Abstract

Implementing responsive feeding is essential for modifying the nutritional status and overall well-being of young children. The aim of this narrative review is to provide a thorough synthesis of the current evidence on responsive feeding and its impact on the nutritional status of young children. Searches were conducted in PubMed and Medline with keywords "Responsive feeding," AND “young children”. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined to choose the most pertinent studies. The initial search yielded 106 articles, with a total of 22 full-text articles examined, 12 of which were appropriate for inclusion. The review emphasizes the function of responsive feeding in maintaining healthy eating habits, reducing childhood obesity, and promoting optimal growth and development in young children. The study highlights the significance of early nutrition treatments that prioritize responsive feeding to enhance nutritional quality and foster healthy eating habits during early childhood. It also discusses the difficulties that caregivers experience when implementing responsive feeding methods, such as competing societal norms and external influences. Furthermore, the review identifies data gaps and recommends additional studies to investigate the long-term impacts of responsive feeding on children's nutrition, and health outcomes. In conclusion, the narrative review underlines the significance of responsive feeding in supporting optimal nutrition and healthy eating habits in young children.

Abstract

Background: Irresponsible feeding behavior is the cause of being overweight in early childhood. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the dietary habits of preschool-aged children residing in a suburban region of Indonesia characterized by a significant prevalence of obesity among children aged five and below. Methods: This study was a case study design conducted in South Tangerang, Banten Province, Indonesia, involving six moms who had toddlers with overweight to obese nutritional status. The number of six participants was decided after the saturation coding of the fifth participant, and then one more participant was interviewed to ensure that the data was genuinely saturated. The mothers were selected to participate in the study and were interviewed in depth. The researcher also observed the participants' eating behavior. The analytical framework was used in this research, and then the interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The four themes found were 1) The inability to respond to internal cues of satiety, 2) Distraction at mealtimes, 3) Unhealthy food in emotional eating, and 4) Mothers practice persuasive feeding. Conclusions: The children show unresponsive feeding behavior, which notably contributes to the prevalence of overnutrition during early childhood. Community health professionals should strengthen their efforts to improve feeding behaviors among mothers to address the nutritional status of preschool-aged children.

Abstract

Background: The Emergency Unit is the starting point for emergency patients who need first aid. Entering the emergency room can cause anxiety in patients. The anxiety felt by patients can worsen the patient's condition while the patient is receiving treatment. Aims: To identify the relationship between nurses' therapeutic communication and patient anxiety levels in the emergency room. Method: Quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach, as many as 40 respondents through purposive sampling, anxiety level questionnaire using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 (DASS-21). Data analysis using Spearman Rank correlation. Result: The majority of respondents had mild anxiety as many as 13 people (32.5%). There is a significant relationship between nurses' therapeutic communication and patient anxiety levels (p value <0.005), with a correlation coefficient of -0.975. This value shows a very strong and negative relationship between therapeutic communication and anxiety levels. the better the therapeutic communication provided by nurses, the lower the patient's anxiety level tends to be. Discussion: Therapeutic communication by nurses plays an important role in reducing patient anxiety. Empathetic, clear, and supportive communication can help patients feel calmer and safer in emergency situations. Therapeutic communication training for nurses in the ER needs to be improved as part of efforts to improve the quality of care and patient comfort.
