Abstract

The phenomenon of open unemployment in Indonesia is an important issue that needs serious attention, especially when the economy is growing steadily. While economic growth should create more jobs, there are challenges such as a mismatch between the education graduates receive and the needs of the job market, as well as more investment going into sectors that do not absorb much labor. This study aims to understand the factors that influence the unemployment rate in Indonesia, by looking at the influence of economic factors such as economic growth, the number of college graduates, investment, population growth, and minimum wage. Using data from 2017 to 2023 across 34 provinces and the panel data analysis method, this study finds that economic growth and population growth have a significant effect on unemployment, while the number of college graduates, investment, and minimum wage show no significant effect. The findings suggest the importance of creating equitable economic growth and improving the matching of education with labor market needs.

Abstract

Aceh is a province in Indonesia with a Muslim-majority region and applies special autonomy and qanun, but there is a paradoxical phenomenon in this region where a significant increase in zakat distribution, economic growth, and education is actually followed by an increase in the number of poor people. This study aims to test and analyze the effect of zakat, economic growth and education on poverty rates in 23 districts / cities of Aceh Province in 2011-2021. The research method used in this study is using a descriptive quantitative approach using secondary data. The analysis technique uses panel data regression which includes cross section data (23 districts / cities) and time series data (2011-2021). Data obtained from the official websites of Baitul Mal Aceh and the Central Bureau of Statistics of Aceh Province. The results showed that zakat and education partially had a significant negative effect on the poverty rate in Aceh, this identified that zakat and education succeeded in reducing poverty in Aceh. However, it is different with economic growth where the results show that partially economic growth has a positive but insignificant effect on the poverty rate. This indicates that an increase in economic growth causes an increase in the poverty rate in Aceh. Simultaneously, zakat, economic growth and education variables together have a significant effect on poverty reduction in Aceh.

Abstract

Tourism is a rapidly developing industry in many countries. Tourism is a sector with the potential to drive the development of the national and regional economy, and it is also one of the key sectors contributing to the increase in PAD. West Kalimantan Province has tourism potential that needs to be explored, enabling the regional economy to develop rapidly. Using quantitative descriptive methods, analyzed with panel data regression. The results of this study indicate that the variables of the number of foreign tourists and hotel occupancy rates have a positive, yet insignificant, effect on regional original income. In contrast, the variable of gross regional domestic product has a positive and significant effect on regional original income. Simultaneously, the variables of the number of foreign tourists, hotel occupancy rates, and gross regional domestic product have a positive and significant effect on regional original income in West Kalimantan Province from 2014 to 2023. These findings can be used to support the formulation of regional economic policies related to the important role of the tourism sector in efforts to increase local revenue (PAD).

Abstract

Objective: As a developing country, Indonesia is still economically vulnerable. This study analyzes the influence of health complaints, school participation rate, per capita expenditure, General Allocation Fund, Special Allocation Fund, and open unemployment rate on poverty. Grounded in the Human Capital, Keynesian, Fiscal Federalism, and Malthusian Theory, the empirical study explains the socioeconomic and fiscal dimensions of poverty to evaluate the policy effectiveness in Indonesia. Design/Methods/Approach: This study employs panel data (2014-2023) from Statistics Indonesia and the Ministry of Finance, covering the ten poorest provinces. Multiple linear regression is the method employed by EViews 12 under a Random Effects model, because provincial differences are assumed to be random and uncorrelated with the independent variables. Findings: The results reveal that health complaints have a negative but insignificant effect on poverty. School participation rate and per capita expenditure significantly reduce poverty depth, reflecting the roles of human capital accumulation and household purchasing power in improving welfare. The General Allocation Fund exhibits a positive but insignificant effect, whereas the Special Allocation Fund significantly increases poverty, indicating misallocation and inefficiencies in fiscal implementation. The open unemployment rate has a positive and significant effect, as loss of income pushes households further below the poverty line. Originality/Value: This study offers novel value by focusing specifically on the ten provinces with the highest poverty depth, which is rarely examined in prior research. The study provides evidence that the determinants of poverty are not universal but vary across regional contexts. The findings extend existing literature by highlighting the role of fiscal governance quality, particularly the divergent effects of transfer funds. Practical/Policy implication: These findings provide strategies for poverty alleviation in the poorest regions, such as expanding equitable access to health and education services, strengthening employment programs, and improving the transparency and targeting of fiscal transfers.

Abstract

Income inequality across regions in Indonesia remains persistently high despite a stable national economy and ongoing fiscal reforms. This study examines disparities between Western and Eastern Indonesia by analyzing the roles of fiscal decentralization, economic growth, and unemployment from 2010 to 2022. Using a fixed effects model on 34 provinces, the analysis captures regional and temporal variations that shape inequality dynamics. The findings show that fiscal decentralization reduced inequality in Eastern Indonesia during 2010–2016 and in Western Indonesia during 2017–2022. Economic growth significantly increased inequality in Western Indonesia during 2010–2016, while unemployment reduced inequality in the same region and period. However, these effects weaken when control variables and time segmentation are introduced, indicating sensitivity to institutional and structural contexts. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of formulating fiscal policies tailored to regional characteristics, thereby strengthening the relevance of the theory of fiscal federalism and the kuznets hypothesis for future research aimed at addressing inequality in other developing countries. Keywords: Fiscal Decentralization; Economic Growth; Unemployment; Income Inequality.
