Abstract

There are some problems commonly faced by a translator, one of them is culture. This problem usually emerges when translating literary works. So far, many of the researches mostly use texts in which English becomes the source language and only a few takes English as the target language. This research attempts to investigate the challenges in translating Indonesian text into English especially idiomatic expression. 20 juniors in tertiary level education got involved in this research. They were asked to translate a novel from Andrea Hirata entitled Laskar Pelangi. The investigation on the products of their translations revealed that the students encountered some problems concerning accuracy, readability and acceptability. The result from interview showed that the students difficulties arose from students’ lack of understanding of target language grammatical rules, and inability to find a target language equivalent are the main reasons of the student’s difficulties. So as to the strategies to deal with these difficulties, the students employed some strategies such as consulting dictionaries, paraphrasing, and using word-for-word and literal translation. Such strategies seemed to be in adequately cope with the cultural issue, so it is suggested that the students familiarize themselves with their own culture, and English culture by reading more books, and watching Indonesian as well as English series and films. Moreover, being familiar with the adopted strategies, the students can translate literary works more properly.

Abstract

Teaching practicum is believed to be a program crucial for pre-service teachers to gain their teacher professional identity (TPI). The pre-service teachers (PST) who are able to fit the context and be reflective to cope with challenges in the program are believed to have the sense of TPI. Hence, a PST o pre-service teachers is expected to have deeper focus of reflection after experiencing teaching practicum. One of the tools to identify the TPI among PSTs is Onion Model, the model containing the five phases of structured reflection. Even though there are a large number of researches that examine the reflection of teaching practicum through the eyes of PSTs using a number of different tools, few are concerned with the focus of PST’s reflection to determine their TPI. This research employed case study and Onion Model as the tool of analysis, the study scrutinized the TPI among six PSTs who possess different intentions in joining the teacher college. The finding showed that, as a training session, teaching practicum is able to sharpen the TPI among PSTs. However, it cannot change those with multiple identities and fixed personalities who may think that conflicts in identities can lead to diminished well-being.Keywords: pre-service teacher; teacher professional identity; teaching practicum.

Abstract

Curiosity has been identified as driving force in doing an inquiry and one most important spur to educational attainment. As 2013 curriculum emphasizes the implementation of Inquiry Based Learning, teachers as curriculum executors should stimulate their students’ curiosity. The study is aimed to investigate if Knowledge Building Discourse (KBD) is able to develop students’ curiosity. The study was conducted in one private university in Cimahi. 25 junior students participated in this research. The study can be included into Second/Foreign Language Classroom Research. Classroom Research was employed to reveal the strength of KBD by identifying the students’ and teacher’s interaction in the classroom discourse. The study utilized rank scale to analyze spoken discourse from Sinclair and Coulthard (1992). In addition, the questionnaires were used to highlight the students’ opinion towards KB. The result of the study shows that through KBD, the students are able to search and share information to the class rather than provide information to the class for the sake of answering the teacher’s elicitation. It means, the implementation of KBD in classroom can enhance students’ curiosity as KBD can produce discourse that allows students’ inquiry to take place. Eventually, KB can be applied in 2013 curriculum which highlights Inquiry Based Learning in its teaching learning process.

WIB offers the sense of achievement among its participants, but competitive atmosphere is hardly to find among them. This research tries to analyze the fallacies being used in WIB and figure out how such fallacies can encourage people to think critically. The research employs descriptive research design as it simply attempts to determine, describe or identify phenomena. 6 WIB from September through December were randomly selected as the subject of the research. The result shows that WIB demonstrates the use of fallacies of relevance but it avoids using argumentum ad hominem that contains personal attack. WIB may encourage the audiences and participants to think critically as fallacious arguments offered make the audiences work hard to think any possible implicatures.
