Abstract

Srn+1TinO3n+1 (n = 1, 2,...n)Ruddlesden-Popper phase is a metal oxide compound with a layered structure consisting of SrTiO3 perovskite layers and strontium oxide (SrO) layers, thus this material has a potential as termoeletrik compounds that could be developed as an alternative material for renewable energy. In this study, we examine one of the 3 parameters of termoelectric properties, namely the electrical conductivity. Srn+1TinO3n+1 (n = 1 and 2)Ruddlesden-Popper phases were synthesized using molten salt method. The synthesis was carried out at 950 °C for 10 hours with a ratio of precursor and salt were 1: 0.5. Structural analysis by X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) confirmed that all synthesized compounds formed Srn+1TinO3n+1 (n = 1, and 2) Ruddlesden-Popper phase with the characteristic peaks at 2q = 31o, 32o, and 46o. The morphology analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) showed that the particles have plate-shaped with crystallites size were 20 nm. The electrical properties were measured using LCR meter with the highest electrical conductivity of 2.25x10-7 S / cm which showed the semiconductors behaviour.

Abstract

In this research, undoped-Sr2TiO4 and codoped-Sr2TiO4 Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase compounds have been synthesized with mole variations of Sr:Ti and dopants. Double substitution with Sm3+ for Sr2+ sites and Nb5+ for Ti4+ sites forming Sr2-xSmxTi1-yNbyO4 (x = 0.0125; 0.025; 0.05; 0.1 and y = 0.0125) aimed to increase the number of electrons carrier, so that the electrical conductivity enhanced. The XRD patterns showed that the highest purity of prepared Sr2TiO4 RP phase sample was obtained at the mole ratio of Sr:Ti of 2:1 with specific peaks at 2θ: 31.35°, 46.73°, and 57.33°. Then, this mole ratio was used to prepare the codoped-samples, and the XRD patterns showed the Sr1.95Sm0.05Ti0.9875Nb0.0125O4 sample has the highest purity. SEM images showed that the undoped-Sr2TiO4 and codoped-Sr2TiO4 samples have a plate-like particles with micrometer size. The electrical conductivity of Sr1.95Sm0.05Ti0.9875Nb0.0125O4 sample was measured to be a 17-fold increase compared to that of undoped-Sr2TiO4 sample.

Abstract

Bioplastics are bio-based plastics from natural resources, made to replace conventional plastics. The utilization of biopolymers in bioplastics provide a faster degradation compared to petroleum-based plastics. Starch-based bioplastic from mixing Durio zibethinus Murr starch and glycerol as plasticizer have been conducted. In this research, the concentration of glycerol has been varied to study the effect on starch-based bioplastics mechanical properties. The tensile strength for Durio zibethinus Murr starch-based bioplastic with 20% glycerol was 50.28 MPa with 13.3% elongation. The functional group found on the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra indicated the presence of O-H stretch, C-H stretch, C=O stretch, and C-O stretch which stated the formation of bioplastic. The image results gained from scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the morphology surface of bioplastic was less homogenous and rough. The soil burial test for biodegradability showed Durio zibethinus Murr starch-based bioplastic achieved 38.9% weight loss in a 5-day observation.

Abstract

Thermoelectrics (TE), enabling the conversion of heat energy into electricity directly, provide the opportunity as alternative energy for conventional power generator with high efficiency. To date, bulk SrTiO3 nanocubes is the most promising oxide-based TE materials candidate. The nanoarchitecture of 3-dimensional SrTiO3 nanocubes (3D-STO) is the main target in realizing high performance TE materials with high ZT value comparable to commercially available telluride-based compound. The proper synthesis method is needed to form SrTiO3 with uniform nano-sized cubic particles. Liquid synthesis technique namely hydrothermal and solvothermal, succeeded in forming 20 nm of SrTiO3 nanocubes with high crystallinity and homogeneous morphology

Abstract

The synthesis of SrTiO3 nanocubes have been carried out by solvothermal process using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as capping agent to control the particles morphology. The condition of the synthesis was obtained at 160 ºC for 24 hours with molar ratio of SrTiO3 and capping agent was 1 : 1. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows that SrTiO3 adopts a perovskite structure with a higher intensity of 110 at 2q:32.33º and the crystallite size calculated from FWHM was found to be 41 nm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum shows a shift in particular absorption band attributed the interaction between SrTiO3 particles surface and the head group of CTAB molecules. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows the cubic-like particles of SrTiO3, this indicatesthat CTAB successfully functions as capping agent on the synthesis of SrTiO3.

Abstract

The tropical bamboo has been widely used in modern society as a potential material for various applications. It is well known that bamboo has low durability due to its hydrophilic properties. To overcome this problem, the superhydrophobic surface on Indonesian bamboo timber had been successfully fabricated via hydrothermal deposition of an anatase TiO2 and solution immersion of octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS), which exhibited a maximum water contact angle (WCA) of 155°. The as-fabricated superhydrophobic bamboo timber not only showed high mechanical resistance against the abrasion of SiC sandpaper but had also been proven to possess high chemical stability after immersion in acidic and basic aqueous solutions. Moreover, the superhydrophobic bamboo timber also demonstrated excellent self-cleaning and flame-resistance properties, in comparison to pure bamboo timber. It is believed that the strategy offered in this study can increase the utilization of bamboo timber for various purposes, especially as a self-cleaning material.

Abstract

A heterogeneous catalyst is one type of catalyst which is very effective for biodiesel production; thus, in this study, a novel heterogeneous bifunctional catalyst was prepared by kaolinite clay obtained from Padang of West Sumatera and impregnated with graphene oxide and potassium hydroxide (KOH) for the simultaneous esterification and transesterification reactions of palm oil into biodiesel. For comparison, two other catalysts were also prepared. The first catalyst was the same clay which was heated at 450ºC for 4 hours, and the second catalyst was the same clay which was impregnated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) only. The three catalysts were characterized using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). XRF analysis showed that the clay sample’s main composition consisted of 54% silica, 35% alumina, and 7% hematite. The XRD analysis results showed that the most dominant crystal composition was quartz, kaolinite, and hematite. The analysis results using FTIR showed a change in intensity and shift in wave numbers indicating a cation exchange. The catalytic activity test was carried out with a ratio of oil and methanol 1:6, catalyst amount 5%, 60ºC reaction temperature, and 4 hours of reaction time. The results showed that the catalytic activity of clays impregnated with graphene oxide and potassium hydroxide was better with a yield of 58% compared to clays without impregnation and other clays that were only impregnated with KOH under the yields of 0.8% and 0.4%, respectively
