Abstract

Antiretroviral drug discovery has encouraged a revolution in the care of people living with HIV, although it has not been able to cure diseases and to increase the challenge in terms of drug side effects. Side effects of antiretroviral drugs are fairly common occurrences in HIV patients and generally occur within the first three months after initiation of antiretroviral therapy, although long-term side effects are also often found afterwards. This study aims to evaluate the number of CD4 T-cells in patients with AIDS before and after getting on ARV therapy and side effects arising during the taking of ARVs. Samples were collected from 10 patients infected by HIV/AIDS in a clinic in Surabaya. This study is an analytical survey. Data collection was conducted using secondary data obtained from the medical record card status on HIV paients in a clinic in Surabaya. Data results showed that the side effects that often occur in people with AIDS are appetite loss (90%), headache (80%), insomnia (80%) and nausea (70%). While many combinations of antiretroviral drugs have side effects such as a combination of AZT +3 TC + EFV, d4T +3 TC + followed by EFV and AZT +3 TC + NVP. The present study shows that combination antiretroviral therapy gives good results to the increased number of CD4 T-cellsin patients living with HIV, as shown by the tendency of an increase in the number of CD4 T-cells in 8 out of 10 AIDS patients who received a antiretroviral therapy.

Abstract

The rapid epidemic growth of HIV is continuing in Indonesia. There are some factors which have influenced the spreading of this epidemic in Indonesia, such as the poor awareness to avoid unsafe free sex attitude and the sharing of needles and syringes among intravenous drug users (IDUs). The sexual transmission of HIV has also apparently increased in Tulungagung. Commercial sex workers play a significant role in the spread of HIV in Tulungagung. People in Tulungagung have worked at other countries as Indonesian migrants. This condition can cause the increase number of HIV-1 case and the possibility of genetic variation (subtype) HIV-1 in Tulungagung. This research is aimed to analyze the subtype and to determine estimation of transmission mode on infected patient of HIV-1 and AIDS who came to Seruni clinic Dr. Iskak hospital in Tulungagung. 40 HIV?AIDSpatients were interviewed to determine the subtype and the transmission mode. The results showed that 14 of 40 plasma samples (35%) were successfully to amplified and sequenced. OverallCRF01-AE wereidentified as predominant subtype among HIV/AIDS patients in Tulungagung. Based on individual information, 31 of 40 subjects (77%) were heterosexual transmission.

Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 continues to be a global problem. Surabaya is among the cities hit by COVID-19. Lack of information and awareness of COVID-19 and its vaccination in teenagers might have impacted their preventative behavior and belief in COVID-19 vaccination. This study examined differences in high school students' understanding of COVID-19 and its vaccination before and after the intervention. Methods: The quasi-experimental design was utilized in this study, which took place between September and December of 2021. PowerPoint materials (webinar), videos, and pocketbooks about COVID-19 and its vaccination were the educational community initiatives. Students in grades 10-12 at SMA 4 Muhammadiyah Surabaya, MA Mamba'ul Hisan Gresik, and SMA Negeri 1 Sidoarjo participated in the study, and 160 students completed the pre-test and post-test. The study variables were knowledge, student characteristics (gender, age, class, and school origin), and parental characteristics (age, education, and occupation). The paired t-test was used to evaluate the univariable and bivariable data. Results: With an average pre-test value of 7.09 and a post-test value of 7.94, there was a difference of high school students' understanding of COVID-19 before and after the intervention (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was also a difference of knowledge about COVID-19 vaccination (p < 0.001), with an average pre-test value of 5.87 and a post-test value of 7.03. Conclusion: There are considerable differences in students' knowledge of COVID-19 disease and its vaccination before and after the intervention. In order to prevent COVID-19, community service activities involving the distribution of information (webinars), videos, and pocketbooks could help them gain more knowledge.

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 continues to mutate, with some forming new, relatively more dangerous variants. Surabaya Raya including Surabaya, Sidoarjo, and Gresik is the most affected areas by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in East Java Province. One of the reasons for the increase in COVID-19 cases is due to inappropriate COVID-19 prevention behavior. Knowledge and attitudes are important factors that can influence a person's behavior. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19 prevention behavior in high school students. This type of research used analytic observational with a cross-sectional design. The subjects in this study were 176 students from SMA 4 Muhammadiyah Surabaya, SMA Negeri 1 Sidoarjo, and MA Mamba'ul Hisan Gresik who had filled in the questionnaire. The dependent variable in this study is COVID-19 prevention behavior. The independent variables in this study included gender, history of being infected with COVID-19, knowledge, and attitudes. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. The variables studied that are related to COVID-19 prevention behavior in high school students are knowledge (p = 0.027; PR = 0.48) and attitudes (p = 0.000; PR = 6.83). The variables studied that did not have a relationship were gender (p = 0.537) and a history of being infected with COVID-19 (p = 0.974). Knowledge and attitudes are significantly related to COVID-19 prevention behavior, but not to gender and history of COVID-19 disease. Community service is one of the important efforts in improving the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of high school students. Keywords: COVID-19, Knowledge, Attitude, Behavior.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection remains a global health concern characterized by the reduction of CD4 lymphocyte cells and weakened immune systems. Knowing the CD4 count and the factors affecting it is crucial for assessing the immune status of HIV patients. Hematological markers, including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), have been recognized as prognostic tools that were associated with CD4 Count. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of NLR and PLR on CD4 count among people living with HIV (PLHIV). This study used analytic observational method with a cross-sectional on HIV-positive individuals who were treated at Moewardi Hospital, Surakarta, Indonesia. The Chi-Square and Pearson correlation tests were performed to identify the correlation between variables and the linear regression test was done to investigate the association between NLR and PLR with CD4 count. A total of 80 PLHIV were identified for this study, with the median CD4 count of 103 cells/mm3. NLR and PLR were found to be 3.06 and 181.03, respectively. This study found that opportunistic infection, duration on ARV treatment, body mass index, total lymphocyte count, and hemoglobin were significantly associated with CD4 count. The Pearson correlation test revealed a strong correlation between NLR and PLR to CD4 count. Linear regression analyses showed that NLR and PLR could predict the CD4 count. These findings indicate that NLR and PLR could serve as alternative prognostic parameters for monitoring treatment outcomes in PLHIV, particularly in health facilities where access to CD4 count testing is limited.
