Abstract

Media utilization plays a crucial role in enhancing the teaching and learning process within the classroom environment. This study investigates how a lecturer at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari perceives the use of teaching media in vocabulary instruction. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach through a case study, the research involved one lecturer and data collected from three classroom observations and two interviews. The analysis employed thematic coding across six key aspects: purpose, media selection, utilization, benefits, challenges, and effectiveness. The findings indicate that the lecturer employed a diverse range of teaching media, with multimedia resources, such as audio-books, being particularly prominent due to their integration of both audio and visual elements. Interviews data corroborates this observation, revealing the lecturer's belief that selecting appropriate media significantly enhances student engagement and aids in achieving learning objectives. Additionally, the study highlights that integrating various media types fosters a more interactive and dynamic vocabulary learning environment. The results further suggest that the lecturer demonstrates a robust understanding of media utilization, as evidenced by the absence of significant challenges in the process. Overall, the study underscores the effectiveness of diverse media in enriching vocabulary instruction and suggests that strategic media integration can greatly enhance the learning experience.

Abstract

This study examines students’ perceptions of Google Classroom as a tool for English reading instruction, utilizing Davis' (1989) Technology Acceptance Model to explore the interplay of perceived usefulness and ease of use in shaping their experiences. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five second-semester English education students selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis revealed both positive and negative perceptions of the platform. Positive perceptions centered on its accessibility, usefulness, efficiency, flexibility, and user-friendly features, which supported students in organizing tasks, managing time, and accessing learning materials seamlessly. However, challenges included dependence on stable internet connections and limited interactivity, which hindered collaborative learning and engagement. These findings underscore the dual nature of Google Classroom as both a facilitator and a constraint in digital learning environments. The study highlights the need for improved infrastructure, professional development for educators, and integration of supplementary tools to address identified limitations. The results contribute to the growing body of literature on technology-enhanced learning and offer practical implications for optimizing the use of digital tools in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. Future research should explore blended learning models and the integration of interactive tools to enhance the effectiveness of LMS platforms in fostering active and equitable learning experiences.

Abstract

This autoethnographic study explores how participation in an international student exchange program in the Philippines influenced an Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student’s confidence in speaking English. Drawing from the first author’s personal experiences during a semester at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, the study reflects on the emotional, social, and academic challenges encountered, and the growth that resulted from immersion in an English-speaking environment. Through systematic self-reflection and narrative inquiry, the research reveals that supportive intercultural interactions, exposure to authentic language use, and constructive feedback from mentors played a significant role in enhancing the author’s communicative confidence. The findings highlight the transformative potential of international exchange programs in fostering self-efficacy and language development among EFL learners.

Abstract

This qualitative research investigates the various factors that influence student engagement in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learning environments. By conducting semi-structured interviews with seven non-English major students at a private university in Southeast Sulawesi, the study offers in-depth insights into the experiences and perceptions of these students. The collected data were meticulously analyzed using thematic analysis, with Kahu's (2013) theoretical framework serving as a reference point for interpreting the findings. The research revealed that a significant number of students who attended English for Economics classes felt highly engaged in their learning process. Key factors contributing to this engagement included a strong interest in the course content and a high level of self-confidence among students. Additionally, the implementation of interactive teaching methods, the integration of technology in the classroom, and the relevance of the course content were found to be critical in enhancing student engagement. The roles of both students and teachers, characterized by effective interactions and collaborative efforts, also emerged as vital components. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of a well-structured classroom setting in fostering a conducive learning environment. These findings underscore the multifaceted nature of student engagement, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses both internal and external factors.

Abstract

English language skills is becoming increasingly vital in today's globalized world. Proficiency in vocabulary is essential for language acquisition since it improves students' conversational abilities and academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of educational English videos in promoting vocabulary acquisition among primary school pupils in Moramo. The study was conducted with one class of 16 grade five pupils at SDN 8, Moramo. Using a one-group pretest-posttest design that included 15 numbers of the pre-test. Data analysis revealed that the mean post-test score exceeded the mean pre-test score, with averages of 7.18 for the pre-test and 9.43 for the post-test. Statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test showed an improvement of 2.25 points in student performance after the test. The results of the paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.00 (p < 0.05), which means there is a significant difference between before and after the treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted, meaning the use of English educational videos significantly improved vocabulary achievement among primary school students in Moramo.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays a pivotal role in English learning as it forms the foundation for developing core language skills. However, many elementary students struggle with vocabulary acquisition due to limited exposure and the use of less effective instructional methods. This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of picture media as an interactive learning tool in enhancing the vocabulary mastery of fifth-grade students at Kofalagadi Elementary School, Menui District. A pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design was applied, involving 12 students as participants. The instrument used was a vocabulary test consisting of 20 items in the form of matching, multiple-choice, and jumbled-word questions. The findings showed that the students’ mean score improved from 65.83 in the pre-test to 95.00 in the post-test, with a mean difference of 29.17 points. The paired samples t-test indicated a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), confirming that there was a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the intervention. These results suggest that picture media, when applied interactively, can serve as an effective instructional strategy to support vocabulary learning, particularly at the elementary school level. Furthermore, this study provides practical insights for teachers in selecting engaging media and demonstrates that picture-based strategies can be effectively integrated into classroom practice to foster student motivation and vocabulary development.
