Abstract

Methanyl yellow is a synthetic dye used in the textile industry and its use is prohibited in food products. Its abuse is still found in crackers, noodles, tofu, and beverages. Methanyl yellow identification test used color reaction test, thin layer chromatography, paper chromatography, TLC scanner, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. So, in this study, the methanyl yellow test strip test method was developed using anthocyanin immobilized nata de coco membrane with rosella flower extract. The purpose of this study was to determine the selectivity and sensitivity of the resulting test strips. The test strip consisted of nata de coco membrane and rosella flower extract reagent. The test strip made has an optimum contact time of 10 seconds. In the analysis using FTIR, the functional groups O–H, C–H alkanes, C=O, C=C alkenes, C–O, and C–H alkenes on the test strip indicated anthocyanin compounds. In the test strip which was reacted with methanyl yellow the functional group identified had a weaker absorption than the test strip which had not been reacted. The characterization test includes a detection limit test with detection capability starting at a concentration of 6 ppm and lifetime test results, up to the 21st day the strip test can be used, storage using dark bottles is better than clear bottles. So that the resulting test strips provide good data and can be used for quick measurements.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Blended Problem-Based Learning (Blended-PBL) approach in enhancing speaking performance among EFL students with different self-efficacy levels and explores students’ perceptions of its application in speaking instruction. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved 32 undergraduate students of an English Education Study Program, consisting of 16 students with high self-efficacy and 16 with low self-efficacy, who participated in a speaking course during the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through pre- and post-test speaking performance assessments evaluated with an analytic rubric, a self-efficacy questionnaire, and a perception survey, and analyzed using paired sample t-tests and descriptive statistics. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ speaking performance after the Blended-PBL intervention, with a paired sample t-test yielding a value of t = -12.162 (p 0.05), confirming that the gains were statistically significant. Interestingly, although students with high self-efficacy performed slightly better than their peers with lower self-efficacy, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant, suggesting that Blended-PBL is equally beneficial across varying levels of self-efficacy. Furthermore, perception data demonstrated that students held favorable views toward Blended-PBL, particularly in terms of motivation, collaboration, confidence building, and problem-solving skills. These findings highlight Blended-PBL as an effective and inclusive pedagogical model for EFL speaking instruction, with potential to foster learners engagement, reduce performance gaps, and promote a more supportive and equitable language learning environment. Keywords: Blended problem-based learning, self-efficacy levels, speaking performance

Abstract

Analysis of the ability to solve problems using Polya's steps on linear programming material in terms of learning styles is a description of students' ability to solve problems using Polya's steps on linear programming materials which are reviewed based on students' learning styles. The learning styles used according to DePorter and Hernacki are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the aim of knowing and describing students' ability to solve problems using Polya's steps in terms of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. The subjects of this study were students of class XI MAS-PPM Nurul Falah Palu who were selected by one representative student each from the results of a learning style questionnaire that grouped students with visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles. . The results of data analysis show that, (1) In understanding the problem, students with visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles show relevant understanding by gathering information contained in the questions and can identify problems from the questions with their knowledge of the "statement" and "question" sentences, although with a different writing style. The difference is seen in students with kinesthetic learning styles.. (2) In planning problem solving, subjects with visual and auditory learning styles can plan strategically well to achieve the goals to be achieved in a problem and can choose relevant information from the problem. While subjects with kinesthetic learning styles are quite good in planning problem solving but in developing strategies they are still not suitable to be able to solve problems properly. (3) In carrying out problem solving plans, subjects with visual learning styles are very good at executing, carrying out plans and are able to organize and integrate problems with relevant previous knowledge, as well as auditory subjects even with different writing styles. Meanwhile, subjects with kinesthetic learning styles cannot solve them properly because they are unable to integrate problems with previous knowledge. (4) In re-examining, subjects with visual and auditory learning styles carry out re-examinations because they can monitor, check or detect end results and unexpected events. Meanwhile, subjects with kinesthetic learning styles did not re-examine such as visual and auditory subjects because they were not sure about the problem solving they were doing.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out students’ perception toward the use of podcast video in speaking class. This research was a case study. The participants were the second semester students of Speaking for Social Intercultural Class of English Department Study Program at Universitas Baturaja in the academic year of 2024/2025 with the total number of participants are 24 students. The data were collected through close-ended questionnaire and analyzed by percentage analysis and presenting data using tables. The result of the study showed that (1) Students had a good attitude toward the usage of podcast video in speaking class because podcast video is simple to utilize. Podcast video may help them learn to talk, and they are willing to use podcast video as an alternate method of learning to speak. Podcasts video can also motivate them since they attracted their interest. The podcast video's content and pronunciation of the native speaker could help them improve their talents. Furthermore, podcast video was easy to access; (2) The perception problems expressed by students regarding the use of podcast video in speaking class revealed that the length of the podcast is too long for them. Thus, they may get bored and lose their interest when watching a podcast video
