers are caught up in taking shortcuts by using the third part services to prepare their scientific writing, which of course, are not acceptable in publication ethics and academic values. In line with the results of preliminary observations made by the team, it was noticed that the teachers writing ability can be improved by providing them writing coaching class, including explanations and even training materials that need to be used in scientific writing. This writing coaching class is intended to provide teachers an opportunity to develop their skills, especially skill to write down scientific papers. Writing coaching class will be done by encouraging teachers to compose their ideas, formulating their problems, obtaining references sources, providing consultation rooms, implementing ethics and scientific publishing regulation, and selecting places where scientific papers will be published.

Abstract

Tamora Catfish Company as a Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (UMKM) which one of the Universitas Sumatera Utara community service partners, used a simple microbubble technology system to increase the dissolved oxygen content in pond water in order to anticipate of the large number of die fish because of the polluted pond water, which impacted in reducing the amount of oxygen. Biofloc application was observed decreasing the ammonia content and generating natural feed. This was analyze by the team that already implemented this simple technology in the first year observation which found its successfully reduce fish mortality and increase the number of catfish. However, the catfish food is expensive because it is depend on pellet feed, so the production process costs are very high. Via a multi-year system, community service team utilizes conventional market waste as a feed in order to replace the use of costly pellet feed. The solution was starting from processing conventional market waste such as vegetables waste. It was considered because it is cheap and it needs simple machine technology to produce the feed. The machine will construct by copper and mixer in order to produce feed that suitable for catfish food. Furthermore, it also impacted to make conventional market cleaner from waste since partners collect and process the waste directly.
