Abstract

This research aims to determine the contributions of WhatsApp group as an English writing learning medium for high school students. This research applied a study case method through a qualitative approach. To achieve the research objectives, the data were collected through interviews. The participants in this research were eight eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Luwu Timur, who had met the criteria determined by the researchers (purposive sampling). The results show the contributions of WhatsApp group as a medium in learning writing, such as: (1) students found WhatsApp Group as a fun and simple learning medium (2) WhatsApp group keeps students active during the learning process (3) WhatsApp group can build good communication between students and teacher (4) WhatsApp group make it easier for students to get the learning material (5) WhatsApp group help students to study writing via online (6) WhatsApp group can be used as a media to promote individual learning.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to discover whether some effects of Zootopia movies on vocabulary mastery of the junior secondary students in vocabulary teaching have an effect or not. The pre-experimental design was the method used by the researchers with one class pre-test and post-test. The secondary students were the population of MTsN Kota Parepare in the 2021/2022 academic year. The sample was taken with a cluster random sampling technique that consisted of 25 students. The instrument of this research was a vocabulary test administered as a pre-test and post-test. This research found a substantial difference in students' scores before and after treatment. As can be observed from the mean score, students' pre-test means score was (53,24), which was lower than their post-test mean score (85,96). The significant value of this research (0.000) was lower than the significant level (0.05). Therefore, the use of Zootopia Movie as a teaching media can increase students’ vocabulary mastery of the secondary students of MTsN Kota Parepare. The result of rxy is -0,461, and after being consulted to the table, rxy (- 0,461) is very weak. It means that the correlation is negative, using the Zootopia movie as a teaching media. In this case, the researchers conclude that there is a negative correlation between vocabulary test and students' responses using the Zootopia movie as a teaching media at secondary students of MTsN Kota Parepare.

Abstract

This research was quantitative approach that aimed to find out the student perception in using podcast as a medium to improve listening skill at English Education study program, Faculty of Language and Literature, State University of Makassar. The research sampel is students English Education 2017, Faculty of Language and Literature, State University of Makassar. Purposive sampling will be used in this research. The data was collected by used Questionnaire and Interview. The result of the data analysis showed that the student and teacher agreed about their easier understanding to the subject when the teacher used podcast in teaching listening. They also agreed that using podcast can help them in remembering the subject. It was proved from the result of the questionnaire and interview. The result of the questionnaire showed that 64% of student stated that the use of podcast in listening helps them in understanding vocabulary in listening to understand the content, and the result of interview showed that podcasting can be a facilitating tool in EFL teaching that helps students mostly in listening. So, it can be concluded that students’ perception on using podcast in teaching listening was positive. By using podcast, they felt more interesting in learning the subject of listening and they didn’t get bored during the lesson, so they can more enjoy understanding the content of listening.

Abstract

This study aims to describe teachers’ strategies in teaching English online during the pandemic. The researchers applied qualitative methods to achieve the research objectives, the data collected in this research were in the form of interviews. The subjects of this study were English teachers at SMP NEG. 1 Mappakasunggu and SMP NEG. 1 Mangarabombang. The interview sample was 8 teachers. In this study, researchers analyzed the data by understanding, compiling codes, looking for themes, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the study, the researchers found that teachers' strategies in teaching English online during a pandemic are discussion, independent learning, small group work, project and collaborative learning. Although choosing learning media is the most important thing for online learning success, teachers also try their best to convey the learning material well.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out whether or not using YouTube videos in English with the let’s talk-free English lessons channel in improving the EFL students’ vocabulary mastery in first grade of SMP Negeri 2 Mangarabombang Takalar. This study uses a quantitative method with a pre-experimental research design, where the sample is class VII A, with Twenty-three (23) students, and uses simple random sampling. The instrument used is a test (posttest and pretest) which has the purpose to obtain data for the study. The results of the data analysis showed that by watching YouTube videos students' vocabulary mastery improved. It can be proven by the t-test value was lower than P (0.000 ˂ 0.05) which means (H0) of this research was rejected and (H1) was accepted. in addition, it is concluded that using YouTube video in English with let’s talk-free English lessons channel can develop the vocabulary mastery of the first-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Mangarabombang Takalar.

Abstract

This study is a qualitative case study using the descriptive qualitative method in collecting data which aims to find out (a) students’ perceptions of interactions and how their teacher teaches English using Google Classroom, (b) students’ perceptions of their feedback given in learning English using Google Classroom, (c) students’ perceptions of the assignment from learning English using Google Classroom, (d) students’ perception of teaching materials given by the teacher in learning English using Google Classroom. The participants were students of class XII MIPA 4 of SMAN 1 Mamuju for the academic year 2021/2022 as many as thirty-four students. This study used purposive sampling in selecting the participants. The result shows that (a) students’ perception of the way their teacher of teaching English using Google Classroom was negative because the teacher was less interactive in teaching; (b) there are three types of feedback given by students to the teacher, namely asking the question during the learning process, answering teacher questions and giving statements/reasons when asking permission or notifying students if they are sick; (c) there are several students perceptions on the way the teacher gives English assignments using Google Classroom, namely positive, neutral, and negative; and (d) the students perceive the teaching material provided by the teacher in learning English using Google Classroom which gives to two perceptions, namely satisfactory and unsatisfactory.

Abstract

This study aimed to find what types of speech errors uttered and investigate the dominant types of speech errors were uttered in HiHo Kids YouTube videos. This research approach was descriptive qualitative. The data sources in this study came from fifteen videos on HiHo Kids YouTube. Data were described based on the theory of Clark and Clark (1977). The results of the research showed that: (1) There were seven types of speech errors based on Clark and Clark’s theory. There were 98 speech errors uttered by 15 videos, consisting of 23 silent pauses, 27 filled pauses, 21 repeats, 1 retraced false start, 3 corrections, 2 stutters, and 21 interjections. (2) The most dominant error was filled pause, which consists of 27 utterances. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that speech errors uttered by the kids were normal because they did not use any script, they spoke spontaneously, and the listener can understand what the speaker said.
