Abstract Japanese has many particles, one of them is o (を). Because of a constraint known as the double-o constraint, there shouldn't be any two o particles in a single Japanese sentence. The aim of this article is to describe what types of double-o sentences are permissible and what the meaning of a sentence with a double o is. The writer gathers data from a variety of sources through library study techniques, then sorts and analyzes the material using the distribution method. When o particles objects are in the same phrase, the double-o constraint occurs. In a causative sentence, the double-o constraint is more noticeable. There are two types of causative sentences: o-causative and ni-causative but they can be used only when accompanied by intransitive verbs. The o particle is used to indicate the direct object, hence in a compound sentence with the double o, the subject performs two acts against each object. Keywords: Causative sentence, double o, o particle Abstrak Bahasa Jepang terdapat banyak sekali partikel, satu diantaranya adalah o (を).

Han characters (kanji) used in written Japanese come from China, but there are characters created separately in Japan called kokuji. This research aims to investigate the formation of kokuji according to Peirce’s semiotics and rikusho (traditional classification of Chinese characters) by Xu Shen, and one additional proposed Chinese character category—namely, the kaii-keisei class. The method used in this study is library research. Of the 87 data samples taken from Reiman (1983), shoukei characters made 0% of the total amount, shiji 2.3%, kaii 71.3%, kaii-keisei 4.6%, keisei 19.5%, kasha 2.3%, and tenchuu characters 1%. Analysis results show that the formation of kokuji follows the principles of rikusho. From a semiotic point of view, objects represented by kokuji determine their sign-vehicles. Sign-vehicles are kanji or its components with perceived relations to the object. Sign-vehicles are chosen to form a kokuji based on their ability to represent the object.

The language reflects the society and culture of the language user, so that in the translation process it is inevitable that there will be shifts from the source language (S.L.) to the target language (T.L.). This study aims to describe the types of shifts in the thesis data of students of the Maranatha Christian University Japanese Literature Study Program and describe the effect of these changes on the meaning of the translation of thesis data for Japanese Literature Study Program students. The object of this research is the students' linguistic thesis data. The data on the student thesis is written in Japanese using Japanese letters, then Japanese using Latin letters, and then translated into Indonesian. This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to complete the translation shift in form and meaning. In the analysis process, the method used is the translational equivalent method. The theories used include Nida and Taber and J.C. Catford (1965). The translation shift is divided into two types, namely level shift and category shift, to achieve a good level of equivalence for the quality of the resulting translation. Category shift is divided into four subsections: structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intrasystem shift. The conclusion obtained from this research is the shift translation that occurs in the form of class shift, structure shift, and intrasystem shift. Shifts are unavoidable to get easy-to-understand translation results in the target language (T.L.). Keywords: Catford; translation shift; equivalence.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in the Chokai 5 (listening) class. It is designed for those who wish to pass the JLPT N2. This research involved sixth-semester students of the Japanese Literature Study Program in Language and Culture Faculty of Maranatha Christian University. Using classroom action research (CAR), this study gathered the data using observations in pre-cycle, cycle 1, and cycle 2. In addition, this study also collected data through the simulation exam of JLPT N2 and the questionnaires on the students' perceptions of the PjBL model. The results of the study confirmed a substantial increase of 26.7% in the number of students achieving a minimum score after participating in the JLPT N2 listening simulation, compared to a pre-cycle frequency. The difference was statistically significant ( P <.05). The questionnaire results showed positive perceptions of learning using PjBL. Thus, it can be understood that the PjBL method can make students enthusiastic about independent learning to improve JLPT N2 listening score results.

Abstract. This study investigates the representation of fragile masculinity and the social anxieties of single men in the Japanese television series Turn to Me, Mukai-kun. Employing a qualitative method grounded in Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, the research analyzes how the protagonist, Mukai, reflects the ongoing crisis of masculinity in contemporary Japan. The findings reveal that Mukai embodies an alternative masculinity characterized by emotional openness, uncertainty, and a departure from traditional male dominance. Through this portrayal, the series exposes the tension between hegemonic masculine ideals and the realities of modern single men. The study demonstrates that Turn to Me, Mukai-kun both critiques and redefines conventional gender expectations, suggesting that Japanese popular media serves as a site for negotiating new and diverse masculine identities. These insights contribute to broader discussions on shifting gender roles and the cultural reimagining of masculinity in Japan.

Onomatopoeia is an imitation of sounds in the form of words to describe the state or sound produced by living things and inanimate objects. Onomatopoeia and mimesis have the same meaning, namely imitating or imitating sounds. In anime, mimesis is used to describe the state or activity of living things and inanimate objects. This study aims to describe the use of mimesis, types of mimesis, and the meaning of Japanese mimesis in the anime 呪術廻戦Jujutsu Kaisen. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with literature study research techniques. The results of the study show that mimesis is widely used to clarify the expression of characters and the atmosphere of the story. The most dominant type of mimesis is giyougo, which describes the state or activities of a character. In addition, it was found that the meaning of mimesis can change depending on the context of its use in dialogue. This study provides a deeper insight into the role of mimesis in Japanese communication, particularly in popular media such as anime.

Abstract Roujingo, the elderly language in Japanese fiction, is part of yakuwarigo or role language. Roujingo is frequently employed in fictional works to portray characters with certain stereotypes, such as advanced age or high social status. This study aims to examine the use of roujingo in the anime Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken through a sociolinguistic approach, applying three of Fishman's seven sociolinguistic dimensions as cited in Malabar (2015), namely speaker identity, interlocutor identity, and the location of speech events. The data consist of six sets of dialogues from Season 3, episodes 1, 2, 3, and 20, collected using the observation and note-taking technique. The analysis reveals that the use of roujingo in this anime not only reflects age or social status but also functions as a marker of authority, power hierarchy, and character construction including characters who appear visually young but are actually of advanced age, as seen in the characters Luminous Valentine and Veldora. This study also highlights the distinction between the use of roujingo in anime and its use in Japanese social reality, where this linguistic style is rarely found in everyday conversation. This research is expected to contribute to understanding the relationship between language, stereotypes, and social dynamics in fictional media.

This study addresses gaps in Doublespeak, the use of language that obscures meaning through ambiguity, euphemism, and hyperbole in Instagram and TikTok beauty product discount ads, where ambiguous promotional language is commercially influential and under-studied academically. This study aims to identify the linguistic forms of Doublespeak, analyze the discursive strategies used to frame discount claims, and uncover its ideological function in digital advertising discourse. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach in the framework of critical discourse analysis. The ad data, which netted as many as 70 discount ads for beauty products, were collected from the products' official accounts on Instagram and TikTok through documentation techniques. Furthermore, the data were encoded and analyzed in three dimensions, namely text, discursive practice, and social practice. The results showed that Doublespeak was realized through five overlapping categories, namely up-to claims, scarcity claims, urgency claims, vague superiority claims, and pseudo-scientific claims. Discursively, this strategy views discounts as rare opportunities limited by time and uncertain pricing information. Ideologically, Doublespeak serves to reproduce digital consumerism and normalize certain beauty standards. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the concept of Doublespeak with the practice of promoting discounts as a construction of economic discourse on social media. This research contributes to critical linguistics and consumer literacy of digital advertising language, as well as the need for closer scrutiny of discount claims and further research into how audiences actually interpret them.
