The paper address the political view of ‘Abd al-Rahmān b. Ahmad al-Kawākibī (1855- 1902) in the context of historical tradition and political structure of the Ottoman caliphate in the late 19th century. It looks into his critics of dictatorial rule and oppressive system of the caliphate and its call for the dismantling of the unjust and tyrannical framework. The study is based on qualitative method and documentary approach. The data obtained from reliable library material and source in the form of manuscript, dissertation, book, newspaper and magazine. The information derived is analysed using descriptive, analytical, comparative, and historical method. The finding shows that al-Kawakibi’s underlying philosophy and movement has largely influenced the Arab consciousness of the Middle East in the late 19th century, inspiring revolutionary ideas and movement in the East Mediterranean toward meaningful political liberation and the formation of nation state, bringing the spirit of nationalism and enlightenment throughout the Arab world.

The paper aims to study the historical background of Islamic reform movement in West Sumatera with particular reference to the idea of Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah or his pseudonym Hamka (1908-1981). The main issues discusses is the context of socio-religious reform brought forth by Hamka in the quest of modernity and its enriching narrative of renewal and enlightening spiritual cause. Toward this end, this research aims to highlight Hamka’s significant work and aspiration for reform and the influence it developed in furthering his cause and legacy and monumental contribution in the history and tradition of reform in the Malay world. The study is based on normative and qualitative approaches in the form of content analysis. The data was conceptually analysed using descriptive, comparative and integrative method. The study found that Hamka’s modern idealism was instrumental in driving new consciousness of Islamic movement for reform (islah) and renewal (tajdid) in the Malay world contributing to unprecedented religious struggle that erupted in the late 20th century in Malay Archipelago. It reflected the force of modern ideas espoused by the leading Egyptian-mufti and polymath Shaykh Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) that had brought decisive and greatest influence in the region. The implication of study is the creation of significance framework of religious ideal embedded in the practice of Islamic modernity adopted from Hamka’s enlightening works and insights that present higher Islamic religious ideal and principle and the dynamic aspiration Kaum Muda (the young faction) in the context of its socio-religious development and influence reflecting their modern philosophy and construct.

The article highlights Rachid Ghannouchi’s political ideas in the context of the growth of political Islam in the Arab world by focusing on historical and political development that underlie the democratic process in Tunisia. It discusses political idealism he developed in Ennahda movement (The Renaissance Party) based on the principles of freedom and justice and its uncompromising opposition to the autocratic regime of Habib Bourguiba (1957-1987) and his successor Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali (1987-2011). The study is qualitative in nature in the form of documentary and content analysis. It used descriptive, analytical and historical approaches to analyse data derived from established archival sources. The study found that Ennahda Movement which was co-founded by Ghannouchi in 1981 as “The Movement of Islamic Tendency” had broad influence in mainstream Islamic politics in Tunisia, that espouse to dismantle the autocratic rule and decolonise the corrupt practice and political suppression of past regime. The influence it developed had broadly impacted both Islamic and secular forces to converge and commit toward democratic rule, human rights and the principle of justice, freedom, and the rule of law.

Abstract;Since the middle of 19th century, Muslims have made their ways to variously response to the ideas of modernity, many of which were markedly inspired by the pan-Islamist activist, Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, who started to espouse modern aspiration and inaugurate the Islamic reform movement throughout the Muslim world. This paper highlights the role of Muhammad Iqbal (1879-1938) in Islamic thought, through his philosophical premises to awaken the new Islamic consciousness in the Indian subcontinent, in continuing the tradition of al-Afghani and his religious struggle. The study was qualitative in nature designed based on documentary survey and analysis. It reviews related materials from normative and inductive perspectives. The data were analysed using scientific, descriptive, analytical and historical approaches to reach the final conclusion. The finding shows that Iqbal had formulated unprecedented ideas toward reconstruction and modernization in political, economic and social aspect. His works manifested broad and cohesive philosophical arguments and influences that largely impacted Muslim thought which help to develop their rational and dynamic framework to reconstruct the significance dimension of ijtihad and renewed their profound spiritual and metaphysical consciousness of the perennial and transcendental values of religion and its relevance to the modern context.Keywords:Applied Islamology; Arkoun; Episteme; Socio-Humanities Applications. Abstrak;Sejak pertengahan abad ke-19, umat Islam telah memberikan berbagai bentuk respon terhadap kemodenan, yang banyak diilhamkan dari pemikiran Sayyid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, pencetus idea pan-Islam. Artikel ini menyorot peranan Muhammad Iqbal (1879-1938) ahli falsafah dan pujangga Islam dari Selatan India dalam melanjutkan perjuangan al-Afghani dalam membangkitkan kefahaman baru Islam yang progresif. Premis falsafah yang dibangunkan dalam karya-karyanya memperlihatkan idea-idea pembaharuan yang mendalam tentang aspek-aspek perubahan dan pemodenan dalam konstruk politik, ekonomi dan sosial. Kajian ini dirangka berasaskan metode normatif dan induktif dari jenis penelitian kualitatif. Ia menerapkan metode dokumentasi historis dan analisis dalam peninjauan bahan yang kemudiannya dianalisis secara saintifik, analitis, dan deskriptif bagi mendapatkan rumusan dan kesimpulan akhir. Penemuan mendapati bahawa Iqbal telah melontarkan ide-ide pembaharuan dan rekonstruksi dalam karyanya The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam berasaskan pertimbangan-pertimbangan falsafah yang rasional dan dinamik dalam rangka membangun kembali alam fikiran Islam dan memulihkan struktur hukum, moral dan budayanya. Ia menunjukkan pengaruh yang meluas dari karyanya yang memberi impak yang mendalam terhadap upaya pembaharuan dan pengembangan ijtihad dan kesedaran metafizik yang transenden dan perenial.Kata Kunci: Aplikasi Ilmu Sosial-Humaniora; Arkoun; Episteme; Islamologi Terapan.

