Abstract

Bromo is one of Indonesia’s premier tourist destinations, renowned for its unique biodiversity, including Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanica), a symbolic flower of mountainous ecosystems. However, increasing tourism activities and human interference have threatened the conservation of Edelweiss habitats. To address this challenge, faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Jawa Timur, in collaboration with the local community of Bromo and international universities, conducted an Edelweiss planting program on September 26, 2024. This initiative was part of the Adjunct Professor program and the International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST) 2024. The program achieved a seedling adaptation success rate of 85%, contributing to improved soil stability in the planting areas. Beyond ecological impacts, the initiative successfully raised environmental awareness and fostered active local community participation in conservation. The collaboration among academics, the local community, and international partners highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder approaches in environmental preservation. Despite challenges such as unpredictable weather and the need for long-term monitoring, the program serves as a model for community-based conservation initiatives in other sensitive ecosystems.

Abstract

Slaughterhouse wastewater contains high levels of organic matter and nitrogen, which can potentially pollute the environment if not properly treated. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) system with intermittent aeration using pumice stone media in reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and ammonia (NH₃-N) concentrations. The tested variables included media filling ratios (25%, 35%, and 45%) and hydraulic retention times (4, 6, and 8 hours) with balanced oxic–anoxic cycles. The results showed that increasing the media ratio and retention time significantly improved pollutant removal efficiency. The best performance was achieved with 45% media and an 8-hour retention time, resulting in COD and NH₃-N removal efficiencies of 87% and 82.8%, respectively. The pumice stone media effectively supported biofilm growth, which played a key role in the nitrification–denitrification processes. The intermittent MBBR technology with pumice media proved to be efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater.

Abstract

Air sumur merupakan salah satu sumber air tanah yang banyak dimanfaatkan, namun umumnya mengandung mineral terlarut dalam konsentrasi tinggi seperti besi (Fe) yang dapat menurunkan kualitas air. Penelitian ini mengkaji upaya peningkatan kualitas air sumur melalui kombinasi proses aerasi dan adsorpsi. Aerasi dilakukan menggunakan  diffuser berukuran 8 inch dan 10 inch, sedangkan proses adsorpsi menggunakan sistem kolom kontinyu dengan adsorben Ampas tebu, kulit pisang, dan campuran keduanya.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis efektivitas variasi aerasi terhadap penurunan kadar Fe. Menganalisis kinerja variasi adsorben pada kolom kontinyu, serta menganalisis efektivitas kombinasi kedua proses tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aerasi sangat efektif dalam menurunkan Fe dengan persen removal 91,4 - 94,1%,. Pada proses adsorpsi, kolom campuran menunjukkan kinerja terbaik dengan persen removal Fe sebesar 86,7 - 87,1%. Secara keseluruhan, kombinasi aerasi  diffuser diikuti dengan Adsorpsi Kolom Campuran merupakan kombinasi 2 proses yang saling terhubung. Hal ini akan menghasilkan efisiensi penyisihan total yang sangat tinggi,serta lebih mempermudah dalam proses adsorpsi dan menghemat penggunaan media adsorben dikarenakan sebelum masuk kedalam proses adsropsi dilakukan proses aerasi terlebih dahulu.

Abstract

PT X is a company that runs in the business of industry and trade in pharmaceutical products, as well as laboratory testing services in the animal feed sector. In the future, PT X plans to open laboratory testing services in the animal feed sector, so the condition of PT X's B3 Waste Temporary Storage Site (TPS) needs to be redesigned to comply with applicable regulations. Therefore, it is necessary to redesign the company's B3 Waste TPS building to comply with PP No. 22 of 2021 and PermenLHK No. 6 of 2021. This journal is aimed at redesigning PT X’s B3 waste temporary storage site so that it meets the established regulations and improves B3 waste storage activities at PT X. This research journal begins with collecting data, type, and characteristics of hazardous waste. Based on data on the amount of B3 Waste output, the storage capacity of the B3 Waste TPS at PT X can be said to still not be in accordance with applicable regulations. The results of the journal, PT X’s TPS able to store the planned waste and in accordance with established regulations.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Primary clarifier merupakan salah satu unit penting dalam sistem Instalasi Pengolahan Air Limbah (IPAL) yang berfungsi untuk memisahkan padatan tersuspensi dari limbah cair sebelum memasuki tahap pengolahan lanjutan. Pada IPAL PT.X, yang bergerak di sektor industri kertas, ditemukan permasalahan berupa sludge yang tidak mengendap secara sempurna dan terbawa ke aliran overflow. Kondisi ini menyebabkan peningkatan beban organik dan padatan pada unit berikutnya, serta menurunkan efisiensi keseluruhan proses pengolahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kinerja primary clarifier berdasarkan parameter waktu tinggal, total suspended solids (TSS), dan kecepatan pengendapan. Metode yang digunakan meliputi pengambilan data debit limbah, uji laboratorium TSS pada inlet dan outlet clarifier, serta analisis hubungan antara kecepatan pengendapan dan efisiensi reduksi. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa efisiensi penurunan TSS masih dapat ditingkatkan dengan pengaturan debit aliran, optimasi dosis flokulan, dan perbaikan desain hidraulik. Rekomendasi perbaikan teknis diberikan untuk meningkatkan performa clarifier dan mendukung sistem pengolahan limbah yang lebih efektif dan berkelanjutan. ABSTRACT The primary clarifier plays a crucial role in wastewater treatment systems, serving to separate suspended solids from effluent prior to biological processing. At the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of PT.X, a paper manufacturing company, operational issues were identified in the form of incomplete sludge settling, resulting in sludge carry-over through the overflow outlet. This condition contributes to increased organic and solid loads on subsequent treatment units and reduces overall process efficiency. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the primary clarifier by analyzing detention time, total suspended solids (TSS), and sedimentation velocity. The methods include flow rate measurement, laboratory testing of TSS at both inlet and outlet points, and graphical analysis of the relationship between settling velocity and removal efficiency. Results indicate that TSS reduction efficiency can be improved by adjusting influent flow rates, optimizing the use of flocculants, and refining hydraulic design parameters. Technical recommendations are proposed to enhance clarifier performance and support a more effective and sustainable wastewater treatment process.
