Abstract

The low quality of groundwater, along with the increasing demand for drinking water for the community, encourages the need for water treatment technology to produce quality drinking water that is environmentally friendly. One promising method to be applied is membrane technology. In water treatment systems, membrane technology is often not used alone but combined with other methods to improve water quality more effectively. This study aims to apply several methods for the raw water treatment system to drinking water, including membrane filtration and UV irradiation. The removal of chemical pollutants was investigated and compared to the standard value from Minister of Health Regulation No. 492 Year 2010 for drinking water quality. This coupled treatment successfully improved the water quality. The concentration of chemical and biological pollutants such as total dissolved solids (TDS), Fe, Zn, Pb, and total Coliform were reduced by 58.53%; 43.48%; 88.89%; 66.67%.; and 86.15%, respectively. The results indicate that coupling microfiltration membrane to UV irradiation method can be an effective treatment to remove chemical pollutants and enhance the quality of raw water for drinking water preparation.

Abstract

Agroindustry residues can be utilized as a resource for alternative energy sources such as bio-briquettes. Using agro-industry residue is also a solution to reduce pollution caused by biomass waste in the environment. This article highlights the combustion quality analysis of biomass waste in the form of bio-briquettes with binding materials prepared from tapioca flour. The biomass used is a mixture of coconut shell charcoal and coal to improve the quality of the bio-briquettes. In this study, bio-briquettes were manufactured using a screw press system. The combustion quality of bio-briquettes with various percentage compositions (0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0) of coconut shell charcoal and coal was investigated, i.e., moisture content, ash content, combustion rate, and calorific value. Results show that the calorific value of most bio-briquettes produced in this study was higher than the standard calorific value according to  SNI Standard No.1/6235/2000 (≥ 5,000 cal/gr). The optimum composition to produce bio-briquette with good quality based on the standard is 75:25 (coconut shell charcoal: coal), which had a moisture content of 7.6325%, ash content of 6.9697%, combustion rate of 0.1833 gr/min, and caloric value of 5833.78 cal/gr.

Abstract

Membrane technology is a technique in water and wastewater treatment that has many advantages. This study focuses on the manufacture and characterization of cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) membranes using the phase inversion method. The CAP is preferable since it is a biopolymer that is environmentally friendly and cheap. The production of CAP membrane was carried out using phase inversion method, and varied in 3 different concentrations of CAP i.e., 13, 14, and 15% wt., with additional material of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis to determine its morphology, pores, and functional groups. The results show that the membrane containing 13% wt. CAP exhibits higher porosity with more macropores than a membrane with 14 and 15% wt. CAP. However, membranes with higher concentrations of CAP show more uniform pores and fewer macropores. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups in the membrane such as C-O, -CH3, C=O, C-H, and –OH. It is also found that there is a shift in Wavenumber due to the increase in the concentration of CAP in each membrane.

Abstract

Abstract. Bagasse is a waste that can still be utilized, one of which is processed into biochar. In this study, bagasse waste came from a sugar factory in Majalengka, Cirebon, West Java. The bagasse pyrolysis process was carried out at PT XXX biochar factory located in the area. Industrial scale biochar production is done by Rotary Carbonization Furnace. The research objective was to characterize biochar with variable residence time and pyrolysis temperature. Biochar was characterized based on physicochemical properties and surface composition analysis for use as a soil improver and adsorbent. The test results show that residence time and pyrolysis temperature affect biochar products. Physical characterization showed that the pyrolysis residence time of 24.73 minutes with a temperature of 400 oC gave biochar results with pH (8.92), c-organic (24.15%), total N (0.2%), P2O5 (0.17%) and high C/N ratio (1,208.00). This biochar has good quality for application as a soil improver, especially in increasing carbon storage capacity and improving soil pH. The high C/N ratio and low nitrogen content require alloying with other sources to increase nitrogen and phosphorus and lower the C/N ratio. Chemical characterization by BET test showed that pyrolysis residence time of 24.73 min at 400 oC gave the best results in terms of increasing surface area (0.554 m²/g) and pore volume (0.00364 cc/g), making it the optimal temperature to produce biochar with high adsorption capacity. Surface characterization by SEM-EDX mapping analysis showed that the pyrolysis residence time of 24.73 min at 400 oC gave results with relatively high composition of carbon (82.17%), oxygen (14.89%), silica (1.97%), potassium (0.42%), and made it more effective for soil conditioner applications. Keywords: Bagasse, Biochar, Pyrolysis.
