Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of phrases in writing descriptive texts produced by the tenth-grade students of SMK N 3 Medan, particularly Class X KI 3 of the Chemical Industry major. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of phrases used by the students and to determine the dominant type of phrase found in their descriptive writing. This research applied a qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected from students’ written descriptive texts. The technique of data analysis was based on Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of the study reveal that the students used several types of phrases in their descriptive texts, namely noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases. Among these types, noun phrases were dominantly used by the students in constructing descriptive texts. This indicates that students tend to focus on describing objects, people, and places by using noun-centered constructions. However, the use of other phrase types was relatively limited, which shows that students still lack syntactic variety in their writing. In conclusion, the use of phrases plays a crucial role in constructing clear and detailed descriptive texts. The dominance of noun phrases reflects the nature of descriptive writing, yet students need further guidance in using various phrase types to improve sentence complexity and writing quality. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers provide more focused instruction and practice on phrase structures to enhance students’ grammatical competence and writing skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze students’ difficulties in using the simple past tense in writing narrative texts at SMK Negeri 3 Medan. The research focused on identifying the types of grammatical errors and exploring the factors contributing to these difficulties. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed. The participants were tenth-grade students of the Rekayasa Perangkat Lunak program. Data were collected through a writing test and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings revealed that students experienced significant difficulties in forming regular and irregular verb forms, using the past forms of “to be” (was/were), and maintaining tense consistency throughout their narratives. The errors were primarily influenced by limited vocabulary mastery, insufficient understanding of grammatical rules, lack of structured practice, and low learning motivation. These findings indicate that students’ grammatical competence significantly affects their narrative writing performance. Therefore, contextualized grammar instruction, systematic explanation of verb forms, and continuous guided writing practice are essential to enhance students’ mastery of the simple past tense and improve their overall writing proficiency.

Abstract

Gender is a significant social construct that influences various aspects of life, including education and media representation. This study investigates gender representation in the New Frontiers 2 English textbook for Grade 8 students at SMP Swasta Methodist Tanjung Morawa. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Using Logsdon’s (1985) framework, which identifies six aspects of gender representation, the study analyzes the prevalence and portrayal of male and female characters in terms of pictures, mentions, roles, games, role models, and naming patterns. The findings reveal imbalances in representation, with males dominating leadership and technical roles, while females are more often linked to descriptive or emotional contexts. This highlights the need for equitable gender portrayals in textbooks to foster inclusive and unbiased learning environments. The study emphasizes the importance of critically evaluating educational materials to ensure they promote gender equality, aligning with Indonesia’s commitment to creating equitable learning opportunities.
