Abstract

This research aims at observing the teachers’ professional competence by investigating the report texts written by three English teachers in a junior high school in terms of their schematic structures and linguistic features. To achieve this aim, a qualitative case study design involving analysis of English teachers’ report texts and interviews with these English teachers was employed in this research. The results of this research showed that generally the three English teachers have demonstrated sufficient ability in applying appropriate schematic structures and linguistic features relevant to the criteria of a report text. However, the results of this research also indicate that some improvements in understanding and writing a report text, especially in terms of schematic structure, linguistic features, and theme progressions, are needed to enhance the teachers’ subject matter content knowledge about report text.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected educational practices worldwide, including English language teaching and learning practices like teaching speaking courses. It has also shifted face-to-face learning into distance learning modes. Implementing e-portfolios in assessing students' speaking performance seems to be an alternative as this technique could be implemented fully online. However, how well e-portfolios facilitate students' learning engagement in speaking courses, especially during online learning, has been little documented. Thus, this study aims to explore the students' learning engagement and the challenges of implementing e-portfolios in an online speaking course. Using a single case study in an English Language Department at a public education university in Indonesia, the study involved ten participants selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from various resources, such as phone interviews, videos, and reflection journals, as data/source triangulation. The data were then analyzed using a theoretical thematic analysis technique. The findings revealed that the participants had active participation and showed almost similar engagements in cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains during the online speaking course. However, the students also faced several challenges that inevitably affected their feelings. Few implications are also discussed pertaining to conduct English language teaching practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Teaching practicum is believed to be a program crucial for pre-service teachers to gain their teacher professional identity (TPI). The pre-service teachers (PST) who are able to fit the context and be reflective to cope with challenges in the program are believed to have the sense of TPI. Hence, a PST o pre-service teachers is expected to have deeper focus of reflection after experiencing teaching practicum. One of the tools to identify the TPI among PSTs is Onion Model, the model containing the five phases of structured reflection. Even though there are a large number of researches that examine the reflection of teaching practicum through the eyes of PSTs using a number of different tools, few are concerned with the focus of PST’s reflection to determine their TPI. This research employed case study and Onion Model as the tool of analysis, the study scrutinized the TPI among six PSTs who possess different intentions in joining the teacher college. The finding showed that, as a training session, teaching practicum is able to sharpen the TPI among PSTs. However, it cannot change those with multiple identities and fixed personalities who may think that conflicts in identities can lead to diminished well-being.Keywords: pre-service teacher; teacher professional identity; teaching practicum.

Abstract

Abstract: This research portrays the possibility of the computer used in the EFL classrooms, particularly in senior high school which focuses on the students’ and teachers’ perception on the use of computer in EFL classroom. The data from interview were transcribed and used to support the data from questionnaire. As an alternative learning device, computer helped the students to reach their goals in learning English, i.e.: the limited mastery of  vocabulary, the lack of tenses  knowledge, focused on speaking and listening, the learning program was too difficult to follow, no speech media (like microphone or headset), no equal chance in using computer because they had to share one computer with the whole class. For teacher, such strategy gave a different experience of way of teaching, a more creative method and material, a fun learning for the students, and many exposures of communicative dialogue.  Moreover, using computer in EFL classroom provided with some difficulties associated with the EFL situation, such as a large class sizes and mixed ability classrooms. Keywords:  Computer, Perception,  EFL Classroom

Abstract

The study of extensive listening (EL) is a comparatively new field in comparison to its peer, extensive reading (ER). Extensive listening itself can be defined as an engaging and enjoyable listening activity that is beneficial in increasing one’s listening comprehension. Although there have been extensive studies in regards to the field of listening in general, the field of extensive listening receives relatively little attention. This study aims to uncover the difficulties encountered by EFL students in their extensive listening activities, and to contribute itself to the present gap of studies concerning extensive listening, specifically difficulties encountered in it. This study involves twenty-three EFL students under the class of listening for General Communication 1, and conducts a thematic analysis on the participants’ questionnaire and interview responses. The findings showed that the difficulties encountered by the participants in their extensive listening activities can be divided into three major categories, namely comprehension difficulties, technical difficulties, and motivational difficulties.

Abstract

This study employed classroom action research and was conducted in two cycles. The main data were students’ written texts taken from the first cycle and the second cycle, and the teacher’s field notes. The texts were analyzed by examining the schematic structure and the linguistic features of an analytical exposition text. To measure students’ critical thinking, the texts were examined using the Critical Thinking Value Rubric developed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU). The findings showed that there are positive implications for the application of high-level questioning in students’ critical thinking skills. Furthermore, in comparison between the data gained in the first cycle and the second cycle, it shows that after the implementation of high-level questioning there are some improvements in all aspects of the critical thinking criteria such as issue, evidence, the influence of context, and conclusion based on the value rubric. Although there are some improvements, in terms of delivering the issue, and showing evidence, the students still have difficulties in explaining and elaborating their ideas clearly. Keywords: analytical exposition text; critical thinking; high-level questioning.

Abstract

Podcasts and TED Talks are currently the most widely used resources to facilitate extensive listening activities. Students can benefit greatly from the scaffolding provided by podcasts/TED Talks as they practise extensive listening. In light of the demographics of Indonesian EFL students, this article aims to perform a qualitative analysis of EFL students' perceptions on the usage of podcasts/TED Talks as resources for their extensive listening activities. The primary information of the analysis comes from a post-course reflection questionnaire that was given out. The experiences that the students had during the course are the main focus of this reflective questionnaire. Five of the 23 students were picked for an interview to further discuss their questionnaire responses. The findings of the study revealed that students have largely positive views of using podcasts/TED Talks inside and outside the classroom. The students perceived that listening to podcasts/TED Talks gives them freedom of choosing the topics, flexibility in strengthening their listening skills, and motivation to learn more about listening. Keywords: extensive listening; podcast; TED Talks

Abstract

As assessment becomes more important in education, teachers must be advanced in both assessment and teaching course materials. The most recent way of assessing the performance of students in listening classrooms is value-added assessment using Google Sites as e-portfolios, one of among the strongest instruments used to assess the efficacy of teachers as well as recognise growth in students. Nonetheless, the use of e-portfolios in EFL students' listening classrooms and how it influences their learning enjoyment remains undetermined due to neither researchers nor students have addressed these issues in depth, and studies on using Google Sites as an e-portfolio-based assessment for teaching listening comprehensions have also been underutilised. Thus, this research aims to gain insight towards EFL students' views on using Google Sites as an e-portfolio-based value-added assessment tool in listening classrooms. It made use of a qualitative case study and included second-year university students. Students' course reflections and semi-structured interviews were both utilised to collect data, which was thereafter analysed qualitatively using coding and thematic analysis. The results of the study revealed that creating e-portfolios with Google Sites proves helpful in assessing students' learning achievement, tracking and measuring students' progress, and diagnosing deficiencies that need to be addressed. This study renders a recommendation for the use of other well-developed assessment tools in future studies.
