Abstract

Chronic renal failure is the deterioration of kidney function, which, over time, will be increasingly damaged and cannot be repaired so that the body fails to maintain metabolic, fluid, and electrolyte balance. Thirst is one of the problems often encountered in patients undergoing hemodialysis with fluid restriction. Thirst is typically responded to by drinking, but patients with renal failure are not allowed to respond the usual way to the thirst experienced. Therefore, thirst management is essential. One thirst management that can be applied to respond to thirst is chewing gum to reduce thirst in chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. Hemodialysis patients experience thirst, which causes discomfort and affects quality of life; chewing gum (peppermint) is an intervention that can be used to reduce thirst. This study aimed to determine the effect of chewing gum on thirst in hemodialysis patients. The research design used is a quasi-experiment with a one-group pre-test design. The sampling technique was purposive sampling with a total sample of 35 respondents. The intervention group was given chewing gum. The thirst assessment instrument uses the Thirst Distress Scale (TDS) assessment instrument. Research results: The average thirst before chewing gum (22.34) is severe. After being given the intervention for three days, the patient's thirst decreased to (12.91) mild thirst. Analysis using the Wilcoxon test with a p-value of 0.000 ? < 0.05, where there is a significant effect of chewing gum on thirst in hemodialysis patients at Dr. M Yunus Bengkulu Hospital.

Abstract

Bronchial asthma is a non-infectious disease characterized by the narrowing of the respiratory tract due to excessive activity in response to certain stimuli. The prevalence of asthma in Indonesia is 13 per 1,000 population. The highest incidence of asthma is in Central Sulawesi at 7.8% and in East Nusa Tenggara at 7.3%. Risk factors for bronchial asthma are internal and external factors. Inflammation associated with bronchospasm involves damage to the smooth muscle of the bronchi resulting in shortness of breath accompanied by wheezing breath sounds. Narrowing of the airways causes shortness of breath and can have adverse effects on the sufferer. One of the non-pharmacological procedures that is easy to carry out and does not require costs, as well as side effects, is PLB and semi-Fowler position aimed at reducing shortness of breath in patients with bronchial asthma. This action is carried out 5-8 times for 15 minutes. This type of research uses descriptive case study research, the number of samples in the study is 1 patient. The results of the case study indicate that after performing purse lip breathing and semi-Fowler position for 15 minutes each day, within 3 days, as evidenced by a respiratory rate (RR) 22 x/minute and SpO₂: 99%.

Abstract

Abstract

Stroke patients generally need a long recovery because most individuals undergoing hospital treatment experience disabilities in several parts of the body. Therefore, survivors need the help of other people to live daily life; this role is taken on by caregivers. Caregivers play a crucial role for stroke survivors during the process of long-term rehabilitation and must assume many responsibilities. For this reason, knowledge and skills are needed in caring for post-stroke patients at home. One of the efforts that can be done is through education and training for caregivers and health cadres. This community service activity aimed to enhance cadres’ and caregivers’ knowledge and skill in providing care for families after a stroke. The target population comprised 16 caregivers and seven cadres who supported the families. The results of the community service activities demonstrated an increase in caregivers' knowledge by 32.8 points following the training activities, with a p-value of 0.001 (<α= 0.05), indicating that the difference between the pre- and post-values is statistically significant. The results of observations of cadre and caregiver skills regarding post-stroke care at home include Range of Motion (ROM) exercises, assistance with daily activities, and training in communication in the moderate category. Cadres are expected to continue supporting families as caregivers to be able to care for post-stroke patients at home.
