Abstract

 This article addressed identity reconstruction through an analysis of two of the most prominent fictional works by one of the Chinese Indonesian young writers, Audrey Yu Jia Hui. In encompassing the idea of identity rewriting, I addressed Hui’s second and third novels respectively, Mellow Yellow Drama (2014) and Mencari Sila Kelima (Searching for the Fifth Principle, 2015), through the post-structural concepts of Derrida’s deconstruction, and also in relation to cultural studies views on identity. The works were analyzed through close-reading technique. The novels were published during the Reformation (Reformasi) era, where politics had served to be a profound aspect that directed the cultural identity and social attitude of the society. In a range of aspects, from narrative structure to their deeper themes, Hui’s literary works were found to draw on a distinguishable set of strategies which enabled Hui to establish her own identity as someone who was liberated, culturally accepted and free to embrace local colors. This article also showed that Audrey Yu Jia Hui’s narratives have served as an acceptance of an individual’s multiple identities, which often depends on the problem at hand as well as the context of choices.

Abstract

This article strives to deconstruct the main characters? cultural identity in Rishi Reddi?s short stories collection, entitled Karma and Other Stories, as the characters deal with their lives as Indian diaspora in the United States. The applied method is the close-reading technique. This article employs Jacques Derrida?s deconstruction by tracing the binary opposition found within the seven short stories; later they are to be disseminated so that the true meanign can be revealed. The article finds that (1) the emerging conflicts in the stories are caused by the strong ties of the protagonists toward Hinduism and Indian family tradition, with (2) their cultural identity has managed to align with modernity in the US, but (3) their ties to the core Hinduism and Indian principles will remain strong.

Abstract

Artikel berjudul Struktural (dan) Semantik: Teropong Strukturalisme dan Aplikasi Teori Nratif A.J. Greimas merupakan upaya untuk menguji kontribusi dan relevansi strukturalisme, baik sebagai teori, metode, maupun paradigma, dalam perkembangan kajian sastra dan budaya mutakhir. Adapun Struktural Semantik adalah buku yang ditulis A.J. Greimas, salah seorang strukturalis yang teorinya tentang naratif teks kerap digunakan. Penelitian ini disusun dengan metode deskripsi kritis yang dikonkretkan dengan aplikasi teori A.J. Greimas terhadap teks cerpen ?Filosofi Kopi? untuk menunjukkan jangkauan serta limitasi teori yang didasarkan pada paradigma strukturalisme tersebut. Hasilnya, strukturalisme sebagai suatu teori dan metode berhasil mengidentifikasi makna secara rigid, namun tidak atau kurang mampu mengelaborasi makna secara lebih kompleks. Meskipun demikian, strukturalisme tetap perlu dilakukan sebagai salah satu tahap analisis yang darinya elaborasi dimungkinkan terjadi. Abstract: The article entitled Structural (and) Semantic: Perspective on Structuralism and the Application of A.J Greimas? Narrative Theory examines the relevance of structuralism as well as its contribution either as a theory, method, or paradigm, in the development of contemporary literature and cultural studies. Structural Semantic is a book written by A.J. Greimas, a structuralist whose narrative theory is widely used. This research used critical descriptive method, concreted by Greimas' theory applied to a short story entitled ?Filosofi Kopi?, in order to reveal its scope and limitation based on the paradigm of the structuralism. The result suggested that structuralism, both as theory and method, could identify meaning rigidly, yet structuralism could not elaborate meaning more complexly. However, structuralism is still necessary as a stage of analysis from which elaboration is possible. Key Words: structuralism, narrative, paradigm, actan

Abstract

This article discusses the concepts of  Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas that integrate literary study, sociology, economics  and politics in the study of  recent literature. Although Bourdieu’s thought began widely introduced into the social -humanities studies in Indonesia, but the application of  these ideas in literary studies in Indonesia are relatively not much done. Abstract

