Abstract

Growing environmental concerns regarding plastic pollution, fossil resource depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions have intensified efforts to develop sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based polymers. Agricultural waste provides biomass containing cellulose, hemicellulose, starch, and lignin that can be transformed into biodegradable polymers through responsible synthesis pathways. Green chemistry offers a framework for reducing hazardous chemicals, energy consumption, and resource inefficiency while supporting circular bioeconomy principles. This study evaluated green chemistry strategies for producing biodegradable polymers from agricultural waste while enhancing polymer performance, sustainability, and industrial feasibility. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design involved 480 biomass samples and 210 laboratory- and pilot-scale synthesis experiments representing conventional, optimized, and sustainable production pathways. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, structural equation modeling, hierarchical regression, mediation, and moderation analyses. Qualitative evidence from expert interviews, industrial observations, lifecycle assessments, and policy documents was examined thematically. Findings showed that integrated green chemistry improved biomass conversion efficiency, polymer yield, molecular stability, biodegradation, catalyst recovery, energy efficiency, and lifecycle sustainability. Catalyst recovery partially mediated the relationship between green chemistry implementation and environmental performance, while reaction optimization strengthened the effect of biomass conversion on polymer quality. Sustainable production therefore requires coordinated biomass use, catalyst innovation, process optimization, and circular economy strategies.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of a MOOC-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing chemical literacy across three dimensions—content, procedural, and epistemic knowledge—among grade 10 high school students. Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the research gathered data through chemical literacy tests, interviews, and observations. The participants comprised 80 students from three districts in Central Java, Indonesia. Quantitative analysis using Rasch modeling revealed a significant improvement in scores, with an average pretest score of 44.82, increasing to 66.50 post-intervention. The effect size of 1.1819 was categorized as "good," indicating the model's potential for fostering learning. However, the average post-test score remained below the minimum completion criterion of75.80. Qualitative findings highlighted weaknesses in the problem orientation stage of the PBL model, particularly in connecting students’ prior knowledge to new learning objectives. This stage is critical for setting the foundation for subsequent PBL phases, suggesting that insufficient scaffolding may have hindered optimal learning outcomes. To enhance the effectiveness of MOOC-based PBL, the study recommends restructuring the problem orientation stage to align better with students' initial knowledge levels. These findings underscore the promise of integrating MOOC-based PBL in chemistry education while emphasizing the need for refinements to address identified challenges. By bridging gaps in problem orientation and fostering deeper connections between prior and new knowledge, this approach could more effectively support the development of chemical literacy, providing valuable insights for educators and policymakers.

Abstract

Science Generic skills are essential skills that must be mastered by students. Science generic skills can be assessed when students carry out practical activities through performance assessments. This study aims to develop an instrument based on general science in chemistry practicums on thermochemistry and reaction rates. This study was R&D with the ADDIE model, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The instruments used are validation sheets, reliability test sheets, and questionnaires. The results of data analysis showed that the instrument developed was valid, with an average score of 0.89 in a very good category. The results of the reliability test have a reliable category with an average intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the thermochemistry practicum of 0.766 and a reaction rate of 0.80, while the average values for the two labs are 0.903 and 0.921. The results of the practicality test showed that the percentage of positive responses was 91.29%, so it can be stated that the product has a practical category. Based on the result, the science generic skills instruments can be used in the assessment of thermochemistry and reaction rates in the practicum because they meet the valid, reliable, and practical requirements.
