Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the role of community identity on the behavior of online gamers. This research was conducted on the online gaming community X, which consists of students. The method used is qualitative phenomenology with interview data collection techniques. The research results show that the identity behavior of online gamers is determined by their community identity role. This community forms its own norms and values that are mutually agreed upon. The community also motivates the formation of gaming behavior and the intentions of each member’s behavior. The rational individual of action (gamer) is formed by a group of actions based on a community of utility, not an individual utility. Community members must force themselves to gain recognition of their group identity through many irrational acts of conformity.

Abstract

This study examines how children of Indonesian migrant workers construct their own social protection and navigate relationships within extended families. This study explores how social protection emerges through kinship negotiations based on children’s perceptions. When parents migrate for work, children face challenges and rely on extended family members for care. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study identifies patterns of kinship negotiations that shape social protection. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with children aged 7–15 in East Katol Village, Madura, Indonesia, who live with extended families due to parental migration. Findings reveal that children perceive social protection as central to familial relationships, engaging in negotiations embedded in kinship traditions. They extend protection beyond biological relatives, including non-relatives considered "like family." Protective interactions involve both family and non-family members, addressing care management and economic needs. This study provides insights into institutional social protection for children of migrant workers from social, psychological, and economic perspectives.  These findings collectively offer valuable theoritical insight into the dynamics of family kindship and negotiation in shaping social protection, while also providing practical implications for the development of more effective and inclusive social welfare policies.  This study emphasizes that the existing pattern of social protection through family kinship negotiation is not fully provided by the government.

Abstract

This paper investigates whether public transfers crowd-out inter-household transfers in Indonesia. Using household data from Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS-3 & IFLS-4), this study evaluates the impact of direct cash transfer programs (Bantuan Langsung Tunai, BLT) on inter-family transfer (i.e., monetary transfer from parents, siblings, child, and other family members who do not live co-residently). The results indicate that, in general, the crowding-out effect is relatively small. This effect is statistically significant only in urban households but not rural ones. This finding suggests that expanding public transfer under formal social security programs to cover poor households does not significantly reduce the existence of informal transfers. Further, public transfers potentially improve the distribution of household income.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how families understand and organize their work in agriculture in the midst of modern production challenges and changing agricultural practices, specifically in Madura, Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative research methodology with a phenomenological approach. This study analyzes the responses of informants to understand the lived experiences of farming families. Using the theory of symbolic interactionism, this research shows how farmers negotiate their work and family roles through the active construction and prioritization of shared meanings related to togetherness. These principles include a) a simple way of thinking, b) owning a traditional small farm, and c) not being primarily market oriented. Farmers foster a sense of work-related togetherness by forming strong family ties, resulting in a division of labor and wages based on family relationships. In the Madurese context, traditional agricultural practices are not only a means of livelihood, but also an integral part of the family's cultural identity and social structure. The findings of this study underscore the crucial role of shared meanings related to togetherness and family solidarity in sustaining traditional agriculture in the modern era. It also provides insights into the importance of family cohesion as a fundamental element of the resilience of traditional agricultural practices in Madura, Indonesia.
