<![CDATA[This paper discusses the fundamental ideal and philosophy of education advocated by Ismail Raji al-Faruqi (1921-1986) in realizing the Islamization of knowledge (IOK) project. The concept and perspective of education projected by al-Faruqi was constructed on the worldview of tawhid that reflected the essence and intrinsic philosophy and paradigm of knowledge rooted on Islamic vision of reality and truth. It embodied the comprehensive and holistic vision of education that seeks to integrate the fundamental element of revealed and acquired knowledge. The project envisaged to undertake significant reform in the practice and method of education of the ummah that need to be recast and reproject based on the intrinsic value and paradigm of the Qur’an and its approach to knowledge. This paper will analyse this significant idea and principle and its importance in realizing the IOK vision and reforming the educational system in the Muslim world. ]]>

<![CDATA[Muhammad Abduh had a remarkably profound and lasting impact in Indonesia. His reformist ideas had a strong repercussion in the political and social landscape of the region. They were readily adopted by major Islamic movements, notably Muhammadiyah, al-Irshad and Persatuan Islam (Persis). Abduh’s Tafsir al-Manar deeply influenced some momentous works of Qur’anic exegesis, such as Tafsir al-Azhar, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Madjid (Tafsir al-Nur), Tafsir al-Misbah and Tafsir al-Furqan. His Majallat al-Manar, which was planned and collaborated with Rashid Rida since 1898, highly inspired reform-oriented scholarship evident in journals such as al-Munir, and al-Dhakhirah al-Islamiyah. This study aims to analyze the influence of Abduh’s modernism in Indonesia. It attempts to discover the implication of his principle and philosophical tradition in the religious reform and modern movement in Indonesia. The method of study is based on qualitative approaches, using content analysis method. It was conducted based on library method to investigate the related data from primary and secondary sources. The data was analyzed using descriptive-analytical approaches, by way of inference (istisqa’) and deductive (istinbat) method. The paper concluded that Abduh had profound and extensive influence in the Archipelago, especially his impact on Islamic reform and renewal (islah and tajdid) in Indonesia.]]>

<![CDATA[This article reviews the role and leadership of Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) in his career as editorial head of the newspaper al-Waqā'i' al-Misrīyyah (الوقائع المصرية) since 1880. His actions in the realm of journalism are important in the context of the rise of the Egyptian newspaper, especially al -Mu'ayyad and al-Waqā'i' al-Misrīyyah as official government newspapers to develop modernist ideals and influence public opinion in Egypt. It made an important impact which enabled it to play a role in developing the dignity of the language, increasing the influence of the press and journalism and raising public awareness of the intense political and cultural interactions in the development of the spirit of nationalism and social consciousness in Egypt. His political writings and plans cover the periods of Riyad Pasha's administration, Sharif's administration and times of upheaval. This article highlights the ideas he expressed regarding social and spiritual renewal, as well as related educational, religious and socio-cultural issues. The study method is based on documentation and bookkeeping methods. The study data was reviewed descriptively, analytically and comparatively. The conclusion of the study finds dynamic and productive developments during Abduh's leadership leading to the al-Waqa'i' al-Misriyyah newspaper which succeeded in raising society's problems and drawing awareness about the latest developments in the world of politics and newspapers as well as maintaining the ethical interests and values of journalism.]]>

Sepak terjangnya dalam ranah kewartawanan ini penting dalam konteks kebangkitan akhbar Mesir khususnya al-Mu’ayyad dan al-Waqā’i‘ al-Misrīyyah sebagai surat khabar rasmi pemerintah bagi mengembangkan cita pemodenan dan mempengaruhi pandangan umum di Mesir. Ia memberi kesan yang penting yang memungkinkannya memainkan peranan dalam mengembangkan harkat bahasa, meningkatkan kekuatan pengaruh akhbar dan kewartawanan dan menggerakkan kesedaran umum tentang percaturan politik dan budaya yang intens dalam perkembangan semangat nasionalisme dan kesedaran sosial di Mesir. Penulisan dan rencana politiknya merangkumi tempoh pentadbiran Riyad Pasha, pentadbiran Sharif dan zaman pergolakan. Artikel ini menyorot ide-ide yang dilontarkannya tentang pembaharuan sosial dan spiritual, serta persoalan-persoalan pendidikan, agama dan sosio-budaya yang bersangkutan. Metode kajian adalah berasaskan kaedah dokumentasi dan pembukuan. Data-data kajian ditinjau secara deskriptif, analitik dan komparatif. Kesimpulan kajian mendapati perkembangan yang dinamik dan produktif di masa kepimpinan Abduh menerajui akhbar al-Waqa’i‘ al-Misriyyah yang berhasil mengangkat persoalan masyarakat dan menarik kesedaran tentang ihwal mutakhir dalam dunia politik dan akhbar serta mempertahankan kepentingan etika dan nilai kewartawanan.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper discusses Said Nursi’s Qur’anic interpretation, Risalah al-Nur and its historical background and foundational role in Islamic intellectual history and its religious tradition under the repressive secular modern Turkish Republic administration. It looks into the cultural impact of its moral-spiritual teaching and its historical significance in developing and fulfilling the fundamental role of Qur’anic revelation in delivering and justifying the principal of ethics and morality, and its cosmological values in guiding the formation of higher ethical-legal and civilizational framework. The study is based on library research using historical and qualitative approaches and documentation technique. The finding shows that the Risalah al-Nur has set forth through empirical and scientific method, the conclusive truth of the Qur’an and hadith paradigm, by way of similitude and comparison, which provide basic proof of the postulates of its inimitability and miraculousness, that was vital in strengthening the belief of tawhid and in reinforcing the religious and spiritual consciousness of the people. In the context of its interpretation and historical significance, the discourse presented in the Risalah al-Nur emphatically upheld the teaching of the Qur’an and hadith and contextualize its transcendental ideals, philosophy and values to modern life.]]>