The article entitled Sastra ‘Mungkin’:  A Symbolic contestation of  Andrea Hirata in Indonesian Literature Arena is discussing the literary practices of  Andrea Hirata, a novelist who surprisingly popular in Indonesian literature from 2006 to present.  This article aims to explicit the views and contestation of  Andrea Hirata literary practices based on his views in gaining legitimacy of  his works as an author. This research applies Pierre Bourdieu’s Arena Cultural Production, which assumes that literature is not just a question of  aesthetics but also the struggle of positions between agents operating in the literary arena. According to the research that has been conducted, the result reveals that Andrea Hirata actually has a tendency, furthermore, obsession, in order to gain a specific legitimacy as an author (literar y figure). Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplisitkan aspek naratif dan diskursif film Perempuan Tanah Jahanam karya Joko Anwar meliputi aspek penokohan, genre, dan master genre, yang berujung pada pemaknaan terhadap film tersebut. Data-data didapatkan dengan teknik simak-catat dari transkripsi dialog dan tangkap layar scene film. Data-data dianalisis berdasarkan teori naratif model aktansial Greimas dan puitika film David Bordwell untuk menunjukkan sintaksis naratif, skema aktansial, hingga pada semiotic square. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa, pertama, meskipun dikemas dalam genre horor supranatural dan ditemukan penggunaan naratif tragedi Aristotelian sebagai master genre, film ini sesungguhnya berbicara tentang martabat manusia hidup, khususnya martabat perempuan. Hal itu terlihat dari aktan-aktan yang mendominasi sintaksis naratif cerita adalah perempuan dengan premis cerita keinginan mendapatkan harta warisan hingga pada akhirnya mendorong seseorang untuk berjuang mengakhiri misteri dan kutukan keluarga. Tokoh-tokoh perempuan itu digambarkan sebagai subjek bagi tindakan serta tubuhnya, tetapi jauh dari kesan eksploitasi seksual seperti pada film horor Indonesia lainnya. Kedua, pada aspek diskursif, penelitian ini menemukan diskursus eksotifikasi yang ditunjukkan dengan hadirnya kode-kode sinematik tentang stereotipe masyarakat eastern yakni irasional, mistis, tradisional, eksotis, dan bahkan masih berperilaku bar-bar.

Abstract

AbstrakEsai berjudul Ekonomi Politik Film Dokumenter Indonesia: Dependensi Industri Film Dokumenter Indonesia kepada Lembaga Donor Asing 2 membahas struktur produksi film dokumenter di Indonesia di tengah wacana globalisasi dan kapitalisme global. Struktur produksi tersebut merepresentasikan praktik neokolonialisme berkedok globalisasi, khususnya dalam konteks media. Implikasinya, alih-alih mencoba mandiri atau independen, ketergantungan para sineas dan rumah produksi pada lembaga donor sebagai pemberi danamenjadi kemutlakan bagi berlangsungnya aktivitas produksi film dokumenter. Program program produksi film dokumenter seperti KickStart (In-Docs), Eagle Awards (Metro TV), Project Change (Kalyana Shira) yang rutin diselenggarakan setiap tahun merupakan contoh kongkret praktik tersebut. Penulis menggunakan kerangka berpikir cultural imperialism sebagai wujud neokolonialisme untuk mengidentifikasi proses kolonisasi beserta konsekuensi-konsekuensi yang ditimbulkannya.

Abstract

Penelitian yang berjudul “Perbandingan representasi etnis Uighur di Media Berita China Daily dan BBC” ini dilakukan oleh peneliti untuk melihat citra etnis Uighur yang direpresentasikan oleh China Daily dan BBC. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan memanfaatkan pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Teun A. Van Dijk terhadap analisis wacana media, yaitu melalui teks, kognisi sosial, dan konteks sosial dalam membongkar makna dibalik perbedaan representasi teks berita terkait isu etnis Uighur oleh kedua media tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa media berita online China Daily cenderung memberitakan etnis Uighur dalam perspektif eksotisme. Sementara itu, media berita online BBC memberitakan etnis tersebut secara lebih problematik. Perbedaan ini terjadi dikarenakan adanya pengaruh kognisi sosial dan konteks sosial para wartawan, seperti China Daily yang berada di bawah pengawasan Partai Komunis China dan BBC yang telah dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan sosialnya (sikap kritik).

Abstract

Abstract. This article discussed a movie entitled Air Terjun Pengantin, one of the horror movies played in Indonesia in 2010, by utilizing the theory of AJ Greimas’s narrative structure to identify inherent discourse. The discussion aimed at dismantling the cinematic and narrative conventions so that the film could be received and understood. The analysis showed the existence of between men and women relationship as well as the image of women in the film. The relationship went so smooth under the patriarchal ideology internalized through some points and one of them was the film. Thus, both in form and content, Air Terjun Pengantin was one of the films that continues to vocalize patriarchal ideology and women stereotyping. Keyword: struktur naratif, aktansial, perempuan