Looking from its surface, the highly superior and exceptional works of Pak Nurcholish Madjid (17 March 1939-29 August 2005) seems to invite his readers to argue and converse with him with absolute freedom without giving bother to any accusations or charges of anarchy. His writings that was full with philosophical arguments was constructed to inspired dialectical discussion and reasoning without ascribing to any established school of thought of the past. With his masterful works, it tries to challenges and draws our consciousness of the real force of intellectualism that was derived from scientific reflection and critical philosophical inquiry. It’s strength was derived from the empirical and historic method and framework in his effort to formulate and comprehend classical Islam and its intellectual tradition in term of its contextual and modern understanding and process.

Artikel ini menyoroti tanggapan intelektual para pemikir Islam kontemporer terhadap paham demokrasi dan syura. Artikel ini menelusuri beberapa karya dan tulisan terpilih yang mengungkap latar belakang filosofis dan perkembangan demokrasi di negara-negara muslim dan hubungannya dengan aspirasi politik Islam serta doktrin-doktrin dan tradisi-tradisi historisnya yang fundamental. Perdebatan intelektual yang muncul mengenai bentuk dan praktik demokrasi serta keselarasannya dengan prinsip-prinsip Islam telah banyak diungkapkan oleh para aktivis dan pemikir demokrasi seperti Rachid Ghannouchi, Ahmad Raysuni, Nurcholish Madjid, dan lain-lain. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif dan analitis. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan kekuatan gagasan yang dirumuskan tentang prinsip-prinsip dan cita-cita demokrasi serta manifestasi moralnya yang didukung oleh teks-teks hukum yang sarih dan sejalan dengan dasar dan kebijakan politik Islam (siyasah syar'iyyah) dan cita-cita ummatnya yang universal (pax-Islamica). Struktur ini dibangun oleh nilai-nilai etika praktis dan doktrin-doktrin yang membentuk pondasi ideologis sebagian besar negara Islam. Ini mewujudkan sikap positif terhadap konstruksi dan nilai-nilai ideal yang dibangun dalam konteks negara bangsa, yang menjunjung tinggi prinsip-prinsip dan praktik-praktik yang efektif dalam membangun tatanan negara yang adil, berkelanjutan, dan seimbang. Pendekatannya sejalan dengan teori dan prinsip-prinsip musyawarah serta gagasan konstitusional yang ditegakkan untuk melindungi hak-hak dan kepentingan rakyat yang sah serta aspirasi dan suara-suara kolektif. Kata Kunci : Demokrasi; Syura; Negara Islam; Masyarakat Madani; Maqasid Syariah. The article highlights intellectual response of contemporary Muslims on the philosophical construct and relational concept of democracy and shura. This was traced from selected writings of its advocates that discussed philosophical and epistemological background and current democratic situation in the Muslim countries and its fundamental relations with Islamic political aspiration and its historical manifestation and scientific backdrop. The intellectual debate pertinent to the idea of democracy and its compatibility with Islamic principles were rigorously developed by Muslim activists and democrats represented by Rachid Ghannouchi, Ahmad Raysuni, Nurcholish Madjid, and etc. The study is based on qualitative approaches using descriptive and analytical technique. The finding shows the dynamic force of ideas formulated on the theoretical framework of democracy reinforced with textual evidence and in line with Islamic political principles (siyasah syariyyah) and its universal ummatic ideal (pax-Islamica). Its underlying structure was built upon universal ethical values that formed the basis of state ideology. It positively embraces its values and ideals projected in the context of nation-state, which uphold sublime vision toward shaping a sustainable, just and liberal order. Its approaches were in line with the principle of shura and constitutional ideas aiming to safeguard fundamental aspiration of the people and their legitimate right and interest and their collective voice. This research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach and biographical analysis. Data were collected from Abduh's major theological and scientific works, such as Al-Islām wa al-Naṣrāniyyah ma'a al-'Ilm wa al-Madaniyyah, Tafsīr al-Manār, Tafsīr Juz 'Amma, and Risālat al-Tawḥīd, and supported by relevant secondary literature. The analysis was carried out by examining the main themes related to rational thought, the integration of science and religion, and Abduh's contribution to Islamic modernity. The results of the study show that Abduh made an important contribution in developing a scientific approach to religious texts, especially through the interpretation of the Qur'an which emphasizes the superiority of reason ('aql), freedom of thought (taḥarrur), and rationality. His views not only integrated modern science with Islamic values, but also encouraged the revival of intellectual consciousness and the formation of a dynamic Islamic worldview (weltanschauung). In conclusion, Muhammad Abduh's scientific thought became an important foundation for the renewal of modern Islam. His ideas not only strengthened the rational approach to understanding religious texts, but also provided a new direction for the development of Islamic civilization that was able to dialogue with the progress of science and technology without losing the essence of its spirituality.

