Abstract

Communicative speaking skill is considered the most essential skill for everyday situations and for a wide range of professions especially in the economic and business sector. The purpose of this research is to improve students speaking skill of UKI Paulus Makassar through the implementation English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) namely (1) planning, (2) actions, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. For the purpose of the topic, 35 students were selected as the subject. Research method was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with Kemmis and Taggart model. It was conducted for about two cycles namely cycle I and cycle II. According to the results of speaking test, findings showed that the implementation English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in teaching had positive meaningful effect on improving students’ speaking skill after being obtained test results both cycle 1 and cycle II in Economic and Business students of UKI Paulus Makassar

Abstract

Mastery of vocabulary is very important in reading comprehension and determines how well students understand the text. This is the reason for doing this research. The objectives are 1) to determine students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of tenth graders of SMA Negeri 13 Makassar; 2) to determine the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of tenth graders of SMA Negeri 13 Makassar. The research method used is the correlational design method with a quantitative approach. The population in this study amounted to 288 students, 36 students were taken from the total population. The sampling technique is using purposive sampling technique. Vocabulary mastery data were collected using multiple choice tests while reading comprehension data were collected using multiple choice and essay tests. The results of this study were then analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient with the SPSS 22.0 application. The results of statistical calculations between variables X and Y are positive with an rxy of 0.206. Then rxy is compared with r table product moment at a significant level of 5% with a sample of 36 students, it is found that rxy > rtable is 0.546 > 0.329 in a low level of relationship. Therefore, hypothesis one (H1) is accepted while Hypothesis Null (????0) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 13 Makassar. This proves that the more English vocabulary the students have, the better their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study analyzes the novel that entitled The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Based on the novel, the character tries to do anything to get their happiness such as wasting their money for unimportant things which is called hedonism. This study aimed to analyze the representative of hedonism ideology and the culture in New York in 1920s in the Great Gatsby novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The theories that are used in this study are hedonism theory. This study uses sociological approach and library research which takes some information related to the research problems from books and other literatures to gather the data. The result of the analysis to answer the first research problem shows that from seven kinds of hedonism, there are two kinds that are found by researchers in this study; Hedonistic Egoism, and Hedonistic Utilitarianism. The first kind is Hedonistic Egoism that can be seen when Tom and Daisy move to another city and let Gatsby clean up the mess that they have made. The last kind is Hedonistic Utilitarianism that can be seen when Gatsby often holds parties for anyone.

Abstract

The use of technology in learning English-speaking skills has grown rapidly. One such technology is the computer-aided learning media. The use of computer media in the field of education has many advantages as they are easier to access, disseminate and store. The aim of present study is to investigate the impact of computer assisted language learning (CALL) technology on Indonesian learners' speaking skills. This study applied quantitative research. The results of study found that the use of information technology in learning is marked by the interaction between students and materials through internet technology, the existence of programmed teaching, and flexibility in the process. learning both in terms of time and place.  It can be concluded that it is very possible for us to be easily literate through various media, with this we can improve the quality of speaking.
