Abstract

Abstract

This paper examines the underlying ideas and scope of maqasid al-syariah (higher objective of Islamic law) propagated by Muhammad al-Tahir ibn ‘Ashur (1879-1973) in his seminal work, Tafsir al-Tahrir wa’l-Tanwir. It looks into the connection between his interpretation and the instrumentality of the verses and its scriptural paradigm designed to bring forth the ideas and doctrines of maqasid and maslahah (common good) in his tafsir. The study is technically based on qualitative method in the form of analytical and logical reasoning. The finding concludes that the Tafsir al-Tahrir wa’l-Tanwir was structurally constructed based on the principle of maqasid al-shariah that ideally expounded its rational and philosophical basis. Its legal formulation was based on the Islamic reference of the Qur’an, hadith, maqasid al-Qur’an (higher objective of the Quran), reason and  analogical reasoning and premises. Ibn Ashur’s work had broadly influence the intellectual progress and development of ijtihad oriented toward maqasid as well as dynamic understanding and consciousness of the spirit of law (syariah) in the modern context.

Abstract

The paper investigates the principle of tafsir espoused by Abul A‘la al-Mawdudi (1903-1979) in his seminal work, Tafhim al-Quran (Towards Understanding the Qur’an). The work shows a balanced approaches between tafsir bil ma’thur (narrative commentary) and tafsir bil ra’y (independent judgement) developed in his interpretation. The study is of descriptive-qualitative type in the form of literature review and content analysis. It critically examines the text of Tafhim al-Quran (Towards Understanding the Qur’an), its content, themes, relational ideas, style and doctrine. The finding shows that al-Maududi had succinctly applied concise ways in explaining the verse that largely derived from classical authoritative sources. It reflected a balance approach of traditional and modern ideal brought forth in his tafsir that illustrates its puritanical and argumentative nature underlying his interpretation that brings original and in-depth discussion of the text.

Abstract

This study investigates Hamka’s reformist epistemology by examining the modernist genealogies and hermeneutical strategies that shaped his intellectual project in the Malay Indonesian world. While previous scholarship has highlighted Hamka as a literary figure, nationalist thinker, or religious leader, limited attention has been given to the systematic ways in which he internalized, adapted, and transformed the rational modernism of Muhammad Abduh into a distinct framework of Islamic renewal. Addressing this gap, the study aims to identify the intellectual transmission of Abduh’s ideas into Hamka’s corpus, analyze the interpretive principles embedded in Tafsir al Azhar and related writings, and explain how these principles contributed to the emergence of a localized yet cosmopolitan modernist discourse. Methodologically, the research employs qualitative textual analysis, intellectual genealogy, and historical contextualization using primary sources from Hamka’s tafsir, essays, speeches, and archival materials, complemented by secondary analyses of Southeast Asian reform movements. The findings reveal that Hamka developed a reformist epistemology grounded in rational inquiry, ethical intentionality, and the rejection of uncritical conformity, while simultaneously constructing a vernacularized model of Islamic modernity attuned to Malay Indonesian socio cultural realities. This synthesis produced a transformative religious discourse that reshaped educational, doctrinal, and public life across the region. The study contributes theoretically by repositioning Hamka within the global trajectory of Islamic modernism and demonstrating how peripheral intellectual spaces generate original models of reform. Its implications extend to contemporary debates on Islamic hermeneutics, religious authority, and the ongoing negotiation of modernity in Muslim Southeast Asia.