<![CDATA[This article examines the context and method of tafsir by A. Hasan Bandung (1887-1958) based on socio-cultural approaches and the essence of his juristic and hermeneutical views and epistemological postulate, which raises important aspects of socio-legal and ethical reform as its leading voice and proponent. This is highlighted from his interpretative work of Qur’anic exegesis such as Tafsir al-Furqan, Tafsir al-Hidayah, Tafsir Surah Yasin, al-Djawahir, as well as from his column in local magazine and journal such as Himayat al-Islam, Pembela Islam and etcetera. The research is qualitative in nature, of the type of literature/library research, and hermeneutical survey. The finding shows that A. Hasan has outlined an unprecedented method of contextual interpretation of the Qur’an that reflected his rational understanding of the text. This is manifested from his arguments that celebrated the views of classical and contemporary jurist on broad aspects of Islamic law, jurisprudence, speculative theology, philosophy, religious faith, spirituality and Shariah. His interpretation was intrinsically presented in the context of structural kalam in the form of question and answer that addresses and debates diverse communal issues. It reveals the strength of his views based on ijtihad (independent reasoning) that formulate the entire juristic opinion from broadly authoritative and argumentative construct of maslahah (the common good) dan maqasid syariah (the higher objective of Islamic law).]]>

<![CDATA[Kertas ini membincangkan pengalaman agama yang berkembang dalam tradisi dan kepercayaan samawi. Hal ini disorot dari segi sejarah pertembungannya yang klasik dalam kepercayaan Semitik yang menjelmakan pemikiran tentang manhaj dan tradisi asalnya yang intens yang membentuk ajaran-ajaran keagamaan, falsafah dan prinsip metafiziknya. Ia melihat perkembangannya yang mendasar yang berakar dari warisan Ibrahim dan signifikasinya dalam mengilhamkan dialog peradaban dan konvivensia global yang inklusif dan pluralistik. Idea-idea ini digarap dari pemikiran dan karya-karya klasik dalam korpus perbandingan atau religionswissenschaft yang mempelopori faham yang ideal tentang pengalaman keagamaannya. Kajian ini bercorak kualitatif dalam bentuk analisis kandungan dan tinjauan literatur. Bahan diperoleh dari sumber primer dan sekunder terkait yang dianalisis secara deskriptif, analitis dan perbandingan. Kajian menyimpulkan bahawa esensi dan pengalaman agama ini berkembang dalam tradisi Ibrahim yang berkisar tentang prinsip dan pengalaman-pengalaman metafizik yang transendental. Tema-tema asas ini membentuk nilai dan prinsip yang cuba dikembangkan dalam kajian-kajian klasik yang meluas yang turut mempengaruhi perkembangan semasanya yang instrumental dalam mengikat persefahaman dan memperluas kaki langit tentang pandangan agama yang berbeza dan universal khasnya di Nusantara.]]>

<![CDATA[The paper aims to identify the essential methodology adopted by Sayyid Qutb in his classical work, tafsir Fi Zilal al-Qur’an and its instrumental role in projecting the strategic approaches of modern dakwah communication and outlook. His exegetical work laid out highly profound interpretation and scriptural analysis of the Qur’an and its universal values and political ideas based on cultural-linguistics and dynamic framework. The work set forth to expound socio-ethical principle of the Qur’an and its ideological postulate and implication in contemporary perspective. The study is based on qualitative approaches in the form of library and documentary survey. The data were obtained from related primary and secondary sources and analysed using descriptive, historical and analytical approaches. The finding shows that Sayyid Qutb had formulated an inclusive method of philosophical interpretation of the Qur’an that outlined his dynamic framework (haraki) of religious and ethico-legal views as its core ideological roots and basis. The pattern of thought and interpretation were influenced by this method in the development of his tafsir that underlie his socio-political outlook which is relevant in the development of modern narrative of dakwah and inter-faith dialogue. This categorically form the basis of his philosophy and idealism underlying his method that highlighted the essence of Islamic views and its contemporary relevance in modern context that bring forth the cultural dynamic of religious premises and the perenial values of tauhid.]]>
