Abstract

Physical education classroom activities are often dominated by technical skill drills rather than emphasizing game intelligence, engagement, and meaningful classroom activity experiences. In recent years, the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model has gained increasing attention as an alternative pedagogical approach in physical education. However, findings on its effectiveness remain fragmented across studies and often focus on limited classroom activity outcomes or specific sport contexts. Therefore, this study aims to systematically examine the effects of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) classroom activity model on student achievement in physical education by synthesizing empirical evidence published between 2018 and 2024. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach using PRISMA guidelines to systematically identify, screen, and analyze relevant literature. A total of 15 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The findings indicate that the TGfU model positively influences student achievement, fundamental sports skills, classroom activity motivation, active classroom activity time, and social interaction in physical education classes. In addition, TGfU supports students' cognitive and social development through game-based classroom activities that encourage decision-making, collaboration, and problem-solving. These findings confirm that TGfU is an effective and relevant student-centered learning model for contemporary physical education. Furthermore, future research is recommended to employ longitudinal and experimental research designs involving larger and more diverse samples to strengthen evidence regarding the long-term effectiveness of TGfU implementation across various educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) learning model in invasion games on gross motor skills and decision-making ability of elementary school students. The research method used was an experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 32 fourth-grade students of SDN 032 Tilil Bandung City aged 9–10 years, selected using a purposive sampling technique. The treatment was given in 8 sessions. The instruments used were the Test of Gross Motor Development-Second Edition (TGMD-2) to measure gross motor skills and the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) to measure decision-making ability. The Shapiro–Wilk test results showed that motor skills data were normally distributed (p > 0.05), while decision-making data were not normally distributed (p < 0.05). Hypothesis testing used the Paired Samples T-Test for motor skills and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test for decision making. The results showed a significant improvement in gross motor skills and decision-making ability after the implementation of the TGfU model. Thus, the TGfU learning model in invasion games proved to be effective in improving gross motor skills and decision-making ability of elementary school students. Abstract

This study aimed to determine and analyze the effect of implementing instant activity during recess time on improving gross motor skills of elementary school students. This study uses an experiment with a quantitative approach. The sample consists of fifth and sixth grade students aged 11-12 years and fourth grade students aged 9-10 years at SDN 065 Cihampelas who were selected using purposive sampling techniques. The research instrument used was PAQC (Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children) to measure children's physical activity and then TGMD (Test of Gross Motor-Second Edition) to measure children's gross motor skills. The results of the study showed that the average value of physical activity at SDN 065 Cihampelas was 2.34 in the pretest while the average value of the posttest was 2.66. While in the locomotor pretest the mean value was 40.62 while the locomotor posttest value was 43.95. While in the control object pretest the average value was 39.85 while the average value in the control object posttest was 44.17. Based on the paired t-test, there was a difference between before and after treatment. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the ability to optimize reccess time through instant activity on the level of physical activity and gross motor skills in elementary school students.