Abstrak Makalah ini bertujuan mengkaji pengaruh Abu’l-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd (1126-1198) dalam mencetuskan kebangkitan dan pencerahan akliah di Eropah. Pengaruh dari falsafahnya yang ditulis dalam rangka kurun ke-6–12 Hijrah menzahirkan pengaruh dan kesan yang dramatik dalam pembikinan tamadun Eropah di kemuncak peradabannya pada kurun ke 18 M. Kesan sejarah yang fenomenal ini tertegak dan dizahirkan dalam pandangan dan kebudayaan yang berkembang di dunia Barat. Kajian ini dirangka berasaskan pendekatan kualitatif dari jenis tinjauan dokumenter dan analisis kandungan. Data diperoleh dari sumber-sumber primer (khasnya buku Fasl al-Maqal oleh Ibn Rushd) dan sekunder (tulisan-tulisan yang dihasilkan tentang Ibn Rushd dan karyanya) dan diolah secara deskriptif dan analitis, dengan teknik taakulan yang bersifat tematis, hermeneutis, sintesis, dan historis. Dapatan kajian mendapati bahawa pemikiran dan idealisme yang dicetuskan oleh karya-karya besar Ibn Rushd terutamanya Fasl al-maqal, telah menghasilkan perubahan radikal dalam masyarakat Eropah. Pemikiran yang dirumuskannya telah mengangkat tamadun baru dan menzahirkan kekuatan yang meyakinkan dalam sejarah dan kebudayaan Andalusia. Makalah ini melukiskan pengaruh yang monumental dari tulisannya yang penting ini dalam tradisi sejarah dan keilmuan Islam di Eropah. Ia berkesimpulan bahawa karya utama Ibn Rushd yakni Fasl al-Maqal telah mendorong kepada penemuan idea-idea pencerahan di Eropah dan menciptakan gerakan rasionalisme di Barat. The article reflects on the Attasian perspective and epistemology of the West, by highlighting the critique of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas of Western secularism and the production of its modern secular outlook that projected Hellenistic influence on its intellectual and historical tradition, arising from its physical and materialistic concern which contradict with Islamic teaching of ethics and morality and its metaphysical worldview. Its objective is to survey its doctrinal impact on Muslim spiritual life which has caused confusion and error in their vision of reality and truth. The study is based on descriptive-qualitative approaches in the form of literature and documentary survey. The data were analyzed using inductive and deductive method by way of analytic, historical, empirical, hermeneutical, and philological technique. The finding reveals that al-Attas’s critique of the West was designed to dismantle its dewesternization and desecularization framework and the corruption of knowledge and its ideological impact on Muslim society. Its discursive ground was argued in his work on Islamic Metaphysics that defined “Islamic psychology, Islamic cosmology and Islamic ontology” articulating its nature and difference from Western philosophy influenced by its European-Christian thought embedded in its religious experience that make up its substance, premises and values. The research contributes to highlight al-Attas’s philosophical argument and his critique of the West and its contemporary relevance in Muslim society.
