Abstract

This paper explores how the preservation of socioemotional wealth can be manifested in the control and corporate governance of Malaysian Chinese firms. Using panel data from the Industrial Products index of the Bursa Malaysia (the Malaysian stock exchange) during 2003-2006, we show that the ingrained ‘life-raft values’ among overseas Chinese entrepreneurs can be associated with the preservation of their socioemotional wealth, and thus they prioritize control over their firms. Additionally, we confirm the monitoring role of non-dominant large shareholders in reducing the families’ influence in managing and enhancing their firms’ performance. Specifically, control contestability exercised by the non-dominant large shareholders mediates the relationship between a family’s involvement in management and their firm’s performance.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing individuals to be involved in informal sectors in Indonesia. The factors include gender, marital status, age, education, migration, employment type, working hours, and income. Analyzing SAKERNAS 2020 data released by BPS using logistic regression method, this study found that all these factors have a significant influence on the employment sector (both informal and formal). The subjects’ characteristics such as being female, having particular marital status, aged over 40, educated at the senior high school level or lower, non-migrant status, involvement in agricultural business, working more than 8 hours a day, and earning a monthly income of 5 million rupiah, were found to influence individual preference of working in informal sectors. The study showed inequalities and gaps among individuals working in informal sectors in Indonesia, highlighting the need for the policymakers’ intervention to provide stimuli that can improve the welfare of informal economic actors and provide them with social protection.

Abstract

The informal sector in the labor market is often regarded as filled with low-quality, low-productivity, low-wage jobs. However, in Indonesia, the informal sector is important in absorbing more than half of the total workforce and providing subsistence wages for those not absorbed in the formal labor market. This study used SUSENAS microdata to determine the workforce determinants in working in the formal and informal sectors. The study results show that higher education, male gender, and living in an urban area increased one's chances of working in the formal sector. This study also found an inverted u-shaped curve on age, where a person's tendency to work in the formal sector would increase at the beginning of their productive age and decrease after entering the age of 27. Marital status in this study increased opportunities to work in the informal sector. This research may use to improve the labor policy and improve the job opportunity in both formal and informal sector.

Abstract

The advancement of information and communication technology has brought major changes in the world of education, including the use of learning resources. However, globalization also has the potential to distance students from local cultural values. This study aims to explore the development of learning resources based on Kaili local culture in learning in grade IV of Elementary School using naturalistic qualitative methods. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies with research subjects consisting of teachers, students, principals, and cultural figures at elementary school Sunju. The results of the study indicate that the learning resources used still do not accommodate local culture, while students are more familiar with foreign cultures than Kaili culture. Teachers have difficulty integrating local culture due to limited teaching materials. The principal supports the development of learning resources based on local culture, but training is needed for teachers so that its implementation is more effective. These findings indicate that the development of learning resources based on local culture can enrich students' learning experiences and strengthen their cultural identity, although it still faces challenges in implementation. This study emphasizes the importance of the role of education in preserving local culture through the development of relevant and contextual learning resources.

Abstract

This research analyzes the role of economic institutions—reflected through interest rates, tax policies, and investment climate—in influencing domestic credit distribution in ASEAN-5 countries. Employing a descriptive quantitative approach, the study uses secondary data from the World Bank covering the period 2013–2022, focusing on Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Panel data regression is used to estimate the effects of institutional variables. The findings reveal that interest rates and the number of new business registrations—an indicator of investment climate—positively and significantly impact domestic credit distribution. Conversely, tax levels show a significant negative effect, indicating that lower tax burdens are associated with greater credit distribution. These results underscore the importance of institutional quality in shaping financial intermediation within ASEAN-5 economies and provide insights for policymaking to strengthen credit markets.

Abstract

The increasing use of social media platforms among students offers potential for both academic and personal information exchange. However, the factors influencing its adoption for learning by school students remain underexplored. This study aims to identify and rank the key factors that affect the use of social media for learning among primary school students. Utilizing the Delphi method, data were collected in two rounds from 30 expert participants, who were primary school teachers, using purposive sampling. In the first round, thematic analysis identified six key factors influencing social media adoption. In the second round, these factors were ranked in order of importance, with Kendall’s W of 0.364 and a p-value of 0.000 confirming consensus. In addition, an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) value of 0.923 indicated reliability. The top three factors identified were learning transformation, technology reform, and long-term prospects for students. The findings suggest that schools should prioritize these factors in strategic planning. Future research could expand this study to include private and international educators, and qualitative studies like tracer research could further enrich the understanding of social media’s role in learning.

Abstract

The masak lemak cili padi dish is closely associated with Negeri Sembilan. Migrants from Padang, Indonesia, known as the Minangkabau, introduced their cultural heritage to this Malaysian state through their traditional cuisine. The masak lemak cili padi dishes are renowned in Negeri Sembilan, attracting tourists and customers from various ethnic backgrounds. This study aims to apply the Delphi method, a structured communication technique that involves a panel of experts, to rank the nine types of masak lemak cili padi dishes at Restaurant X, the biggest restaurant in Negeri Sembilan that specialises in this cuisine. The Delphi method is chosen for its ability to reach consensus among a group of experts, in this case, 30 participating customers. Based on Kendall’s coefficient of concordance W=0.351 and p<0.001, the nine dishes’ ranking was deemed consistent. The study revealed that masak lemak cili padi using smoked beef, chicken, smoked duck, and crab were the most popular choices for the 30 participating customers. The least popular are gulai pucuk, smoked catfish, telur itik, fish/prawn and siput sedut. Restaurant X is recommended to focus more on the traditional masak lemak cili padi dishes, particularly smoked beef, chicken, and duck. The usage of customers instead of subject matter experts, coupled with the robustness in conducting the Delphi study to scientifically rank the masak lemak cili padi dishes, are the major contribution of this study.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the integration of digital literacy in e-LMS-based distance learning at university level in the 4.0 era. This research was conducted at the Open University involving 135 students. This research uses mixed methods. Data collection through interviews and questionnaires. The results show that students have basic skills in using digital technology for learning, especially in using social media platforms and applications such as Google Classroom and Zoom. However, students' abilities in creating digital content and critically evaluating information still need to be improved, such as distinguishing correct information from incorrect and modifying digital resources have not been mastered optimally.
