Abstract

Abstract: This research is based on the low mathematical understanding ability of students in class X MIA 2 of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru. Based on test mathematical understanding ability for sequence and series lesson there are 5 of 19 students(26,31%) who achieved the mastery. The type of this research is classroom action research and the purpose of this research is to improve the learning process and increase mathematical understanding ability by implementing discovery learning. The subject of this research were the students in class X MIA 2 of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru at the second semester of academic year 2014/2015. Students in this research are 19 people, there are 9 boys and 10 girls. The instruments of data collection in this research were observation sheets and mathematical understanding ability tests. The observation sheets were analyzed in qualitative descriptive and mathematical understanding ability tests were analyzed in quantitative descriptive. Based on analyzed showed that there are: (1) the improvement of learning process after the implementation of discovery learning in mathematics in class X MIA 2 of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru by analyzed observation sheets; (2) increase the mathematical understanding ability of students with the score N-gain is 0,66(medium classification) in the first cycle and 0,73 (high classification) in the second cycle. The conclusion of this research is the implementation of discovery learning can improve the learning process and increase the mathematical understanding ability of students in class X MIA 2 of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru in the second semester of academic year 2014/2015 for opportunity lesson. Abstract

This article explores the skills and difficulties in critical thinking of junior Indonesian high school students in mathematics learning. Fifty students of grade IX who were purposive randomly selected from state junior secondary schools in Yogyakarta City were involved as the research subjects. The data were obtained from the test of mathematical critical thinking on the material of geometry. The test consisted of four items that describe each aspect of critical thinking skills, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. The analysis was done by showing the steps of the students ‘answers. The result indicated that the average of the aspects of mathematical critical thinking of students were on the high criteria with students’ greatest difficulties being in the analysis standard. Meanwhile, the average student success in the interpretation standard was 82%, the standard of the analysis was 46.25%, the evaluation standard was 78.25%, and the inference standard was 77%. Furthermore, from the results of the sample students’ exploration answers, it is expected that future teaching should not only focus on fluency in calculation but also on training the students in how to explain the solution steps of the problem solving process as this is important part in critical thinking.

Abstract

Innovative and engaging learning media are needed to overcome elementary school students' low interest and difficulty in understanding basic math operations. Therefore, this study aims to develop and test the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of educational game-based math learning media in understanding basic math calculation operations called Astromath. This media is designed to assist elementary school students in understanding mathematical concepts more enjoyably and interactively. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Two material experts validated with a result of 85.83% (very valid category) and two media experts with a result of 90% (very valid category). The practicality test was conducted on two teachers and four first-grade elementary school students. The results of the teachers' assessments showed an average score percentage of 84.37%, categorized as very practical. In comparison, the students' practicality test results obtained an average percentage of 91.1%, which also fell into the very practical category. Furthermore, the pre-test and post-test results demonstrated a significant increase in students' understanding after using Astromath. Therefore, Astromath is declared effective, practical, and suitable for use as an alternative interactive and enjoyable learning media in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to develop PISA model math questions on Change and Relationship content that are valid, practical, and potentially effective to improve students' reasoning and mathematical literacy skills. The method used is design research type development studies, which consists of preliminary and formative evaluation stages. The instrument was developed through a series of evaluation stages, namely self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, and small group. The research subjects were VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Indralaya. The questions developed included six items with difficulty levels from level 1 to level 6 and varied contexts (personal, general, and scientific). Based on the analysis of student answers, it is obtained that the questions developed by researchers can be said to be valid and practical, this is supported by the results of the validity, reliability, difficulty level, differentiating power tests quantitatively and declared practical based on the results of the analysis of student answers which show students have been able to understand the questions, the sentences used do not have double meanings and do not cause errors caused by the questions. Thus, the questions developed are declared feasible to be used to measure and train mathematical literacy and reasoning of junior high school students.
