Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the discovery learning model in improving mathematical problem solving abilities and habit of minds of class VII middle school students. The research method used in this study is quasi experiment. This research was carried out in one of the private junior high school in the city of Cimahi by selecting two classses, namely VII A dan VII B. Each clas has 30 students. The instruments used were 5 questions on problem solving ability and habit of mind. Data in the form of test result and questionnaries were processed using the N-gain test and the difference test between two averages with the help of the SPSS. The result showed that the class whose learning used the discovey learning model had mathematical problem solving ablities and students’ habit of minds better than the class which used ordinary learning.

Abstract

Critical thinking ability is an essential component of the four skills needed in the 21st century. However, this ability is still challenging to achieve well by students because of the lack of communication and cooperation during learning mathematics. Therefore, this experimental study with a posttest-only control design was conducted to determine the effect of using the jigsaw cooperative learning model on students' mathematical critical thinking skills. This study involved 62 students consisting of 31 students for the experimental class and 31 students for the control class. Data were analyzed using parametric statistics, namely t-test. The calculation of effect sizes is carried out to determine how much influence the Jigsaw cooperative model has on critical thinking skills using the Hedges'g equation. The analysis results concluded that the critical thinking skills of students who were taught using the jigsaw cooperative learning model were better than those taught using the direct learning model, at a significance level of 0.05. Further analysis obtained an effect size of 0.64, indicating that jigsaw cooperative learning has a moderate effect on students' critical thinking skills. These results provide helpful information for educators and researchers to consider mediators that might mediate the implementation of the learning method in the future.

Abstract

This research aims to determine and analyze students' mathematical reasoning abilities in terms of students' learning motivation (high, medium and low). The research method used is descriptive qualitative, namely a research method that will describe a phenomenon. The subjects in this research were 34 class VIII students at a school in Cimahi City. The instruments used were a mathematical reasoning ability test, a learning motivation questionnaire, and an interview guide. Data from the research results were processed based on student learning motivation in the high, medium and low categories for each indicator of mathematical reasoning ability. Based on the research results, it shows that the average value of mathematical reasoning ability of students with high learning motivation is 64.4%, the average value of mathematical reasoning ability of students with moderate learning motivation is 62%, and the average value of mathematical reasoning ability with motivation low learning by 50%. In general, among students' difficulties in working on mathematical reasoning ability questions are errors in mathematical calculations, this shows that students do not understand the concept and only use their memory to solve the problem.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are essential for addressing 21st-century challenges, which requires a learning model that can optimally engage students' cognitive abilities. This study aims to examine the improvement of students' critical mathematical thinking skills (KBKM) through learning that utilizes the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Discovery Learning models, based on the students' skill levels. The method used in this study is a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design. In the quantitative phase, quasi-experimental research was conducted with a one-group pretest-posttest design, ANOVA, and a 3x2 factorial design. In the qualitative phase, an embedded concurrent strategy was applied. The sample consisted of 72 grade VII students from State Junior High Schools in Cimahi City. The results revealed that the criteria had a significant effect on the critical mathematical thinking skills scores. The learning model also had a direct impact on improving these skills. Additionally, the study found that the average score of the high group was higher than that of the medium and low groups. In terms of learning models, Discovery Learning proved to be more effective in the learning process.

Abstract

Cabri is characterized by an attractive advantage and provides wide-ranging benefits in the teaching of mathematics. Although today there have been many studies on the edges of Cabri, experiments on Cabri-Express have not been widely explored. For this reason, a quasi-experimental study with a randomized posttest only design involving 80 grade VII junior high school students in Ruteng, Indonesia, was conducted to analyze the effect of Cabri-Express in learning geometry on students' overall mathematical communication ability (MCA) and based on students' initial mathematical abilities. The results of the MCA test are the research data, which consists of 5 questions that are then analyzed by t-test and preceded by conducting an analysis prerequisite test. The Hedges equation describes how much influence the Cabri-Express model has on students' MCA. The results showed that the overall MCA of students who were taught using the help of an Cabri-Express was better than students who were taught using the conventional model. From the Hedges equation, an effect size of 1.23 is obtained, indicating that the use of Cabri-Expresses strongly affects students' MCA. These results interpret that students who are ranked 13th in the experimental class are equivalent to those who are ranked 5th in the control class. By clarifying the effect of Cabri-Express on students' MCA, this study recommends the need to use Cabri-Express in mathematics classes. The analysis results can also help researchers explore other material in a relatable context.

Abstract

Evidence-based research on the effect of Realistic Mathematical Education (RME) has been conducted. However, whether differences in the measured variables alter the studies' effect sizes have not been explored. To fill this gap, it is necessary to conduct a meta-analysis study that can summarize the evidence for the effect of RME and analyze how the differences in the measured variables are associated with the effect size (ES) of the study. The research sample is an individual study of the effect of RME on various mathematical abilities identified from the ERIC database, the Scopus database, and Google Scholar. Based on the inclusion requirements, 54 independent samples from 38 individual studies were included in the analysis with a total of 6140 students included. The estimation method uses a random-effect model, and the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software is used as a data processing tool. The results of the analysis showed that the ES of the study was 0.97. This shows that overall, the use of RME has a significant effect on students' mathematical abilities. The moderator analysis results explain that the differences in the measured variables moderate the implementation of RME. These findings contribute to the implementation of RME in classrooms and the further development of RME by considering the categories of abilities being measured.
