Abstract

This study aims to describe several aspects of Javanese tradition, Islamic values and modernity influencing young Javanese women in taking up trendy veils. This research is a qualitative study conducted on Javanese female students wearing trendy veils from four universities in Surakarta. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires and interviews in focus group discussion. The findings show some cultural values derived from Javanese tradition, Islam, and modernity influencing and determining the practice of wearing trendy veils among female Javanese Muslim students. From the perspective of modernity, it was found that the practice of trendy veiling among these female students is influenced by the idea of practicality, freedom and autonomy. While traditional Javanese values such as etiquette, relationships and honor also find its relevance to their practice of veiling, it is Islamic religious orientation, the intention for self-improvement based on sharia that becomes the determinant factor in the decision of taking up trendy veils.

Abstract

This research focuses on Joseph Conrad’s Almayer’s Folly  to explain the circumstance which leads to the rejection of Mrs. Almayer and Nina Almayer to embrace the dominant race and the reason why these characters choose to remain within ‘Othered’ identity. This study employs Ricoeur’s hermeneutics that applies two steps of reading: distantiation to obtain an objective understanding of the novel and an appropriation through putting the objective understanding of the novel in the socio-cultural context. This study attempts to offer the term “anti-mimicry”, borrowing Bhabha’s term’ to explain the subjectivity of the female character who stand out against the white domination to resist through savage and barbarous manners to mock the dominator, the white. Through the refusal to mimic, Conrad provides a space for Malay women consciousness to develop her subjectivity that could be construed as Conrad’s ambiguous perspective to white superiority in the colonialized era.

Abstract

Developing the observation of the intensity of students' engagement with digital texts, which tend to increase significantly during the pandemic Covid-19, this research raises questions on the cognitive poetics process and experiences in readers' engagement with digital fiction. Of such phenomenon, this research applies cognitive poetics, which refers to the appreciation of the texts experiencing artistic enjoyment and creativity. In the context of digital fiction, this research assumes that readers experience mental immersion and create some forms of transportation. Subsequently, this research studies the readers' immersion in narratives and identifies forms of transportation as a conceptual metaphor projected to different media. This research applies qualitative content analysis to the data obtained from a survey posted on social media. Data are analyzed based on the trend and generalized to identify the causal relationship between the act of reading, the sensory immersion, and the forms of transportation. Adopting cognitive psychology theory, this research argues that readers' immersion process in digital fiction is not holistic and stable. Instead, it is a situation creating different forms and intensities. The result shows that digital text variations and the freedom of expression provide a space for readers to project the conceptual metaphor into various forms of transportation, which can be supportive and persuasive.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the self-representation of sensuous female influencers in Indonesia, specifically a 20-year-old female Javanese influencer who lives in Surakarta, on Instagram, and how the influencer publicly presents herself in front of the audience. Relying on Goffman’s Dramaturgical approach, this study provides thorough insights into the frontstage and backstage behavior of the sensuous female influencer and the representation of the influencer on the frontstage. Employing Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic triadic model (1931), the data obtained from Instagram were analyzed by understanding the representamen, the interpretant, and the object of the data. Then, to gain a more detailed understanding, the data collected from in-depth interviews were also scrutinized. This study shows that there is an act of rebellion of being against society's norms of modesty as the influencer constantly acts in a sexualized manner in public and daily activity. While previous studies mostly examine the phenomenon of the sexualized manner of women in hyper-sexualized cultures/Western cultures, this study provides an understanding of the sexualized manner of a sensuous Javanese female influencer in the area where people do not find self-sexualization behavior as common or prevalent.

Abstract

It has been a formula in films, comics, animations, and games to narrate a protagonist who turns into an antagonist to offer an alternate narrative to enjoy. This good-to-evil and weak-to-strong transformation is followed by changes in the names of the characters. We argue that the name changes are marked by what we called as umbralatives, an augmentative marker to indicate that a character has undergone a nuance shift from light to dark and an increase in power. This study attempts to address this phenomenon by proving the existence of umbralatives, their typology, and functions. Applying Zwicky and Pullum’s expressive morphology, Dressler and Barbaresi’s morphopragmatics, and Reinhart’s gestalt perception of narrative texts, we attempt to prove the existence of umbralatives. Implementing Spradleyan analysis on a corpus of characters from seventy one titles of animations, comics, films, and games, it was revealed that umbralatives are classified into colorative, stative, referentive, inventive, and elliptive. These five umbralatives function as a narrative marker in animations, comics, and films and a ludic marker in games. This study discloses a new field of study on morphology with special emphasis over the combination of morphopragmatics and onomastics – umbralatives. The results of the study might also disclose further investigations over good-to-evil narratives which we call umbral narratives.

Abstract

This study arose from a premise that female digital immigrants are assumed to be more vulnerable to hoax news on social media and tend to disseminate them due to their “natural” tendency, whereas they have important roles as role models and educators for their children. The research investigates how Indonesian female digital immigrants identify hoax news and how they avoid hoax news on social media. Fifteen women aged between thirty and forty years old with various backgrounds of education and having been using social media were selected as the informants. The data were collected using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. By employing Critical Discourse Analysis the study reveals that in majority the informants indicate that they are quite careful in responding the news or information found on social media. Accordingly, not all female digital immigrants cannot be considered susceptible to hoax news and hoax news disseminator on social media.
