Abstract

DOI : 10.35990/mk.v4n4.p381-394

Abstract

DOI : 10.35990/mk.v4n2.p145-156

Abstract

DOI : 10.35990/mk.v4n4.p395-408

Abstract

Obesity is a multifactorial disease that occurs when there is an abnormal accumulation of body fat due to an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. The prevalence of Riset Kesehatan Dasar in 2018 showed that 21.8% of the Indonesian population over 18 years is obese. One of the diets recommended by European Association for the Study of Obesity Community for obesity is the Mediterranean diet. This study aims to determine the difference of adherence level in the Mediterranean diet to nutritional status, and muscle mass in obese patients. The method used in this study is analytic observational with prospective cohort observations. Subjects in this study were 37 obese patients who were monitored for diet four times in one month with food frequency questionnaire and checked for BMI, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and muscle mass at the end of the month. BMI and body fat percentage were analyzed using the Anova test while waist circumference and muscle mass data were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test. The level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet has been shown to significantly affect BMI (p=0.008), waist circumference (p=0.042), body fat percentage (p=0.014), and muscle mass (p=0.009) in obese patients. This associated with the composition of Mediterranean diet which affects increase in thermogenesis, fat oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and increases satiety for a longer period. The results of this study support the hypothesis that there is the difference of adherence to the Mediterranean diet to nutritional status and muscle mass in obese patients. Abstract

Inflammation is a natural defense response of the body when an infection occurs. However, excessive inflammatory reactions can be triggered by lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which are key immunogenic components of bacterial capsules or cell walls. These reactions can lead to harmful effects on the body. Black rice (Oryza sativa L. indica) is a natural source rich in phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant anthocyanins, which act as immunomodulators. This study aimed to investigate the effect of black rice ethanol extract as an anti-inflammatory agent on the proliferation of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) in the spleen of rats induced by lipopolysaccharides. The study involved 27 mice, which were given a 400 mg/kg BW dose of black rice ethanol extract for 14 days. Afterward, the rats were induced with 0.3 mg/kg BW LPS intraperitoneally 24 hours before euthanasia using CO2. The spleens were then collected to measure the size of the germinal center diameter. The results showed that the treatment group had a germinal center diameter of 1.311 ± 0.226 μm (p<0.05) when compared to the positive control group. The LPS administration in the control group resulted in the disorganization of the white pulp and a reduction in lymphocyte cells and PMN in the germinal center. In conclusion, black rice ethanol extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW has an effect on PMN proliferation, as indicated by changes in the morphology of the white pulp in the germinal center of the spleen in rats. Abstract

Infestation with the Sarcoptes scabies mite causes scabies, an infectious skin disease that is often found in densely populated areas. This disease is characterized by itching, especially at night, as well as the appearance of rashes and lesions on the skin. Scabies is an endemic public health problem that attacks groups of people with poor personal hygiene. This research aims to understand the experiences of scabies patients regarding their disease journey, including treatment and prevention efforts. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, and a total of seven participants from Cikatomas Health Center, Tasikmalaya Regency, were included. We collected data through in-depth interviews. From the research results, five themes emerged regarding the experiences of scabies patients in their disease journey: symptoms, risk factors, chain of transmission, treatment efforts, and prevention efforts. In conclusion, during the onset of symptoms, patients reported experiencing intense itching, particularly, in several areas of the body. The most prominent risk factors found in patients were poor personal hygiene and inadequate housing density. The chain of transmission occurred due to contact with other scabies patients, including a history of sharing beds in dormitories and using shared items. Patients sought treatment at health facilities, but did not receive treatment together with friends or other affected family members, thereby allowing the chain of transmission to continue. Prevention efforts have been made by improving personal hygiene. DOI : 10.35990/amhs.v3n1.p12-23 REFERENCES Sungkar S. Skabies: Etiologi, Patogenesis, Pemberantasan dan Pencegahan.
