Abstract

One of the most important works in Qur’anic exegesis that employs a thematic approach is Tafsîr Nafahât al-Qur’ân Uslûb Jadîd fî al-Tafsîr al-Maudlû’î li al-Qur’ân al-Karîm, authored by Nâsher Makârem al-Syîrâzî. The study seeks to elucidate the methodology of exegesis employed in the work. Thematic approach of the Qur’an (tafsir al-maudlû’î) has developed significantly and showed diverse models in terms of the pattern of interpretation and theme. The author of the work, al-Syîrâzî, offers a new approach in thematic exegesis, which significantly differs from that introduced by al- Farmâwî, whose model of interpretation has so far dominated the field. Al-Syîrâzî thus opens pathways for reform of Qur’anic exegesis. His approach is built on the Syi’i theological doctrine of the five principles, namely knowing God and Oneness of God, Prophethood, Leadership, Eschatology and Justice. The adoption of these principles in the work of al-Syîrâzî has created a distinctive nuance of Qur’anic exegesis, which is rational and comprehensive.

Abstract

Abstract Many researchers have conducted studies on Hamka. However, studies on the rationalization of the interpretation of verses about Heaven and tracing the causes of the rationalization of performance have yet to be carried out. Therefore, the researcher was interested in conducting this study further. The type of this research is library research with a descriptive-analytical method. The genealogical theory of Michel Foucault explains the genealogy of Hamka's interpretation of thought. The conclusion of this article explains that, Firstly, Hamka attempts to make a rational and contextual interpretation of the verses describing Heaven. With the method of sensible and contextual performance, the metaphysical and abstract nature of Heaven becomes easily understood by readers (society), moreover explained by Hamka in simple language and explanation. Secondly, Hamka's rationalist thinking and contextual typology of description were influenced by several factors, including his life experience as a preacher, writer, organization, and his teachers. Thirdly, Hamka's interpretation of the verses about Heaven accommodates educational values between humans and God and also among humans.

Abstract

This article analyzes the Quranic Hermeneutics according to Nâser Makârem Shîrâzî concerning al-Mahdi theme in al-Amthal Tafseer. He interpreted al-Mahdi’s verses and diverted them to another meaning beyond the text. It is a forced interpretation to fit the desired theme, that Al-Râzî cannot justify, even for a religion’s ideology. A descriptive analytical method using hermeneutic approach on Q.S. al-Anbiya’ [21]:105 is implemented. This approach is applied by textually interpreting the verse followed by an in-depth discussion using ijtihad to justify Shîrâzî’s ideology. Hence, his Quranic Hermeneutics, as associated with Imam al-Mahdi, accommodates two meanings. First, it interprets the Quranic verses textually based on the linguistic principles where no single verse discusses al-Mahdi. Second, conducting an interpretation ijtihad on the verses, referring to the narration of ahl-bayt. He constructs his argument to justify God’s promise regarding the advent of al-Mahdi. Through these steps, he conveys that every Quranic verse contains exoteric (zâhir) and esoteric (bât{in) meanings. Q.S. al-Anbiyâ’ [21]:105 inspires him to perform ta’wîl ijtihadî. The word Zabûr in this verse is confirmed to be the Mazmur verses containing God’s promise, that He will bequeath the earth to the devout people, and tells their characteristics, which are similar to Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntazar’s.

Abstract

The interpretations of Q.S. al-Mâidah [5]:6 by Makârim Shirazî and Țabâțabâ’î focus on the meaning and practical implication of wudu, particularly concerning the word ‘arjulakum’ which holds two possible meanings based on different qirâ’ah. These differences generate various understandings and be distinguishing factors among Islamic mazhabs. One of them is Shia which considers the recitation a key basis for performing five obligatory prayers. This article presents and analyzes the interpretation of Q.S. al-Mâidah [5]:6 by Makârim Shirazî and Țabâțabâ’î’, two prominent exegetes in Shia tradition. The study adopts a qualitative approach using descriptive-analytical methods and is conducted through library research. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that both exegetes center their interpretation on the word ‘wa arjulakum’, read either with a fath{ah or a kasrah. Shirazî and Țabâțabâ’î’, along with majority of Shia scholars, affirm and favor the qirâ’ah with kasrah (wa arjulikum), implying the command to wipe (rather than wash) the feet during wudu. This distinction is also reflected in their explanations regarding the extent of the area to be wiped. This tafsir implication shows obedience to teaching conveyed by ahl al-bayt, and strengthens the main principal in Shia that Quranic interpretation is closely intertwined with hadiths originating from ahl al-bayt. The article contributes to a broader discourse on interpretive framework within Islamic traditions, highlighting Shia interpretations of qirâ’ah and narration which shape ritual practice. It also provides a detailed case study of how linguistic variation affects Islamic legal thought.
