Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine whether there is an influence of learning styles on the acquisition of English vocabulary. This study investigates whether there is an effect of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning style on English vocabulary. This type of research is correlation research. The population of this study were second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Padangsidimpuan. The number of samples in this study were 50 students who were randomly selected. To collect data, the researcher used a questionnaire and a vocabulary test. Questionnaires are given with the aim of knowing student learning styles. The researcher made observations in class when there was an English subject. The data obtained was tested by t-test to find out whether the learning style is significant to the acquisition of English vocabulary. The data shows that there are 14 (28%) students who are visual learners, 13 (26%) students with an auditory style and 23 (46%) as kinesthetic students. From the results of the hypothesis test it was found that the calculated value obtained was 0.694 and compared with the alpha table value of 0.05, the calculated value was greater than the table value. It states that there is a very strong influence between learning styles and English vocabulary. In other words, learning styles affect students' grades, especially English. Keywords: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

Osundare's involvement in performative poetry is an attempt to fulfill her social responsibilities and connect with her community as her collective poetry is expressed through performance. The rhetoric of his poems and the structure of their presentation explains why he uses the techniques and resources of the African oral tradition in many of his poems. The purpose of this study is to explore the intertextual relationship between the second generation of Nigerian artists and the new Nigerian artists in terms of colonial influences and relationships. This study shows that poet Niyi Osundare is a second generation iconoclast through which he influenced the poetic landscape of contemporary Nigeria. This study shows that contemporary poets are not significant and methodologically influential to other secular poetic texts, so the aesthetic principle of poetry is emphasized when the dialogue between texts is seen in the form of Osundare poetry. Osundare tells about the paradigm shift of intertextual relations from a vertical point of view, and the artistic practices preserved from the colonial period are the vertical practices of the postcolonial space. The research is qualitative in nature and primarily analyzed primary and secondary data from the literature, original research and literature review. This study also uses poststructuralist intertextuality as a theoretical framework to explore the extent of intertextual relationships. This study suggests that in order to understand recent Nigerian poetry in English, there is an urgent need to explore the history of their intertextuality. Beyond the intertextual dimension, this study demonstrates that the symbiotic relationship between power and traditional formation provides an ontological framework for examining the aesthetic experience of recent English poetry in Nigeria.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how taste and social class are represented through language signs, both verbal and non-verbal signs, in Del Monte Barbeque Sauce advertisement. In analysing this advertisement, Barthes' semiotic theory and Bourdieu's concept of taste and social class are used. The method used in this study is descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, it is found that this advertisement aims to convince readers to be able to bring the feel of luxury, which is identical to upper class, at home through the products offered. This departs from the advertiser's assumption that basically people from the working class, which is the segmentation of the readers of this ad, have the same taste for goods as people from the upper class.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to produce an English module for physiotherapy study program consisting of four basic English skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing. This study belongs to quantitative descriptive with R and D method through applying ADDIE model with 3 media and material experts as validators and 30 students as the subjects while the object is the quality of the developed module as learning media. The data include interview result with the lecturer teaching English as primary data and the secondary ones are content, language, context and presentation validation analysis result, students learning test result and questionnaire filled by the students after using module. Index of Aiken’s V is used as technique for data analysis. The findings show that the average of Aiken’s V index based on content, language, context and presentation validation result is 0.78 which means valid, so the module could be used as learning media. The average score of students learning test with four basic competencies is 75.89, so it is concluded that the module could improve four English basic competencies significantly. Based on students’ questionnaire responses, the module could be recommended as learning media. Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menghasilkan modul bahasa Inggris khusus untuk program studi fisioterapi yang meliputi empat kompetensi dasar yaitu mendengar, berbicara, membaca dan menulis. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metode R and D melalui pengaplikasian model ADDIE dengan subjek penelitian yaitu 3 orang ahli media dan materi sebagai validator dan 30 mahasiswa, sedangkan objek penelitian yaitu kualitas dari modul yang dikembangkan sebagai media pembelajaran. Data dalam penelitian ini meliputi data primer yaitu hasil wawancara dengan dosen pengampu mata kuliah dan data sekunder yaitu hasil analisis validasi isi, bahasa, kontekstual, dan penyajian modul oleh validator, tes hasil belajar mahasiswa dan angket penilaian mahasiswa setelah menggunakan modul. Teknik yang digunakan dalam analisis data yaitu dengan indeks Aiken’s V. Hasil validasi modul baik kelayakan isi, bahasa, konstekstual dan penyajian diperoleh rata-rata indeks Aiken’s V yaitu 0,78 dengan kriteria valid sehingga modul bahasa Inggris fisioterapi layak dijadikan media pembelajaran. Rata-rata nilai tes hasil belajar mahasiswa dengan empat kompetensi dasar bahasa Inggris yaitu 75,89, sehingga disimpulkan bahwa modul dapat meningkatkan kompetensi dasar bahasa Inggris dengan cukup signifikan. Berdasarkan hasil respon angket mahasiswa terhadap modul bahwa modul dapat direkomendasikan sebagai media pembelajaran.
